Top 10 list- GM for a Day

All of us have done it. Come up with trades that would make sense to us and wonder why teams do not have the same thoughts as ourselves.

Here is my top 10 on trades that would make sense for some clubs:

10. Brad Hawpe to the Yankees

The Rockies are looking to cut salary, Hawpe and Atkins may be gone before the deadline. Ugh, another outfielder for the Yankees, I know. But Hawpe fits the ballpark and has a sluggers mentality that will hit for avg. Cabrera, Damon, Gardner, Swisher, or Matsui will not be able to match his production and he'd give the Yankees something they're not used to, a good defensive outfielder with an arm.

9. Garrett Atkins to the White Sox

Atkins can flourish again. The White Sox have a hitters park and a need for a 3b. Although Beckham is taking reps in the minors at 3b, they would be doing both him and the organization a disservice to keep him there.

8. Matt Cain to the Brewers

Sort of like getting Jake Peavy-lite here. Cain would be a good addition to the Brewers staff without taking on Peavy's contract. Suppan, Looper, Parra, and Bush all exemplify the word, beatable.

7. Heath Bell to the Rays

Boy, the NL west sucks! All these nice players packaged up to teams that can actually win. The Rays closer problems could be over with this acquisition. The Padres would move Meredith into the role, while the Rays would be a lot more formidable against the Yankees and Red Sox with a real stopper.

6. Aubrey Huff to the Mets

The Mets need more utility, Huff would offer up power from a guy who can play both 1b and OF. With Wright hitting three home runs and Beltran in and out of the lineup, and Delgado gone, the Mets will be devoid of power as soon as Sheffield hits the dl which at his age, with his history, is a given. The Mets can't wait if they expect to be in the pennant race.

5. Chris Young to the White Sox

Right back where he started from. At least Ozzie has gotten away from the CF'er = leadoff hitter thought process. Young can go get them in center field and a change of scenery would probably do him a lot of good. The White Sox were patient with DeWayne Wise for crying out loud, Young could pay large dividends with a little patience.

4. Jake Peavy to the Mets

Peavy will go to a big money team with a pitchers ballpark. Sounds like the Mets to me. Omar Minaya is no stranger to pulling big deals to get pitchers and his last one of signing Oliver Perez has been a flop. Santana-Peavy would be a helluva one-two punch to get the Mets to the Post season and it would be hard to stop them once post-season began.

3. Erik Bedard to the Cubs

Lets face it, Lou Piniella has little faith in Sean Marshall. He says nice things about him, but he is the first to go to the bullpen when the pitching staff is re-aligned. Bedard would give them a dominating lefty to rent for the rest of the year. Jake Fox would look good in an American League uniform and everybody knows how the Mariners could use another good bat.

2. Dan Haren to the Angels

The Angels are going to have to admit to themselves that the pitchers they are getting back from injury are not the same as before they were injured. Although they are in a weak division and can probably win that division with a sub-par staff, in order to accomplish anything in the post-season, they will need a stopper. They have prospects galore that the D-Backs can use and the D-Backs ownership is looking to cut all costs. Haren has already proved his mettle in the A.L. west, this trade just makes too much sense.

1. Matt Holliday to the Red Sox

It looks more and more everyday that Holliday will be going somewhere before the deadline. The RedSox could use some punch, much in the way that Jason Bay provided for them last year. Holliday moves to right field, while JD Drew and David Ortiz fight for ab's at the dh spot. Billy Beane gets a couple of more pitching prospects, the Sox get the best "rent-a-player".

Pure speculation on my part and I know that you have a good trade idea yourself. Let us know your "GM for a day" ideas.

Solid list, DOUGHY!

I like 4 and 5 the most!

I'd love for the Mets to have a little punch in their rotation, and adding Peavy would change their entire image.

Opening up a OF spot for Byrnes would be cool! :D ;)

Not in any way related...but thought you'd like this, Uncle D!

I always equate Fonzie to Erkel.

Two over-exposed characters that became like a hit record that a radio station plays a thousand times.

My favorite tv character- Hoss Cartwright ......damn I'm old!

Pulling at the heartstrings, Bob.

Hop Sing was way before his time. He would be an icon at the Food Channel.

You did give me the idea for another top 10 list, I'll keep it on this thread, since the subject has been started.

Top 10 Servants on TV:

10. Fran Drescher in the Nanny

I despised this show. Almost as much as her laugh.

9. Tony Danza in Who's the Boss

The show that brought us THE baseball Annie, Alyssa Milano.

8. Mr. Belvedere

They had Uecker right, they had Belvedere right.... they just didn't have a group of writers that could think outside of the box.

