2008 was my first season participating in the NFBC, and going in I thought that skill and preparation would be needed to put me in the hunt for a league title, and good fortune would be required to push me over the top. Luckily for me, I had just enough of the former and a heaping dose of the latter to snare my first win.
Las Vegas 7 was packed with tough competition as seven teams battled for money positions during the second half of the season. It was only in the final few days that three teams were able to break away, and I needed a John Danks win during the AL tiebreaker game to claim first place.
In retrospect, the key to my season was probably sticking with the players I had drafted when things were not going well early in the year. I liked the team I selected on draft day, but I spent virtually the entire first quarter of the season ranked 350 or lower. Other than one breakdown when I tried to suffocate myself with a bowl of oatmeal, I stayed calm and held fast to my original plan. The one complete miss I had in player selection was Rich Hill. I sure didn't see that one coming.
The entire NFBC draft weekend was fabulous. There's nothing like seeing a slew of draft boards and 150 or so players that have a similar passion for the game together in one giant conference room. I also had a great time during the fast-paced AL auction although I had my clock cleaned in that one. It was great to meet Greg and several of the players, and I'm looking forward to meeting many more folks in March.
