I must admit that I don't compete in many single-league DRAFTS, but yesterday it was fun to jump into Fanball.com's NL-only draft for their upcoming Just Cheat Sheets magazine. Other familiar folks in that draft included Todd Zola, Perry Van Hook, Ted Carlson and Matthew Pouliot. I got the 13th pick, which trust me, isn't a fun spot in a single-league DRAFT!!! Can I bid $40 for Hanley Ramirez, please?
I'll just post the first six rounds for fun and let you buy the magazine for the rest of the results. It was fun, but man these single-league drafts are painful at the end. I can't imagine what the LABR League reserve round will look like come March.

Okay, single-league rosters always look so full of holes and I'm sure mine looks the same. Drafting down at the bottom wasn't fun, but I took the power in the early rounds and tried to fill in with speed little, probably falling short on offense. I have a worthy staff that should compete for wins, strikeouts and saves, but obviously this team would still be chasing power and speed throughout the year.
Oh well, have fun with it anyway. From the 13th hole, here it is:
C - Jesus Flores
C - J.R. Towles
1B - Prince Fielder
2B - Eric Young Jr.
SS - Ryan Theriot
3B - Edwin Encarnacion
CI - Dmitri Young
MI - Ray Durham
UT - Fernando Tatis
OF - Manny Ramirez
OF - Jay Bruce
OF - Lastings Milledge
OF - Jody Gerut
OF - Gregor Blanco
P - Roy Oswalt
P - Josh Johnson
P - Johnny Cueto
P - John Maine
P - Randy Wolf
P - Jose Valverde
P - Chris Perez
P - JC Romero
P - Logan Kensing

No questions? Well one I see it's nine pitchers not ten. So not a real draft by NFBC standards.

Yeah, post your team and Todd's. Todd started off with Braun and Kemp and kept getting nice bargains to fall to him. I liked his team and Matthew Pouliot's team. Matt grabbed guys I wanted five picks before me several times.

Okay, posting between phone calls for the moment, but can anyone guess my team? (without reading further)......I can tell you in the rounds shown above, I let one of Todd's favorite young OF fall to him....and in the above rounds my position only has one pitcher of the six players.

Very good Rob (presuming you did not have help
While I love Braun as much as Todd does, this was the first NL only draft I have done this year and in that context, considered Rollins slightly more valuable especially at a MI position.
Roster soon

C Doumit-4, Kendall-16
CI Sandoval-8, Feliz-12, Blum-17
MI Johnson-5, Lopez-10, Renteria-11
OF Braun-1, Kemp-2, Pence-3, Schierholtz-20, Michaels-21
UT Reed-22
SP Nolasco-6, Lowe-7, Wandy-13, Bush-14, Arroyo-15
MR Villanueva-18, Wade-19, Brocail-23
CL Qualls-9
From my experience, what usually makes the difference in deep leagues is the part-timers that get more AB than expected, my last 2 OF and UT are guys that at least MIGHT get more AB than most forecasters will suggest in their projections.
In leagues like this, I don't worry as much about saves and steals, if I am going to be short on a category, that is where I look to be deficient.
I also do not hesitate to carry good, high-K setup men.
Hammer away

Perry, Thank you so much for pointing out that most NL auctions only draft 9 pitchers. But being the fact that this is the NFBC and we draft 10 pitchers I think the point needed to be made.
You want to brag about your 9 pitcher league do it on your web site. Don't try to school me on these boards. Loser!

Is there an innings requirement?

Good questions guys
What I was told was that it was a mock draft for their "Cheatsheets".....so I aprroached it like I would a normal draft..planning to get a "normal", balanced team.
As far as I know it is NOT being played out and there was no suggestion of an innings requirement or necessity of having both SP and RP.
So again, I had no plan of going all reliever.
My first pick was Rollins - I thought about Braun but as pointed out above I think in an NL only format, Rollins was more valuable. Very pleasantly surprised to get Carlos Lee at 2.08. In the third round, I wanted to take the best hitter available and definitely wanted a 1B while the pickings were good, and I took Votto - I like both his upside this year and the SB he will contribute from that position.
There were a total of 8 SP taken in the first three rounds - only one in the fourth round before my pick and I was quite comfortable thinking I would start my pitchers with a starter like Javier Vazquez - hopefully Vazquez and Nolasco if I took two starters or I might start with best closer. So I took Delgado to add power AND put pressure on the 1B for the rest of the drafters.
So in the first four+ rounds to my pick in the 5th round there had only been 9 pitchers taken - two of them closers and here I misjudged what would happen....and forgot who was behind me and would pick before me in the 6th round. So naturally in the remainder of the 5th round two more SP were taken and then three more in the early sixth, including not only Vazquez, ....but Nolasco to Todd right in front of me while he laughed and waved............ so I took Marmol and waited to see what would come back...and that was Sheets, Scherzer, and Wainwright taken, so the best starter I could have taken was Lowe, Dempster, or Harden and at that point I had to make HALF a decision - I could take one (I guess Harden and pray like hades he could pitch a whole season) and chase....or I could take a second closer and delay the decision........I took Capps, watched

as Lowe, Dempster, Myers, and Harden were taken before my next pick - in fact in a row in the 7th round.
So just like in real life leagues, I turned left rather than follow the herd. YES, I have one only point in Wins and (probably)Strikeouts, but I should roll 13 in the other three pitching categories............meanwhile I have more AB and more offense than the rest of the league (I think, haven't crunched any numbers, I will leave that for Lord Zola if he is inclined).
It isn't perfect
It isnt' for everyone
It WILL win single leagues..........and that is what I was doing a mock draft for (and frankly people talk about strategies and rarely get to see someone draft it......so hopefully I helped someone who has never done it before and wants to see what the team looks like

If I knew he was starting for sure, I'd bust him out in the 12th round. A guy like this could be a 2nd rounder in 2 years. Maybe that sounds like hype (it is), but he sure looks attractive for a late 20th rounder this draft, even if he starts out in the minors.
I know they worked him out in centerfield in the AFL, but I hope (along with the fantasy nation) he sticks at 2nd in the majors. He can be a difference maker for sure.

and how did you do Mr. Duck against Ferrari's all reliever team a few years ago.
Yes I have won several leagues with an all reliever staff and against very good players. We don't play simulation leagues - in rotisserie leagues it is a valid strategy just like punting Saves or punting Stolen Bases are strategies that people have used and done well with.
Come on up to Vegas and we'll see if you have game

Come on up to Vegas and we'll see if you have game Kimo tried that S against me before and I beat him like a drum with it. Another player here tried it a few years ago as well and I slapped him to sleep and then slapped him for sleeping.
Kimo is tough, he finished in front of me last year, but I would think he would tell you that I'd got the best of him through out the years. He now knows that that kind of amateurish trick won't work against real players. I believe that I finished 1st the year he tried that? I could be wrong, it might have been 2nd. There have so many damned money finishes there I can’t keep track. Why don't you sign up and give it a whirl? You'll cry uncle by the break. You won't find too many weak links there to pull it off.
I have no axe to grind with you, only a strong difference of opinions with players that try to skirt the spirit of the game for which it was intended. I think it hurts the game and makes a mockery of it. It’s baseball not a math test.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Good luck to you in your future endeavors, FUDD [/QUOTE]An amateurish trick that wont work against real players, ya know the ones that wont play in high stakes events, but just talk alot of crap.