7. Florida on Maude

Florida was probably the best character on Maude. Between her, and looking at Adrienne Barbeau's bosom ( Q, PICTURE PUHLEESE!)the show was worth watching. Florida went on to become JJ'S (DY-NO-MITE) and Janet Jackson's mom on Good Times

6. Hazel

Most of you probably don't remember her, but she would do anything for Mr. B....Good stuff

5. Alice on the Brady Bunch

Oh that wacky Alice.

4 Bub on My Three Sons

Probably just a shade better looking than Alice.

3.Pepino on the Real McCoys

Really dating myself here. Going back to black and white tv. Pepino was the farmhand that was always there for the McCoy clan.

2. Uncle Charley on My Three Sons

Bub's relative. He spiced up the show with his naval lingo. Brash but caring.

1. Hop Sing in Bonanza

Anytime he got camera time or lines on Bonanza, it was GOLD.

I just watched the very first Andy Griffith Show the other night with my 14-year-old and she was laughing at everything. That pilot ranks as one of my all-time shows (along with several M*A*S*H episodes), so to see someone from today's generation laughing at the same thing was pretty cool. Aunt Bee tries to do everything that Opie likes, but she doesn't even know how to hold onto a bat (she steps up to the plate holding the barrel of the bat). When she realizes that she can't replace Ruth, Opie's previous sitter, she decides to leave Andy and Opie, but Opie runs out in his pajamas and says, "She can't leave Pa. She can't do ANYTHING." Still makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Man, that Ronnie Howard was cute. Hard to believe that orange mop fell out by the time he was 35. :D

Okay, I'm done pimping for Aunt Bee, but she gets no love on Dan's list. :D

You're right, Greg. I obviously did not put enough time and effort into this list!

I must have gotten distracted with the thought of Adrienne Barbeau.

I remember that Andy Griffith, classic.

My favorite episode was MR. McBeevee.

Opie befriends a telephone line worker on the outskirts of town, he comes back to the Sherriffs office and describes him as a man who lives in trees, jingles when he walks, and has 12 extra hands (his toolbelt).

Andy and Barney laugh it off as a child's imagination. When Opie shows up the next day with a quarter that Mr. McBeevee gave him, they think that he may have stolen it and take him in the car to return it to the rightful owner. But Mr. McBeevee gets called to another telephone line and isn't there.

Barney wants Opie lit up for lying. Andy takes him home for a spanking, but before the spanking, Andy sees a sadness in Opie's eyes, not from the threat of a spanking, but because he doesen't believe him. Andy leaves his room without punishing Opie.

The next day Andy drives out to the telephone pole and is lost in thought. He shakes his head and exasperated, yells, "Mr. McBeevee!" Mr McBeevee bounds down the pole and Andy's look of relief is classic.

A definite laugh-cry episode, and one that every parent should watch with their kids.

A definite laugh-cry episode, and one that every parent should watch with their kids. I remember it well. He had an Irish accent and when Andy met him he couldn't shake his hand hard enough. He was so happy to know that his boy wasn't lying to him. A good lesson for parents who ever think about doubting their kids.

I've learned a lot about life and parenting through that show. Heck, it even helps me with my decisions in the NFBC. Andy was the coolest parent and friend on TV then and even now. He would do anything to protect ol' Barney.

By the way, in the first episode Barney refers to Andy as "Cousin Andy". Just a little tid-bit for trivia folks.

Your response should have been that Aunt Bee may as well be on your roster.

Benson from his SOAP days is an absolute classic -

"You want me to get that?"

Mrs.Garret - Different Strokes

Charles(Scott baio)- Charles in Charge

Nell Carter - Gimme a Break

Do a Google on the actress that played Aunt Bee. Her life story is pretty tragic after she left the Andy Griffith Show. Thanks for this thread Doughboys, it's been fun reliving these great old shows. But here's fact about The Andy Griffith Show: Once they went color and Don Knotts left, that show was HORRIBLE. That cop that replaced Barney had to be one of the worst replacements in television history.

Soap was a classic, in and of itself.

They just had the misfortune of being way ahead of their time.

My mother-in-law, God bless her soul....oh, she's not dead, SOMEONE just needs to bless her soul! Anyway, after seeing Soap she wouldn't talk to me for weeks (a blessing in disguise). I had told her to watch it and she thought it was disgusting. She asked her daughter how she could marry such a despicable man that liked such a despicable show. My wife responded, "You think THAT'S the most despicable thing about him!?"

35 years later, we're still married and I'm waiting for my mother-in-law to accept dvd's over video tapes. As soon as she does, she is getting Soap, season one, for a birthday present.
