I am creating a new league concept. It will essentially be a private league, but function like a 45-round NFBC draft champions league. It will be hosted on STATS and drafted as a slow draft on Mock Draft Central.



I am looking to fill this league with frequent MB contributors so as to stimulate good discussion during the draft and during the year.



I will call this the MLB Contract (MLBC) concept. What makes this league different is cost of entry and payouts. Everyone will pay an entry fee based on the cumulative value of the actual 2009 salaries of the players they draft (thru the first 30 rounds).



For every one million dollars in player salary, the cost to draft that player will be $10. So, if you draft A-Rod and his $28 million salary, he would cost you $280 in entry fees (based on his $28 mill salary). If you draft Ryan Braun and his $450,000 salary, he would cost you $5 in entry fees (salaries are rounded to the $100k).



You should be able to spend a couple weeks checking in frequently throughout each day for a slow draft (or at least be reachable by text message or email for your pick).



MLBC League Summary

- Draft Champion format, 45-round slow draft

- KDS to determine draft slots.

- Starting date Januray 30

- You will determine your own entry fee based on the players you draft. If you draft all league minimum players, you would be at a $180 team cost. I estimate the league average will run appx $900-$1000 based on '08 salaries.

- Players will cost $10 per every one million of their actual opening day salary during the first 30 rounds of the draft (with a league minimum $4 corresponding to the MLB $400,000 league minimum salary). All players from rounds 31-45 will cost the league minimum $4 regardless of salary.

- We will have a 31st round reversal (31RR). That's right, the serpentine draft will reverse after 31 rounds to give the back end of the draft slots a small break for those overpriced players than no one wants to spend the money on.

- There will be a "Manager of the Year" payout for the team that most out-performs their payroll. The "Manager of the Year" will be designated as follows: The aggregate payroll for all teams will be totalled. The percentage of each individual team payroll will then be determined in relation to the entire league and multiplied by the total number of league roto points (which is 1,200 points). For example, if the league's entire payroll is 15,000 and your team payroll is 750, then your team would be 5% of the total (750/15,000). This percentage will be multiplied by 1,200 points to get your "benchmark" points, so in this case the benchmark would be 60 points (5% x 1200). The minimum benchmark will be 40 points, so if the above calculation falls below this for any team their benchmark will instead be 40. The team that finishes with the most points over their benchmark will win "Manager of the Year".

hi kj. Just trying to get back into bb after all the craziness at work (will financial service ever calm down???). I am way behind on research and following bb so I am more dead money than normal.



I don't think I can play this league but it is a very interesting idea. How do you handle incentive payouts?

I've matched up 2008 salaries with the recent Shawn Childs lge, and found that at $10 per one million in salary, the total cost of all drafted players would be $17,272 based on those '08 salaries.



So, assuming even all the overpriced players are drafted the average entry per team would be $1,150 thru the first 30 rounds. There are plenty of those guys (Paul LoDuca, Scott Rolen, Julio Lugo) that certainly won't be drafted, so I think the average team would spend $900-1000, and on a budget you could probably be competitive for $400-500. All of that is in the ballpark of where I wanted this to be, so that formula is good $10 = one million.



If that's steep for some of our best guys in this economy, find a partner! This will be a great league that will value players more like what they would actually be like on the open market in real baseball.

Ok so is this a 15 team league? What would be the planned pay outs? And did you say a DC, but with only 30 rounds? Or is it 30 rounds with "free" FAAB?

Very cool idea, and complex!



This league would be one of the most fun to track during the season.



Some will root for the NYY/BOS types who paid the big bucks for the players they needed, but most would be rooting for the low budget teams to defeat the evil empire teams!



Having it a "Slow 45" is perfect, so all the undrafted big contract players wouldn't be gobbled up during the first free agency period. In this format...they are simply left unsigned!



I hope this league gets a rotoworld writeup at some point during the season! Depending how the draft goes...there could be some "in your face Evil Empire", or "I squash you like bug, team tightpenny!" drama! (The league style itself could also catch on)

One thing about the structure of this league...you don't really give away sleepers or Main event strategy, due to the impact of player contracts and the like.

We're down to one spot remaining. I am waiting to hear back from a couple of guys that I invited and I think we will be full.

Also, I am working on updated salaries. My plan for that is to have a list of salaries to distribute to everyone fairly soon. I think the easiest way to proceed is that we will call my spreadsheet the official player salaries - at some before the draft we will lock those in - to avoid any confusion over contract incentives, new signings, etc, etc.

KJ are you changing some of the crazy ones like Braun at 4 or just puting in contracts of players not on the list.

I'm not adjusting salaries up because the player is worth more than their contract - just updating players under contract or newly signed to their actual '09 salaries as best I can. The list won't be perfect but it will be close to reality - no one has an easy to download database of player salaries. USA Today puts one out after the season begins, but I think locking them in pre-draft at known values makes more sense, to avoid disputes later.
