A sad day for baseball and football. An especially sad week for baseball.

Just saw the news...what a drag. As a child of the 70's I grew up listening to Harry & Whitey (Richie Ashburn).

Chicago had Caray, NY had the Scooter (and Kiner!) LA still has Vin Scully.

For me the best there ever was is gone today.

Wow, lots of sad news already this season. I grew in the Philly area in the 70's & 80's and I can't imagine watching a Phillies game without him. I am glad he was there for the championship season in 2008, but he will sure be missed!

I join the previous posters in saluting Harry Kalas - another HOF broadcaster.

He was actually preparing for the Phillies game today against the Nationals and passed out in the broadcast booth preparing his notes for the game.....sad day but good memories of Kalas.

Living in New York, I didn't get to hear much of his work with the Phillies. With that said, just about ANY football fan knows Kalas as the voice of "NFL Films" productions. I loved the fact that he could make a 4-12 team seem like a Super Bowl contender. A great loss for all sports fans.

That's right - he was THE MAN of the football films stuff!!

We bought a country house in Penn. a couple of years ago - and since have watched a lot of Phillies games - and enjoyed finally getting to listen to him on a regular basis.

Since we are talking broadcasters - I wanted to note that Herb Score, the longtime Indians radio man, passed away in Nov. 08. After his playing career was cut short, he turned to broadcasting and was on the air for over 30 years before retiring in 1997. Ironically, his last game was Game 7 & of the World Series that year. For many Tribe fans, Score's no nonsense style was the perfect way to listen to the Indians on the radio over the years. He was the voice of my baseball youth - and I just wanted to mention him again here.

Being from Philadelphia and a lifetime Phillies fan even before Harry Kalas, he was one of the best announcers which makes baseball as great as it is. There usually is time between pitches that you get to know your announcers and they help you enjoy the game. Harry did not overtake the game, he was like an excellent umpired game you noticed them but did not noticed them.

Just a couple things I heard today: R. Amaro current GM was talking in the booth with Larry Anderson and told the story of when he played in 1992 with the Phils he hit his 1st homerun and after the game Harry make a copy of the homerun call he made A COPY and gave it to Rueben Amaro.

Another thing he did alot of was for couples getting married, if you contacted him he would record your introduction for the wedding reception in his famous OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!! voice which is said to have been his normal voice.

I just wanted to list my sorrow and prayers for his family and the extended family of baseball fans which he loved like all the great announcers.

Nothing beat Harry Kalas or John Facenda to the sounds of Sam Spence.
