Throwing an idea out there....

Post by Geoffrey Stein » Thu Mar 12, 2009 11:35 am

Hey guys,

In the past, I know that many of you have made it to our live expert drafts and watched NFBC favorite Tom Kessenich draft a team.

Here's my idea: NFBC expert drafts - Tuesday night next week.

After you get your draft spots tomorrow, you can drop me an e-mail giving me your draft spot and if you can draft on Tuesday, March 17 at 8 pm ET.

I'll then do my best to put together a few NFBC-style drafts where you can draft out of your Main Event spot.

We'll also allow viewers who want in to see how things are going down and open up the chat to them as well.

The beauty of it all: it will all be anonymous. All teams will be listed: Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, etc.... I will be the only one with the info regarding who is drafting out of what spot -- your secret is safe with me :)

Viewers will also be anonymous. Even in the chat, it will show up as just "Viewer".

We'll run as many of these as I can fill, and open them all up to the public. The key, though, is your ability to draft live on Tuesday night. NO AUTOPICKS!

So my questions are:

1) Would you be interested in drafting?

2) Would you be interested in watching?

3) Would you be interested in the results?

You can answer here on the board or drop me an e-mail - geoff at mockdraftcentral.com.

I'll keep you updated on where we stand. Thanks, guys.

Geoff,

First off let me say - great idea. You once again have helped make the SAT season a huge success, with all the new leagues and slow drafts. This is a great offer to NFBC drafters. I do think there will be many who won't want to publically state that they are interested for fear that others will be able to zero in on their teams, but hopefully many will contact you privately to participate.

Again, I think it's a great idea and I hope the NFBC community sees both sides of the street here. While I immediatly see the benefit and fun for myself - I also see this as a way to give back a little to MDC for the great job you guys do. These drafts would be must see events!!!

So, count me in Geoff and I am sure your mailbox will be full soon.

I like it, but can't we have cool anonymous names ? I'd like to see a draft that looks something like this:

Dusty Baker

Alan Greenspan

The Stache

The GEICO Gekko

Jessica Alba

Stewie Griffith

Clint Eastwood

Jon Stewart

Manny Ramirez

Ron Paul

Bernie Madoff

Alec Baldwin

Terrell Owens

George Bush

If I was available to draft or watch on Tuesday night I would be very interested.

Like all the rest I'm sure, I would be VERY interested in seeing the results. An ADP sent out on Thursday from the Tuesday night drafts for all main event participants???

Or, if sending it out is too much work, how about posting the Tuesday night ADP at the MDC site on Wednesday or Thursday??

Why should those who don't participate get the benefit of that ADP research Fred?

Hook , I work while these are taking place and would like to see how these pan out .I have been in the main the last 5 years and do the sat lgs. as well. I dont see the big deal if all were allowed to view the results. I would love to take part but work dosen't allow it at this time slot.

If you've supported the NFBC this season through participation in paid satellites or the main event, you should get access to the Tues night results. I have enough data already so I'm good either way- just defending those who can't always live and breathe fantasy baseball on a weekday night who might want access to the draft results. Obviously not my call, just my opinion.

I hate to be the devil's advocate here, but what benefit is there really for seeing the results of this draft?

I can see the benefit in listening to the chat regarding the reasoning behind their picks but other than that, do you change your ranking of players or draft structure because you saw Ethier go in the 6th round instead of 7th. I don't get it.

I see more a benefit in being in the draft than witnessing it. Just my take.

I think that if MDC just wants to run the drafts and have no one watching or ADP then sure, just the guys who can make it on Tuesday night will get their own league's results. But, if anyone can have access to watching all the drafts on Tuesday night then maybe ADP's could be compiled and shared for all so that the many people who are busy at that specific time can see some results. If the drafts were held at various times during the week then I would say you have to show up to see them, but if they are only at one specific time then sharing the results could be considered fair.

Seeing the ADP's still wouldn't provide them with the same value as being able to use your own pick and practice your own strategy without having to reveal yourself. That is probably the best practice there is.

Plus, posting the ADP's on MDC.com would give Geoff's sites lots of hitting during the rest of the week, which can't hurt since he spent the time organizing them!

To Hook...an honest answer is I could not reveal my strategy this close to D-day...and to count on all 15 to do the same is pretty illogical.

Let's see...we study our asses off and try to find every edge or advantage we can...and then poof...at the request of a super nice guy, and with only one week to go...we reveal it all for the sake of knowing/gaining what a few others who are dumb enough to reveal it all...reveal.

No way.

To be honest, I don't think this form of draft prep. is THAT valuable. Just because you get someone in a practice draft doesn't mean that your real draft will fall that way. It is another tool for prep., which is nice. I gave the ADP idea because I NEVER turn down the chance for more information! But in reality, the best drafters will know their player pool, their strategy and their fallback plan shortly after they get their draft spot today and will be ready to go on the 21st either way. For all of you who are available to pick on Tuesday night, happy drafting! I will be in Palm Springs, so I can't complain!

One thing I have noticed.....we are one tense group heading into today at noon. Like most kids at Christmas, we will probably all be asleep on the living room floor with all our new toys (draft orders, ADP printouts and draft lists) all around us by the middle of the afternoon today!

No way. While I think it is always fine to express an opinion-you could have made your point without insulting your "dumb" NFBC brethren.

Where does it say you have to employ whatever master strategy you have devised or actually draft ANY of the players or super-sleepers you are actually targeting? Geoff merely mentions allowing you the chance to draft from your spot-nothing more.

I will say that your reaction kind of re-inforces Perry's previous post regarding who should get access to the data IMO-Perhaps ADP data should only go to those "Dumb" enough to contribute their time, talent and expertise to the endeavor.

You are correct. I should not have used the word dumb.

I would not expect to see too many "A" games here, nor "sleepers" nor much I could learn from, being only one league, and with people playing it safe.

That said...I'll most likely watch.

I'll be the one in the chat box saying everyone is dumb! :D
