Maurice Gregory Is Week 11 Winner
Big boosts from a player just off the DL and an ace starter was the winning combination last week for Maurice Gregory in the NFBC as his Slippery When Wet team in Las Vegas League 6 topped the field with 3,024.5 points.
Big weeks from Ryan Doumit (.400-4-7), Ben Francisco (.333-1-7), Jose Guillen (.467-1-6) and Aubrey Huff (.423-1-5) led the way offensively. C.C. Sabathia picked up a pair of wins and fanned 15 while Dana Eveland and A.J. Burnett combined for two wins and 15 strikeouts to lead the pitching staff.
“We finally got both the offense and the pitching going in the same week,” said Gregory, who runs the team with co-manager Grant Gautier. “Ryan Doumit coming off the DL and hitting four homers was a giant boost. Also CC Sabathia making two starts and pitching like the stud he is was also a great help. Picking up Ben Francisco and Salomon Torres in free agency have been really great for us too.”
Heading into their draft Gregory and Gautier targeted offense early, hoping to load up there and then find some value with pitchers as the draft proceeded. Snapping up Torres in FAAB has also proven to be quite beneficial.
“We bid $247 on Salmon Torres in free agency, due to Eric Gagne
being so inconsistent and David Riske being hurt,” Gregory said. “We felt like Torres was done wrong in Pittsburg, and if he had the opportunity with the Brewers, he could do the job as well as anyone. So far so good on Torres. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
Maurice is 35 and lives in Gautier, MS with his wife of six years and their two children. He is a certified real estate appraiser along the MS Gulf Coast. Grant lives in the same city and is a pharmacist who was recently married. The two are lifelong friends.
