Purely economic or baseball decision?

Well, he did have options and could probably use a little seasoning. That said, he would have made just about any other roster. Hmmmmm.

Like Baltimore with Weiters, they're going to save some dough. The difference is that Baltimore has no shot of winning. Tampa Bay, if they finish a game or two back will regret the decision.

Now I guess my boy Wade Davis has zero shot at the cheapo Rays rotation. You'd think with their success, and muscling their way into the NYY v. BOS rivalry would have changed their goals.
I guess it's back to being the prospect churning factory for the rest of MLB. Cheapo's I say!
Lazy footnote...
Is it just me and my conspiracy (You can't spell conspiracy without PIRACY, Matey!!!) theories...or is there some unwritten deals made when shopping players to serve them meatballs at the plate? (see COL Baker and Torrealba)
Hmmm...if Tom married Jessica...and she refused to lose her last name...TommyAlba! They could name their kid Beat Yourveet!
Sorry.

~Lance Not IF, but WHEN. NFBC's collective power of positive thinking will make this happen.

i think the rays had a couple pitchers out of options. hamel and someone else. they sent down price because he had options rather than just lose a quality arm.

The thing is that the Rays are not thinking like winners, they're thinking like past losers. Every game counts in the A.L. East. It's too bad they'll end up giving away a few.

The Ocho is right ,Hammel and Nieman are out of options.Damn i have a american league auction draft sunday and have Price at a dollar. We can keep 6 so i will still keep him. This might drop him a few rounds in the upcoming drafts.

Who knows maybe Price will sign a contract and be called up. Just like Longoria did last year. Just a bad move if you ask me. They say they want to save innings on him. Well last I checked AAA innings are the same as MLB innings. Put him in the pen like Santana back in the day. Move him to the rotation when an arm goes down or once he wont project over 170 IP or whatever they want to keep him at. 50 MILB IP and 120 MLB IP don't help them much but 170 MLB IP does. Not the message you want to send your team.

In Tampa's defense, he did walk 6 in 8 innings this spring. He wasn't entirely unhittable.
He has 32 innings above AA. It's not the worst move in the world.

No doubt soon to be followed by Tommy Hanson. For those like myself who did draft one or both of these young guns knew that this was a possibility.

IMHO, i feel the Rays are totally happy with the front four of shields, kazmir, garza, and sonnanstine. the 5th starters don't come into play in april that much anyway. give Price some good starts in AAA and see what happens. i don't think MONEY is that big of a deal if he's a STUD. after all. the rays are for real, if it cost them money to get back to where they were last year, thet'll do it. they have everything in place except the end-game. if they get some bullpen support this year, they'll be back.
