Computers VS BRAINS

This is not the first time this has been brought up. Ron Shandler did a write up about it.

I myself am a pen and paper guy. I know Childs and Gillis are too. I know some like Perry Van Hook and Todd Zola swear by computers. I'd say in the Las Vegas AL auction it is probably 50/50.

4 titles won by paper guys, 1 I'm not sure about. So for the computer guys what makes it better?

My laptop during the draft/auction is really nothing more than a piece of paper and highlighter. I don't run drafting software, track standings or even track the other rosters. What other people print out from their computers, I have on my screen in front of me. Instead of a highlighter, I color in the background of the cell.

The main reason I do it is I can find the player and my information regarding that player with a quick CTRL F -- for me, it is faster than shuffling through my papers.

In the NFBC auctions, they do it on the draft/roster board. Once it is end-game time and we have a 'money check', I will pull out the archaic pen and paper and track positions, #players, max bid etc.

Lord Zola-I am suprised you are not tracking all of that from the opening bell. They should have a board which records by position and price, not in pick order-an auction is not a draft.

First of all ALL drafts/auctions have the big board which uses stickers which ARE color coded by position.

They are listed below the team that buys them - if they were listed by position how would you know who bought them with a quick look from all around the table?

And the prices are recorded next to each player with a running total for each team (but that can only be seen up close which is fine for the people running the draft. The participants verify anything they need to/want to during a break.

You are obviously not too observant Wallow Wallow - I never use a laptop DURING an auction (and rarely during a draft) if I am the bidder. (if I am the non bidding partner I might soley to do tracking)

One of the key things for me in NOT using a computer during an auction and most drafts despite being very computer oriented is that if I am making data entries, I CAN'T observe everything happening with the other bidders - and that is key during the auction.

Another item that is extremely important for auction players is to KNOW who the underbidders were. Very difficult to watch that, mannerisms, body language and still make all the entries.

the board would be organized by team-it's not that difficult-current method seems an inefficient way to me-seems to work for you-I have my own "board"- look forward to seeing you in LV

i think being on the computer would distract...

i would like to hear from any league winners who used a computer....i would bet there are VERY FEW computer user winners....

Last year Ken and I did not use a computer in the Ultimate Auction and did OK. Ken came in with his plan/values/targeting and I tracked positions, money, and trending. It worked for us.

I like the simplicity of the pen paper as you never have to worry about a battery dying or the evil demons at Microsoft deciding to lock up at a critical moment.

big difference between draft and auction-I could see a computer doing quite well at the draft-lots of time in between picks-in an auction you could possibly be bidding on every player-very little time to work on the computer.

I have done fine in an nfbc auction using a computer. Personally, I like keeping track of who needs what position etc... and I just can't do that as easily with pen and paper. Having said that, I think either is fine. Frankly as we get better applications (like where rotoworld is going), the value of the computer goes up.

One technique I liked last year for the main event draft was doing all my prep on the computer, then bringing all in on an 11x17 sheet.

Sadly whether paper or computer, nothing would have stopped me from taking Rollins in the 1st round last year or who I sat between
