Gamel, Mat (MIL)

Post by Gordon Gekko II » Fri May 15, 2009 4:11 am

Gamel is one of THE top hitters in the minors, and he just got called up. Think Braun from a few years ago. I don’t see him doing much the rest of this week, but he will get some serious playing time next week. We all know how it goes, if he is lights out next week, the Brewers will find a place for him to play. There aren’t too many 30+ hr guys in the FAAB pool. With that said, I’m wondering how much FAAB it will take to acquire him?

Serious inquiries only. Thanks.

Only Braun had legit power. Gamel doesn't project to be a 30 hr guy. And he can't field a lick. Makes Bill Hall look like Brooks Robinson.

Gamel's minor league numbers from this year and last year =

AB 648

Runs 124

2B 46

Hr 28

RBIs 130

SB 6

AVG .327

OBP .400

Obviously he's a young kid who is still growing. When I see 82 extra base hits in 648 at bats, that says power is legit and could sPiKe in a big way.

Braun's defense at 3B was pretty horrible his rookie year too. I don't think Gamel has Braun's upside but I think he has the chance to be very good. Where he'll play is the question. Hall has been solid at 3B so far, so there isn't a pressing need for Gamel yet. But I like the fact he was brought up. There's nothing left for him to prove in the minors and Brad Nelson was awful.

you need to remember that those stats i quoted are from a 22/23 year old.

Very impressive numbers for such a young hitter wouldn't you say.

his numbers this year alone are even better...20 extra base hits in only 119 at bats.

I agree. He's very talented. If the Brewers stay in the race, I'd like to see them use Gamel as trade bait to acquire a big-time starter - only this time one who isn't a rental but a guy under contract for a couple of years or so.

I'm sure he'll bang plenty of double and hit fairly well. I just don't see 30 hr power. Hitters parks where he has been. We'll see.

And yes, Braun was horrendous, but everything I hear is that Gamel is beyond that. Arguably the worst defensive player in the minors!!! Only so many spots to "hide" him.

They're bringing him up for the interleague because they'll have the DH spot available. There's nowhere else for him to play in Milwaulkee.....the corner outfield & corner infield positions are all taken by established starters and/or stars in Braun, Hart, Fielder, & Hall....

Even if there was one of those spots open, Gamel can't field at all....he is the epitomy of a DH.

His one hope of real playing time is if he dominates the interleague and the Brewers trade him for some pitching help. If this doesn't happen, expect him to be sent back down once interleague is over.

It's tough to fit a square block through a circle. The kid has talent but is only up for interleague play. There is no room for his bat in the lineup with Hall at 3B and the OF already full. I expect him to get a few at bats in then be sent back down to work on his defense or like everyone says showcase his offense during this interleague and then try to work out a trade later in the season.

When the DH list for draft day goes something like Ortiz, Thome, yuck, Hafner, yuck, yuck...there MUST be room somewhere in the AL for him.

While I'm semi-ranting...can we create a "hitters indifference" and disallow the strikeout of a pitcher who doesn't care so it doesn't count as a strikeout? ;) Watching Bush get Josh Johnson out twice with K's and noting Johnsons lack of effort was pathetic. Two easy K's on like 3 or 4 pitches each. (kidding here)

Brewers manager Ken Macha intends to play Matt Gamel as much as possible.

Macha spoke in Sunday's Boston Globe, saying that "He's one of our best prospects, 23 years old, so he's not going to sit on the bench. We're going to use him as a pinch hitter, at third, at DH when we start playing interleague. He's a lefthanded bat, so that's a nice thing for us because we're so righthanded."

Me thinks Mr. Gekko is trying to distract owners away from the player he really likes....

I think he's saying you're bragging him up to get someone else cheap....

Looks like Bill Hall is now in the game, as they shifted Counsell to second. No Gamel yet.....

Could you imagine if Hall(highley unlikely) took over for Weeks if he misses time and Gamel played 3rd? Whew, have fun with those Brewers pitchers.
