There are only 11 pitchers in the majors that have a better K/9 AND BB/9 than Blanton. Their names...

J. Vazquez

Z. Greinke

F. Hernandez

D. Haren

E. Bedard

C. Hamels

Y. Gallardo

J. Johnson

R. Halladay

R. Nolasco

T. Lilly



The combined whip and era of the pitchers above is: 1.10 whip and 3.17 era



Blanton gets stuck with a 1.60 whip and 6.81 era.



I can only hope history proves to be a good guide...

He gave up two more homers today. Just sayin'. Compare the combined homerun rate of those guys. Going forward, I'll take him for away games and two starts where at least one is away. Never a one start week at home.

He throws flyballs and pitches in a sandbox. It DOESN'T MATTER what his K/9, BB/9 is when a good portion of his hits are getting clobbered (at home).

Over 20% of the hits he lets up at home are HR's!!!!



DO NOT start him again when he is at home (I don't care if he gets 3 starts in a week and two are on the road!!!!)



Listen, you have given me GREAT advice for seeking out late round pitchers, but you are off on this one. You gotta factor in the ballpark for this one.

Never a one start week at home. ya, the wind was blowing out AGAIN in philly. it's been awfully windy this april/early may on the east coast. even vazquez gave up 2 hr's.



blanton's hr rate has always been good in oakland. i expect it to regress to the mean over the course of the year. maybe not all the way, but A LOT CLOSER THAN IT IS NOW!!!

hr/9 is a secondary stat bill. trust me on that one. on top of that, blanton has NEVER been a HR pitcher in the majors. NEVER. he's no more a hr pitcher than johan santana.



i'm thinking blanton is getting very unlucky. sprinkle in history and "regression to the mean" and i am hopeful blanton's surface #'s turn around

"regression to the mean" is a phrase you'll learn to appreciate throughout your fantasy baseball career, i.e. do u think Quentin, Carlos will hit .233 this year (his current avg)? as lou would say, "patients my friend, patients"

I don't usually do this but I feel it extremely necessary after hearing all this banter.



The definition of whip is walks x HITS divided by innings pitched. The guys you mentioned that have better K/BB and BB/9 rations also happen to give up less than a hit per inning.



The reason why Blanton and Nolasco are struggling is their .330 and .319 BA against.

History tells us Blanton has a .273 BA against, is a high whip, high e.r.a. pitcher, a whopping 2/1 K/BB ratio and a weak 5.8 K/9 (history tells us not to expect his current K/9 to stick), .500 pitcher pitching in one of the best pitcher's parks in baseball. Not sure which stats you were looking at when drafting him. I can't seem to find anything.



But I'm sure you're right Gekko, he'll be MUCH better in Philly.

crazy - we've already determined you look at the wrong stats to analyze a pitcher. you don't need to keep brining yourself down man.
