Top 10 List, Home Run Trots

Tough, damn tough list to come up with.

I was actually looking at Roberto Clemente's swings yesterday, in between sparring with Lance, (See? And you say we don't have time for twice a week moves :D )and noticing on some of Clemente's swings that both feet have no contact with the ground while making contact with the ball on his bat, an amazing thing to see.

Anyway this particular swing resulted in a home run, hence the thought about the list.

10. Dave Parker...Not many enjoyed a hr more than Parker. He took so long that pitchers were apt to plunk him during his next at bat. He ran with his fingers extended, never knew why.

9. Jimmy Piersall...Alot of emotional problems. Sometimes he would laugh while trotting, sometimes cry. On his 100th career home run, he went around the bases from third, to second, to first, to home. The rule book was changed immediately after.

8. Mel Hall...Another guy who enjoyed his home runs and probably had the slowest trot in history. Once, ESPN put a split screen of one of Hall's home runs with an inside the park home run by Bo Jackson. Jackson went around the bases twice before Mel touched home.

7. Mickey Mantle...The Mick almost looked ashamed of his achievment until he would get home and flash that great smile to the next hitter.

6. Jeffrey Leonard...Flap down. It wasn't much, but a hr in baseball is as close to a td in football and td's are almost always celebrated. I give Leonard credit for doing at least something that doesen't pisss off a pitcher.

5. Pete Rose... While Parker and Hall were the slowest around the bases, Pete was one of the quickest. After hitting a home run and flying around the bases, he was approached by Frank Robinson, who said, "Kid, you better leave those homers to those who can act them out!"

4.Ted Williams... He wanted nothing to do with the fans of Boston and especially the press in Boston. Refusing to tip his hat which was customary during the day. If there ever was a home run trot with the body language of "f you everybody", Williams had it. Of course this does not include his exuberant home run trot to win an all-star game.

3. Rickey Henderson... Rickey would slowly watch the ball out of the box, tug on his uni, hit his helmet twice, skip, and then go around the bases. Upon nearing each base, he would pause as if to hit it just right.

2.Babe Ruth... During the earlier years, home runs weren't common. The Babe would doff his hat and even twirl it in the air. He took alot of guff from opposing players, some would call him half-breed or niggger due to his large lips. When the name calling would start, Babe, during a home run trot would pause while running in front of the other teams dugout and yell, "How do you like them apples?"

1. Scott Rolen... Rolen when hitting a home run would immediately go into his look. Fierce determination on his face, legs moving faster than a trot but slower than a dash, arms pumping like machines. It was more like our military hitting a beach than a home run trot. A beautiful sight.

If there are more, I'd love to hear them.

The most heartfelt one came last year during a college softball game. A girl hit a home run with two girls on late, in a 0-0 game. This girl did not usually hit home runs and in her excitement of jumping up and down she tore ligaments in her knee. She hobbled a few steps but coldn't move. Teammates started going on the field to assist her, the umpires cleared them saying the play was still alive. College softball rules state that a person hitting a home run must touch all the bases without being assisted by teammates.

Two girls from the opposing team came over and picked her up and made sure she touched each base to collect her home run. Just great sportsmanship in a game that meant alot to both teams.

I wouldnt consider it a trot but i must admit that sammy sosa's jump out the batters box when he got a hold of one was pretty cool.

A selfish nod to Ryan Theriot's homerun trot simply because my Main Event team has gotten to see it three times this year. We're still waiting for David Ortiz and Geovany Soto trot around the bases!

Ruben Sierra had a ridiculous homerun trot during his first stint with the Yankees. It had to be the longest in terms of distance. He'd take such a circuitous route to first that his Roto owners had to be concerned that he'd sprain an ankle falling down the dugout steps!

As a Cub Fan, Rolen's trot is very familiar to me. He has hit 23 against the Cub's and more HR's in Wrigley than in any other park he has gone to as a visiting player.

You are right about him. He hits the ball, lays down the bat and proceeds around the bases in a professional manner that makes me only half hate him for beating my team.

Gotta add Kirk Gibson's 1988 WS walk-off HR trot. Bad wheels, stomach virus, facing Eckersly, dribbler down the line making him "sprint" towards first, constantly stepping out of the box walking nearly to the Oakland dugout, finally connects, wierd low hands/no follow through swing, hobbling around the bases, right arm pumping, Lasorda "rushing" out of the dugout and leaping in the air (1/2 inch).

Classic trot.

As far as one timers go, a lot of walkoffs come to mind. Joe Carter would probably stand out most.

Bobby Thompson and Mazeroski would stand out as well.

Bob Gibson once said that if he saw a players eyes during a home run trot, that he would be making a different trip the next at bat.

Gotta love Bob Gibson.

I'd like to see Joba hit a home run.

I don't think he'd be able to contain himself. :D

I'd like to see Joba get hit with a fastball right in his head that punk!

Sox pitching coach John Farrell on WEEI's Dale and Holley Show talking about possible retaliation: "Our guys for one have each others backs and they're certainly be supportive if a situation like that were to arise. Speaking specifically about last night, he [Chamberlain] strikes out 12 guys, doesn't seem to have too many command issues, and if there was a purpose or an intent to throw up and in, or even if the intent was further than that, to send a clear-cut message, you can disguise it a little bit more than making it very obvious with the first pitch in the middle of the back to Jason Bay. So, those things aren't forgotten, we know that there's a history there between the pitcher in New York and our guys here, so not to say that he was specifically out to do that, but I think history speaks for itself, and we've got a number of games left with these guys."

Kirk Gibson's 1988 WS walk-off HR trot.

The best of all time for a one homerun shot when it counted! Tell me if it didn't send chills down your spine. If you do you must be Geeko.

The way he was walking off the mound, taking off his glove and turning his back to the hitter after each strikeout seemed very distastful

[/QUOTE]Joba's got issues. DWI arraignment, mother just busted for felony meth possession. I'm amazed he made it out of the first inning.

Gotta love Bob Gibson. As a pitcher, I agree. As a pitching coach, what he did to the Brave's ought to be a felony. I hope the fleas from a heard of camels infest his armpits!
