Chase Utley, Mike Lowell, Alex Rodriguez, Alex Gordon, and now Carlos Delgado. What is going on with all of these serious hip injuries? I've been a baseball fan for a long time and I've never experienced this many hip related injuries to star players in such a short time span in any season.
Does anyone have thoeries/explanations?
Steroids immediately come to mind. Was wondering if there are other reasonable explanations.

1) Do you recall that steroids commercial with the statue breaking down? That could be happening.
2) They are implanting a trickle release of undetectable PEDS deep into the hip/ass of players to soup them up!
3) They are implanting the chip to track the players wherever they go...trying to catch the HGH pushers!

My guess would be modernized training which is too targeted to enhance a particular baseball skill (such as hitting for power) ... replacing more generic and comprehensive training/flexibility programs back when trainers weren't armed with video analysis and advanced techniques.

[/QUOTE]KJ, I thought about this but why are we only seeing so many injuries THIS season? The game has always been a home run hitter game, even more so in the last 10-20 years. Did several MLB teams ditch their flexibility programs in the past year?
I suspect that either
A) Long time juicers are off it and their bodies/joints/tendons are breaking down just like the commercial (right on, lance

) or
B) Players are using new and more dangerous substances that are not yet detectable but also have increased risk of side effect/injury.

Carl Pavano is one. I forget the other few it happened to. I think Piazza had an injury there but it wasn't baseball related.

I wouldn't rule out either of the substance effect scenarios either.

I seem to remember Albert Belle retired due to a hip condition - and he is also suspected of being a "juicer" - difference is they didn't have the surgery back then -I'd say that any and all of these guys has at least the sniff of steroids on them.

Wasn't a hip injury the cause of Bo Jackson's demise?
What an exciting player....in both baseball & football....one of the most dynamic athletes I ever saw.

Will Carroll talked about that very issue on my show on Monday. Apparently part of the "outbreak" in hip injuries is a change in diagnosis, thanks to a new way MRI machines are constructed and were able to catch the injury. Previously, the torn labrums in the hip were often characterized as groin injuries.

Previously, the torn labrums in the hip were often characterized as groin injuries. This is fascinating information. My question being, how did anyone with a hip injury in the past ever recover if it was misdiagnosed and mistreated??? If this were the case, wouldn't all serious hip injuries be career ending assuming they were treated as groin injuries? If surgery is needed now, how did they get better then?
Also, when you post something like this, you HAVE to plug your show schedule!

Adding fuel to the fire...
Barry Bonds also had hip surgery.

I missed this, Dan. What's interesting about this is that Bonds had hip surgery recently, long after his regular baseball days of stress and strains. I was already leaning, but after being reminded of Albert Belle and Barry now I'm convinced. Too many examples including the two most prolific home run hitters who were proven guilty of juicing (Arod and Bonds).
Over the next 5, 10, 20 years it will be interesting to see how many of the best players of this era will have odd health issues. Odds are we won't hear about the vast majority of them, but we'll catch a few. Maybe McGwire is in hiding because he's melting!

LaTroy Hawkins was available out of the bullpen Tuesday after battling HIP soreness for much of the weekend.
