Does anyone think he will put up some strong numbers during the 2nd half of the season? We picked him up through FAAB (overspent and could've had him for $1) but I was surprised that no one else even placed a bid for him. I know he wastes a valuable roster spot for the next 2 months but I think the bigger issue is he wasn't any good before he was placed on the DL. I just thought he was close to Scherzer in talent and upside but maybe no one else placed a bid on him because he was so bad in April.

Seriously--2nd year pitchers with good fastballs and no second pitch --take 2-3 years to transform into useful fantasy pitchers. In August--he will wish you found some 2 start pitcher with good matchups for a 1 win, 4.00 era 1.35 whip 10 K's vs 0 wins, 4.75 era, 1.75 whip and 6 k's.

Hitless:

Phil Hughes was projected by Baseball America to be the #1 player in the minor leagues last season. He showed flashes last season, before his injury.

I think the Yanks overmanaged these kids to a fault in the spring, and surely in the month of April. They thought enough of him to not trade for Johan.

We saw two weeks ago how the FAAB madness takes over some of those that play the NFBC for "the new face". Two years ago, Cole Hamels, was treated the same way and quite frankly had a rough start. I remember getting Cole very late in the Mid-season game ( post hype ) and he helped me win a free entry. I think you have taken a very good risk. Buy low, provided that the construction of your 7 reserves allow you to do so.

I landed Phil for $29, which was also more than I should have paid, but I wanted him. If he got recalled from the minors in July as a fresh face he would command mega dollars. I'll be rooting for you, as we have both taken the same shot. Good luck.

Sack well said.I remember last year the game Hughes got hurt in he had a no hitter going and was looking awesome. He needs to get back to pitching like that , im not sure he can have good fantasy value this year. But if you have room for one reserve then go for it.

I appreciate the feedback positive and negative. I remember the game where he had the no-hitter going too and it's hard to ignore what he is capable of doing. Then I remember he's only 21 (22?) and the growing pains will continue to be there. Sack- hope the risk pays off- good luck to your team too.

A good fastball and no 2nd pitch? His cyurveball is devistating when he can get it over and keep it DOWN. Couple that with a mid 90's fastball and you have an ace in the making.

Herein also lies the problem. I don't think I've seen the same velocity on his fastball since his near-no-hitter in Texas last year. The lack of velocity, and his lack of control down in the zone with his curve this April has lead to some pretty horrible '08 numbers. Can we blame it all on his injury and think the velocity AND control come back in July? As someone who drafted him and is trying to hang on to him...I sure hope so.
