Cueto is rolling through 4 innings. 1 hit, 3 walks, 3 K's.
5th inning, gets 2 outs. Then comes up the almighty Roy Oswalt. He must have intimidated Cueto enough for him to totally miss the plate. Cueto goes full count on Roy (not Hobbs). Walks him? What's he thinking? Put the damn ball right down the middle. It's not like Gallardo's at bat here. Then comes the ferocious Michael (no relation to Jason) Bourn(e). The mere thought of bloop single scared the bejesus out of young Johnny. So he walks him on 4 pitches. Then comes Tejada. He goes 0-2 on him. Ok, looks like he's gonna get out of it. Nope. Single to left field. Bases loaded. Now I'm a little nervous, because I know Cueto's really nervous. What does he do to calm my nerves? Walks his 3rd batter of the inning to give up his first run. Baker wisely takes Cueto out as he obviously comes completely unraveled. Lincoln comes in, gets a groudout, inning over. One earned run in 4 2/3 inning looks good, 6 walks from a guy who didn't walk anybody in the minors makes me think he'll take longer to adjust to the pressures of the major leagues. He better get his head on straight or it's gonna be a rocky season. I did predict a 3.70 e.r.a. - 1.25 whip - 180 K season. He is definitely capable, I need those stats for my online championship team.
I like Cueto alot this year amongst other young pitchers but they seriously are the biggest rollercoaster ride that you'll go through. Up and down, up and down, just give me 2 good months in a row out of Cueto and I'll be ecstatic.
Anybody have any young pitchers on their team they really like but also make you really nervous whenever they pitch?

He's a guy that never did anything in the minors until last year. He was somebody I thought about a little bit but ultimately I stayed away from him. His strikeout potential is real but keeping that e.r.a./whip down might be tough. Maybe he's the type that needs a season under his belt before he takes off. Maybe 2010 he'll be rockin'.

Purcey looked much worse than his numbers. He missed by a ton. Terrible mechanics. Cito Gaston looked furious with him. I wouldn't be shocked if he's on his way to AAA in 2 weeks.

As a cueto owner last year and this year it's more of the same. He goes 3 or 4 innings of great ball, 5-6 strikeouts every time it seems. And just when you think he might go 7 with 10K he falls apart in innings 5 or 6. It's his M.O. from last year and tonight put me back in the pain from last year. Except last year Berkman would of hit a grandslam and completely ruin the game so I'm happy with tonights outing but that control has to improve ASAP!

Good post. Not quite following the topic but sharing an ordinary night from someone who loves this game...
The vicissitudes of playing in the nfbc:
Utley hits a 3-run HR tonight just before I'm getting ready to go out for dinner and I'm feeling great and it's the weekend and I'm going to eat good tonight and my fantasy team is awesome and my 2B is a stud and life is soooo goood.
Before I leave, I call my co-manager on the phone to tell him Utley is a stud... then he tells me the Orioles had the bases loaded and Markakis just hit a grand slam and then I remember B Penny is our SP7 tonight. It's just one start is all I tell myself but I find myself saying that phrase a lot during the season! Now I'm not feeling so great, I bet I get a flat tire on my way to dinner (which I did and I'm not kidding), the back end of my rotation sucks, and I don't feel like life is so great anymore (just for a brief moment or two- don't worry, I snap out of it).
My wife is really something to put up with my emotions from march through january. (no football or baseball games or drafts (usually) in feb).

On Cueto, he has great talent, but falling apart the second or third time through the line-up means either he just is not ready for the bigs yet, or will have a great career as a middle reliever.

a young felix comes to mind....rolling thru 3...thinks he gets a k but the ump squeezes him...2 run homer followed by 2 walks and a double...bang!!!! 4 earned in the blink of an eye it all unravels because of 1 pitch.....maturity on the mound is huge...some can pull it back together some cant...felix did pull it together last night but you never know...MATURITY

Man, I hate to admit because it'll make it look like I take this stuff too seriously but how my day goes depends largely on how my teams do. Good day in fantasy, I'm happy in real life. A really bad day in fantasy, frustrated and upset. I know I'm not the only one.

Isn't it always around the 5th inning when the pitchers get lit up? I've watched many of "my" pitchers cruising along until the 4th or 5th and then in the words of Eddie Gillis BAM!

they give up 3-4 runs.
BTW, Dave, have fun with Verlander this season, I know I did last year. I watched him pitch two times and realized I would never draft him again. Unless he learns how to pitch and not simply throw the heat, he will never be more than a 4.50 ERA pitcher.
Regarding the thread, pitchers drive me zonkers in general. You get the studs giving up 5,6,7 runs, meanwhile the lesser knowns like Ricky Romero cruise right along through their games. I know, I know, it's early, but still.

WOW, Matt, if you really let these fake teams dictate your emotions, you might want to take a step back and reevaluate some things.
Life is to short and to precious to worry about things you ultimately have no control over.

it may seem like the 5th or 6th because that is usually the 3rd time they see the starter and make adjustments or notice a sequence to pitches

what I hate is when a pitcher has gone out and given me 6 strong innings, his team is up 5-0, I'm saying to myself bring in a reliever for the 7th and I'll take my zero earned runs and a good shot for a win. Of course that's not what happens, he ends up staying out there for the 7th and gives up 3 earned runs.

early in the season and these managers leave these guys out ot dry,,,coming out of spring training you would think these guys would have a quicker hook, certainly with the young guys,,i see a lot of potentially good young pitchers confidence being shot. leads to a lot of ugly picthing lines!!
