I've just heard a "report" mentioning "vertigo" as a possible explanation for Joey Votto's unexplained dizziness. Also, the name Nicholas Esasky surfaced.

Nicholas Esasky is a former Major League Baseball first baseman and third baseman. Esasky was forced to retire due to developing vertigo stemming from an ear infection.

Hopefully the reporters are just trying to create some controversy.

I'm a non votto owner and think it would be a tragedy if this kids career suffered due to this. he is a true talent and watching Votto & Bruce for the next few years with Phillips and that pitching staff sounds real exciting to a baseball fan.

Hopefully the reporters are just trying to create some controversy. I had this like 2 or 3 years ago and it was wicked in my case.

At first the symptoms were...when I turned my head fairly quickly...the room kind of kept moving when I stopped. (not unlike the "spinning" sensation of early year drinking. When that digital alarm clock won't stay in one place in your dark room, and keeps moving toward thew ceiling!) :D At first it was kind of fun...and I would play with it, turning my head quickly to see the room spin.

Within 3 hours it progressed to the point where I got goose bumps, and was sweating like crazy...turning my grey t-shirt all dark grey and dripping from face. I even checked my pulse to see what the hell was going on...but it was not elevated.

It then got so bad I had to lay down...and any shifting of my head would result in the urge to vomit. I eventually did just that, and was so screwed up, I couldn't walk to the car without using the walls for balance or somebody to lean on. My wife drove me to the hospital, and wheel-chaired me in and they IV'd me and gave me some anti-biotic I believe, and within two or three hours I felt better and left the hospital feeling fairly fine.

They said I had Virtigo from an inner ear infection.

It was pretty scary the way it came out of nowhere, and progressed so quickly.

Vertigo is usually associated with a problem in the inner ear balance mechanisms (vestibular system), in the syndrome and Meniere's disease.

Transient vertigo can be caused by inflammation of the inner ear due to the common cold, influenza, and bacterial infections. Vertigo can also occur after long flights or boat journeys where the mind gets used to turbulence, resulting in a person's feeling as if he or she is moving up and down. This usually subsides after a few days. Another source of vertigo is through exposure to high levels of sound pressure, rattling the inner ear and causing a loss of balance. Consumption of alcohol can also cause vertigo.

from a poster last night...

On Sports Squawk tonight, he was discussing how Nick Esasky's case is simialr to Votto's. Nick felt week and thought he had the flu. Then he started getting dizzy. It didn't stop. He played nine games the rest of that year and never played ball again. He had seen dozens and dozens of specialists over the years. No one could help him. To this day, he still experiences vertigo.

other scuttlebutt of the Curious Case of Joey Votto...

He should also be questioned about having an anxiety disorder. I just went through this and its definately hard to detect but dizziness, no focus, and light-headedness were very common.

we had a guy with like symptoms, meds did not help, 5 weeks, after the symptoms started, they found a cancerous brain tumor.

Please hear me out. I have chronic Lyme Disease and dizziness, light-headedness, and the heart racing like Votto had in Arizona ARE symptoms of Lyme Disease. I hope that someone sees this and Votto gets tested for it. He is experiencing exactly what I did just before my diagnosis

I once slipped on a roller skate, fell down a flight of stairs, banged my head on a stack of frozen vanilla custard, wandered into the street and was run over by a ’51 Hudson driven by Nick Lachey and afterward I experienced the same sort of dizziness as Votto so I hope they check him for that, too. (signed Walla)

I went through the same type of thing about 4 years ago and was misdiagnosed several times, mostly calling it Lyme disease or an anxioty disorder. Wound up being after affects of a serious adult case of Mononucleosis. Mono or similar virus in adults can have long-lasting affects. The only treatment is time. It took me well over a year to fully recover. It might not be Nick Esasky, but this case reminds me of Casey Kotchman in 2007. He missed an entire season with post-mono disorder….

I pay good money to get dizzy and lightheaded. I’ll have what he’s having. (signed Lance) :D

Vertigo,great movie.

Should it be re-named Vottigo?

To simulate symptoms, turn around fast three times or spend a Friday night with Lance.

Votto is NOT in the lineup tonight - he was supposed to be examined by a doctor in Cincinnati today, but I haven't seen any further word on that yet.

UPDATE (and it's not good)...

CINCINNATI -- For now, the reasons behind Reds first baseman Joey Votto's dizziness will continue to keep everyone in suspense.

Votto, who was out of the lineup again for Cincinnati's series opener against Philadelphia, saw more doctors Tuesday, but declined to discuss his condition . All that is known is he has more doctor visits on the docket.

"Joey has undergone a series of tests at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego and here in Cincinnati, and we have more tests scheduled over the next few days," Reds head trainer Mark Mann said in a statement released by the club. "After those additional tests, we will be more prepared to discuss the cause of his dizziness."

In other words, no one knows yet why Votto has been dizzy.

With the ten doctor visits McCann needed for his eyes...and now the 10 doctor visits needed for Votto's dizziness...can we jump to conclusions that even the best paid doctors have gotten fat and...

Also Joey Votto is continuing to undergo tests to figure out what is causing his dizziness. I think it is very likely he goes on the DL by the end of the week as they try an figure it out. At the same time, the Reds have been very slow at placing players on the DL this season and are tending to give them time before making the move. If they do make the move, look for Gomes to get the call up.

Here's hoping Votto gets well soon!

The Reds (and Votto) know what is going on, but want to get confirmation before making it public.

One would think “confirmation” is NOT needed if it was a short-term or minor issue.

On the other hand, one would think “confirmation” IS needed if it was a long-term or serious situation.

I’m wondering if he gets DL’d before Friday?

While Votto was a clear 3rd round talent in my book at the draft table, stuff like this just reminds people that there is some luck involved in doing well in a contest like this. In this case, bad luck, unfortunately. Too bad, because he was on his way to a breakout year this year.
