How much is too much?

Post by bigdaddyk » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:31 am

I have entered a total of 5 teams so far this season{3 with the NFBC and 2 with YAHOO}Do NFBC players think this number is normal, too high or too low? Also can there be such a thing as fantasy overload? Is it possible to have too many teams? What is your over/under for number of teams in a season?

In the past, I have entered as many as 12 teams (not all $ leagues). I've learned my lesson as this was way too high for my tastes. It basically became me cheering on every player since in the 12 combined leagues, I had a majority of the players on my team. So, this year, I'm in 3 leagues at the moment. This seems to be a good number for my liking and keeps me engaged with a select few players v.s. pulling for (or sometimes not caring) most players in the MLB. That was my "fantasy overload". Hope that helps.

"Enough" is very subjective depending on your fantasy enjoyment and your ability to manage your teams. Unless you have keen organizational skills and/or a tremendous memory you may start losing track of which players are on each given team. When you are watching a "meaningless game in September" it is fun to watch your players in action.

I have 8 teams (ESPN, 2 Yahoo, 4 UFS, and the NFBC main). This is "enough" for me.

I don't play as much anymore as I used to, but 10 years ago a normal baseball season for me would have been 20 teams.

I do have a very good memory for the rosters of each and didn't struggle so much there (I often resorted to naming my teams based on their glaring needs, i.e. if a color was in the name I needed pitching - just a personal code to help me manage quickly and efficiently KNOWING when I clicked on the Red Dog team it was pitching deficient helped).

The fact is you do the research for 'baseball' anyway, so applying that research to 2 teams or 20 isn't really that much different - takes about 30 min to bust through the rosters every day.

Nowadays I have 6 and that's a good number to handle easily ...

Yeah it all depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it.I ended up with 27 leagues with 2 of them being salary cap contest. I feel like I can do it because, fanball league are 10 team league so not as hard to manage.

18 $100 Fanball Draft and Play

1 $500 Fanball Draft and Play

1 $1000 Fanball Draft and Play

1 Fanball High Roller Team

1 Internet challenge Entry

1 Yahoo Team

1 NFBC $125 Slow Draft Satellite

1 NFBC Main Event team

1 NFBC Onine championship Team

1 NFBC $1,000 Satellite

I'm in 5 NFBC satellite leagues and after the last draft I started to wonder how I was planning on winning all these leagues with so many different players rostered on each team. I think it's possible with there being so many ways to "skin a cat" but I don't know how probable it is.

I did notice, though, that my Dad and I, when drafting these teams week after week, became a lot more efficient and willing to wait for key players to fall to make sure we either got max value out of them or missed them completely.

For instance, in our first draft back in February we took Zimmerman in the 6th round. The draft we did last night we took him in 10th. I'm sure the spring affected his status, but I still think we improved with each draft and that alone I think is worth doing as many as you can handle.

Unlike football, where I usuallly do at least 10-15 leagues a year I limit my baseball leagues to 6-8 because of free agency.

Free agency can be time consuming especially because of the larger player pool in baseball. Efficient management of free agency is essential for success in fantasy baseball especially NFBC leagues. Every league I have won so far I can point to key waiver pickups that I made during the season that put me over the top.

I admire people that can manage 10-15 NFBC teams or more but there is no way in heck I could do that and devote the amount of time needed to correctly manage free agency. I have no idea how yahoo or espn or fanball contests work in terms of time committment for free agency as the only fantasy baseball I have ever played in my life have been NFBC leagues.

17 for me this season. Most I've played in at one time was 24.

To be honest, if I were only in 5, it wouldn't feel like a real fantasy season for me.
I not sure, but I've really pushed the bar this year. In the past I could do 8 no problem on Sunday during a 4 to 6 hour period with two of the leagues being AL and NL only which require less time. With three online teams, I might have added too much to get done by 8. Once the baseball season starts Sundays are locked up until week 16 in football.

Anything more than two teams is craziness.

I am in a H2H Yahoo league with friends and a satellite NFBC. That's it. A great reason why I play fantasy sports is rooting for certain players and against others. If I have 8 teams I wouldn't really know who to root for each week as I would have probably drafted the whole MLB player pool.

I think the key for Shawn or anyone else playing alot of leagues is to have alot of your teams in contention throughout the year. Come All Star break if Shawn's in the money in alot of his leagues Sunday's will be something to look forward to. I wish all the luck this season Shawn and come OCT I hope you return 50% or more on your invesment.

As I have many teams, there are many players that I won't draft. When the season starts, there will be alot of overlap from team to team.

It's also not about rooting for players that you like. It goes well beyond that.

What it is, is the endless hours of research, beginning in October. Formulating strategies after the research has been finished to optimize the chosen players with their positions and maximizing those players efforts into the 10 categories.

It's total geekdom. But it's our geekdom. What you described is how we all started. You may win your league and that fire may burn a little hotter inside you next year. If it does, maybe we'll see you at one of the venue's. If not, keep rooting for those players.

With the improved FABB from last season...the time it takes to sort and place bids has been cut in half...great for this game.

Add in the new Draft Champions type league that I think will grow in popularity (and bench size ;) ) next year, and BAMN...you can easily handle 4 more leagues than last year.
First year here, I hope this turn out into a good experience and maybe I'll show up in one of your venues next year. But I will still be drafting just one team. I believe if you're good you give it one shot to win the pool. Otherwise, you just drive yourself crazy and probably break even. But that's my opinion.

So far I like this site for the seriousness of the players and the high payouts. Other public sites including Sportsline may have better website features but they are ripoffs and lack good players.

I manage enough teams to the point that I don't have time to actually watch the games. I watch most of the 1st game Sunday but after that it's a total mosh pit of free agents, trends, stats and tweaking for 6 months.
