What do you think your number one strength as a fantasy baseball player is?



I think mine is finding undervalued pitching and all of your antics aside... you need to be commended for Volquez, Cueto, Duscherer and Saunders last year. Wow... Just think if you would not have told me Lester and Baker were garbage preseason...

On another thread you said that you haven't started your pitcher projections as yet. When making your projections, what comes first:



What you saw last season, putting numbers aside and going with the visual.



Numbers, its all about the numbers. Do you throw in the numbers that satisfy you most, put 'em in the computer and see what it spits out.



A combination of the two where you like what you saw out of a pitcher and pleasantly surprised that the numbers match up as well.



You like to quote outside sources a lot on the Boards. Do you respect the opinion of an outside source enough to affect the drafting position of a pitcher?



I have my pet pitching stats for pitchers as indicators for the following season, what are yours and how much would you count them over everyday pitching stats when it comes to projecting pitchers?

2a) Do you have specific targets for the first few (more predictable rounds) or just take BPA?



2b) If 2a was yes, for how many rounds and After that 3-5 round plan do you draft for BPA or team needs?

After reviewing your team from last year, I saw two major mistakes. Number one was carrying Furcal for three months with the hope of catching a couple hot weeks in September. Number two was spending huge dollar on Matt Scherzer and then holding onto him like he was your long lost friend.



My first question is: After carrying a worthless player for three months, would you do it again? If not, what is your time frame for holding onto hurt players?



The second question is: After reviewing your teams, was the purchase of Scherzer a misread of the strength of your team? And at what point should you take the loss after making a huge free agent purchase mistake?

i am thinking about drafting just 1 closer this year and letting everyone else draft potential closers in the late rounds while i stock up on hitting and sp potential...am i making a strategic blunder???

do you think shawn childs will be sipping the koolaid on andruw jones again this year and if he makes the team would you draft him??...rumor has it he has lost 25 pounds and looks like jurney from the chicago draft last year...thoughts please

If you had just asked him if he wanted to be considered the GREATEST player of all - then that might have given more validity to your question.

GG - how frustrating is it that you have been top 10 the last 2 years and know that you are that close to winning it all and just can't get over the top. I think I already know the answer to this one. Do you feel you have to compete in auctions, ultimates, supers to be considered one of the best. My feelings are there is nothing wrong with being great at one type of event.

Are you a believer of the studs and scrubs strategy in auction leagues or do believe in a group of 18-25 dollar players?



Also, given the $260 budget, what is the target for pitching? $80-$85??

thanks for the compliments on my backend pitching last year. I wish I could have that every year. It would make my job a lot easier.



As for lester and baker, they were both back end options. They weren’t at the top of my list because I didn’t see a lot of numbers support. Lester walks too many and baker is a flyball pitcher who doesn’t get enough k’s.

I see Greg has put on the Site 5 owners that maybe worth Hall Of Fame considerations. Why are you better than those 5.

I usually start with shandler’s projections as a baseline and then go through team by team and player by player and adjust. There’s a lot of fat to cut from shandler’s #’s so it take me a while.



I look at each player’s past three years performance (if they are minor leaguers, it takes me a little while to decipher the stats), and then I try to apply it to their 2009 situation. After I’m done, it doesn’t look like shandler’s #’s at all.



I may quote a lot of sources, but the only ones that have anything of value is HQ. and even that is limited. BA is okay for general info, but I can get that on the net for free.



For evaluating pitchers, I don’t care what a pitcher’s era or whip was the year before. That should tell you what #’s I do look at!

If the baseball event ever had a similar event to the Fisher Party, do you think you will be a player in that format or just an observer?

1.I heard Howard should be ranked above Poodles at Shandler’s York get-together 2 days ago.



2. of course I have a plan when I sit down at the draft table. People laugh when I say the draft is won before draft day for me. I know who I want. I know the rounds I’ll get them. The only thing I don’t know is what specific players are going to slip too far, and then I’ll have to gobble them up! If someone doesn’t have a plan, they might as well play the lottery.



3. nah, I don’t have specific targets in the first few rounds. I know the #’s my team needs to put up and it’s my job to get them throughout the draft. The first three rounds are only a small part of the puzzle.



4. "team needs" drating doesn’t usually come up for me until round 15-20. if I need a MI, I don’t want to get left with crap, so I’ll need to bite on one before it gets too late.

So, your 1st question is, would I carry a worthless player for three months? If I KNOW he is worthless, I would drop him in a heartbeat, like I did to helton. If I do NOT know and it’s a subjective decision, I’ll probably hold him longer if he’s a more productive player or until the news gets worse.



Scherzer ended up being a huge bust for the money. Along those lines, most “younger” and “inexperienced” players were busts…Hughes, i.kennedy, b.butler, etc…I’ve updated my CBA this year to put less emphasis on “younger” and “inexperienced” players.



Take a loss on making a huge FAAB pickup? I’ll drop someone if they don’t look like they’ll provide me value. Same as any free agent.
