NFBC Champions League Draft Results

Post by The Mighty Men » Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:31 am

Somebody needed to start the thread, so I'll do it.

Last night was the first baseball draft I ever did while in a snowstorm. It felt very strange to be doing a draft in December, but a good time was had by all. I also had no idea who the viewers were when they posted comments.

I figured in December, when the solid rookie contributors are much harder to identify, I would focus on drafting known veterans and build my team on them. That is precisely how it worked out, because I thought certain veterans fell too far in this draft while far more unknown players were taken. In a fun draft like this with low stakes, that is not a bad philosphy. Here is my team:

SS Jose Reyes NYM R1 P5

1B Prince Fielder MIL R2 P11

SP Tim Lincecum SF R3 P5

C Geovany Soto CHC R4 P11

3B Chipper Jones ATL R5 P5

OF Jermaine Dye CHW R6 P11

OF Johnny Damon NYY R7 P5

OF Brad Hawpe COL R8 P11

RP Bobby Jenks CHW R9 P5

OF Chris Young ARI R10 P11

SP Justin Verlander DET R11 P5

SP Carlos Zambrano CHC R12 P11

SP Aaron Harang CIN R13 P5

OF Hideki Matsui NYY R14 P11

SP Chien-Ming Wang NYY R15 P5

2B Aaron Hill TOR R16 P11

1B Ryan Garko CLE R17 P5

C Yadier Molina STL R18 P11

RP Brad Ziegler OAK R19 P5

2B Freddy Sanchez PIT R20 P11

RP Chris Volstad FLA R21 P5

OF Gary Sheffield DET R22 P11

RP Takashi Saito LA R23 P5

3B Bill Hall MIL R24 P11

SP Edwin Jackson DET R25 P5

SP Dana Eveland OAK R26 P11

OF Melky Cabrera NYY R27 P5

2B Luis Castillo NYM R28 P11

OF Jerry Owens CHW R29 P5

3B Joe Crede CHW R30 P11

It seems pretty well-rounded to me for a December team. I'm a bit short perhaps on saves, but many closer situations need to get worked out, and maybe a bit on speed, but I have a solid foundation of about 110 steals with Reyes, Young and Damon.

I think getting Verlander, Zambrano, Harang and Wang in rounds 11 through 15 is pretty amazing. Each has a question mark but they all are not going to stink. Also, I'm not sure of the health of Matsui, but in the 14th round I'm willing to risk this pick for upside.

Briefly, before I head to work: I did notice what you accomplished with your pitching staff in the rounds you mentioned. Some things just jump off the page. You assembled a pretty good staff in my opinion. Don't be amazed, just remember to put Asumijet on your Christmas card list, he helped

Thanks to everyone who participated in last night's NFBC Champions League Magazine draft and for the Viewers who livened things up in the Chat room. That was a lot of fun and I agree with Jack, it's a cool feeling doing a baseball draft when it's snowing outside and Christmas hasn't arrived yet. Now let's hope the snow and cold stop soon.

Here are the first eight rounds of last night's draft. Enjoy the results and provide some feedback if you can. Thanks.

NFBC Champions League Draft Results

Post by Ryan C » Wed Dec 17, 2008 5:11 am

Fun draft - great to get the juices flowing. My draft plan changed right off the bat when Dobies took my target Sizemore at 6 - then Braun/Cabrera went dropping Rollins into my lap. Thought about Hamilton and Howard - but demured. The early speed picks prompted the Ortiz choice in the 4th. Like Fireballs, the freeebie element allowed for more rookie with upside gambles at different points.

C R Hernandez 14.7

C M Olivo 30.7

1B C Davis 6.7

2B M DeRosa 11.9

SS J Rollins 1.9

3B R Zimmerman 9.9

MI J Lowrie 17.9

CI I Stewart 19.9

OF C Crawford 2.7

OF J Bay 3.9

OF R Ibanez 7.9

OF J Upton 12.7

OF J Kubel 18.7

UT D Ortiz 4.7

P D Haren 5.9

P Aj Burnett 8.7

P C Kershaw 13.9

P M Parra 16.7

P C Bucholz 21.9

P P Malholm 22.7

P M Capps 10.7

BN C Izturis 24.7

BN M Gamel 23.9

BN B Wood 29.9

BN Gio Gonzalez 26.7

One thing I liked about this team was it's positional flexibility:

C Davis (1b/3b), DeRosa (2b/3b/Of), Lowrie (SS/3B)

Wood (3B/SS) and Stewart (should gain added 2B eligibility quickly) will help at some point.

This team will need resurgent years from Crawford and Ortiz and to a lesser extent Rollins. A breakthrough by J Upton would be nice. I would also love to see M Olivo make John Buck a true backup in KC.

Pitching-wise Burnett has to stay healthy. Kershaw and Parra will need to be solid at the very least for my staff, but I love the upside here. Love Maholm on the backend. One of the Bucholz/Gio G/Haap trio needs to breakout.

I Like the cheap SB's in reserve in Lewis and Izturis. And the potential power from Gamel/Wood.

