David Geisinger Is Week 25 Winner
Due to a series of critical injuries, David Geisinger’s team in the NFBC was essentially done in August. But Geisinger refused to let his team die and because of that, he enjoyed the best week of anyone in our event in Week 25.
Adrian Gonzalez (.370-3-11), Garret Anderson (.524-1-6), Bengie Molina (.367-2-6) and Kevin Kouzmanoff (.360-1-5) led the way offensively as Geisinger’s Mr Dalrae team in Chicago League 1 finished with 3,375.5 points. Five starters picked up wins while Brad Lidge and Mariano Rivera combined for six saves to lead the pitching staff.
That balance was a product of Geisinger’s philosophy when it comes to building his fantasy baseball team.
“My draft strategy entering this year was to get a strong, well balanced offensive team early devoting seven or eight of my first 10 picks to this since my first two years (in the NFBC) my hitting had really struggled,” he said. “My strategy is always to try to build a well balanced team, not draft to try to dominate four or five categories.
“When draft day was over I was very satisfied with my team. Unfortunately, four of my first five picks (Rollins, Byrnes, Figgins and Weeks) all had long stints on the DL and my first two starting pitchers, Maine and McGowan, did not pitch well, with both of them eventually being done for the season.
“But even though I was eliminated early I thought of what still could be accomplished - 1) win the weekly prize; 2) experiment with different managing strategies and 3) be honorable to myself, the rest of my league and the overall pool by trying to finish as high in the standings as possible. With my weekly win I have accomplished all of the above.”
Geisinger lives a mile from the western border of Chicago in a town named Cicero. He’s single and is employed by a local public school system as an assistant head of maintenance. He is no stranger to fantasy baseball, having played in leagues since he was 13.
“This is my third year in the NFBC’s main event and in all of my years playing, these past three years have been the most fun I have ever had,” he said.