As for saves - I need Mike Gonzalez to grab the job in Atl and for Joe Maddon to realize that JP Howell is the best arm in that bullpen. I figure J Lewis is good for 5-10 saves as the Indians protect their Kerry Wood investment.

Ryan: To me, Ortiz at 4.7 is a great value. If his health looks ok in the spring, there is no way he is a 4th round pick. I was watching him continue to fall in round 4 and wondered if he would make it back to me.

I also like DeRosa in 11 as a 2B, and his position flexibility is very nice to have.

Yeah - while I hate grabbing back to back guys from the same team (From Boston no less :D ) and clogging up my utility spot, Ortiz and Dunn were the best veteran pop left IMO.

Also, I looked at the 1B market there- and 9 were gone - top of my list at that point were Votto and Davis with my target being Davis. Votto went at 4.14 and I held my breath when I passed on Davis in the 5th that he would make it through the Jurney/Zola turn back to me in the 6th. The fact that Huff and Pena went right after made me feel even better about that one.

As for your draft - I think you did real well with the pitchers mentioned in 11-15. And Matsui should be a cheap 20-90 guy at worst. I also like A Hill - a guy that i think many are forgetting about. Your choice of Volstad led me to my Bucholz pick - so I like him as well. Chipper is one of those guys you will have to hold your breath on every year - praying he doesn't spend too much time on the DL. Also, it will be interesting to see if Brad Hawpe can step up into the void created by Holliday's departure in Col.

In the Industry draft we just finished for the magazine, 7 of the first 29 picks were first basemen. Man, that well dries up in a hurry if you don't jump in early, which I unfortunately didn't from the 11th spot. Damn Geoff Stein took Howard and Tex at 12-13 turn. I took Hamilton at 11, figuring I'd get either 1B next. I hate MDC.com. :D

Is it me, or does it seem like this year more then most favors those who pick in top 7-9. The bottom 5 or 6 first round picks are really guys youd like in mid second round....Texeira, Beltran were second rounders last year and did nothing to really better their draft positions. Meanwhile the difference between the advantage gained by drafting at top of 2nd is miniscule...is there a vast difference between Longoria and Quentin? or Phillips and Roberts? Conversely look at difference between Wright and Pedroia

Greg-- Any chance there be a mock auction draft like last year?
It should be when using the first five of six picks on them. Did you feel handcuffed in the later rounds? Were there some potential OF bargains that you passed on because you were set there?

Definitely when it came to selecting my MI. I figured id roll the dice with two potential (nothing for sure)sleepers in Aybar and Burris. Also figured that my OF would hopefully make up for some of the MI short comings. Also missed out on a third closer but saves can always be addressed in season.

Here's my team from the 3-hole. I was going Wright all the way, assuming that A-Rod and Hanley would be gone. Tough call taking Wright over Pujols but I figured 3B is shallow whereas I could probably get a quality 1B later on (turned out I was more right than I knew).

Like most drafts, nothing went as expected. Johan making it back to me at 2.13 was a surprise and one I couldn't pass up. Ditto with Morneau at 3.3.

Once Peavy made it to me at 4.13 I figured I was committed to being the SP powerhouse, so I took Kazmir in the 6th.

Then the scramble began for position players...

Not too happy with my later picks. The prospect hunters had already scooped up most of the potential big names. Catchers were few and far between, as were second basemen. The Renteria pick was a mistake enabled by my 3-year old. Who knows, maybe he'll hit .330 again....yeah, right.

Rask, I was reading your post and thinking "I like the thought process"...but after Kaz you went away from plan and didnt fill in with any decent sps (though Arroyo in 19 was great value)

agree Schwks but it was probably the result of "feeling" so far behind in the hitting categories.

I agree with your criticism. It is hard to 'catch up' on the offensive categories with 3 of your first 6 picks are pitchers. Throw in Valverde in the 9th and that is 4 out of my first 10 picks.

Basically though I am praying for something from one of Pedro, Masterson or Zito. Or for a few good FAAB pickups, which always seem to be available over the course of a season.

I actually thought you were pretty darn solid offensively after 5 rds with great production, so that if you had taken an extra sp in 6-10 and one in 11-15, you'd have 5 solid guys to build around.

I'm hoping that the good Arroyo shows up, which would give me 4 solid SPs. Or at least 3 1/2. In Valverde and Francisco, I have two high-K rate closers. I think this give me the foundation I need to win Ks. ERA and WHIP should be solid, provided nobody tears a rotator cuff. Wins just can't be predicted but Johan should get a few more this year with the revamped bullpen behind him. Those will likely be offset by Peavy's atrocious team though....

SBs should be OK, but not great. If Figgins shows up feeling fast, then I'll be better. Power is good I think--I am hoping that Reynolds gets more selective. AVG could be an issue either way....

As always, thanks for the input!
Good 'ol Arroyo. I'll never forget earlier this summer when I just came home from work and my co-manager called me. He told me Arroyo had just pitched 1 inning and given up 12 earned runs (or something in the neighborhood)... For the 2nd straight year, he posted solid numbers after the all-star break.
