Post by Tom Kessenich » Mon Jun 22, 2009 2:05 am

Congratulations to Kevin Schiller, whose Chicks Dig The Long Ball team in Las Vegas League 2 led the way in the NFBC last week with 3,174 points.

A monster week from Prince Fielder (.391-2-11) led the way offensively. Derek Lee (.364-4-9), David DeJesus (.292-2-7) and Adam Lind (.333-2-3) also had good weeks at the plate. Kevin Millwood and Kevin Correia combined for two wins and 28 strikeouts while Francisco Cordero had two saves to lead the pitching staff.

Congratulations again to Kevin and good luck to everyone in the NFBC this week.

Way to go, Kevin!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Thank you all for the kind comments.

Obviously I've had a very lucky run this season in baseball. Funny how I feel as though I know football well and essentially blew chunks last season in all of the high stakes football events in which I participated. Then this season in baseball, only my second, I'm having results that should really only be coming from those who truly know baseball.

Baseball to me involves more skill than football which makes this start that much more surprising. I've had to study the heck out of everything happening in baseball on a daily basis to try keep up, but still am smart enough to understand I lack the knowledge of Childs, Thomas, Van Hook, Gekko, etc. Hopefully I can continue to buck the odds and rely on more luck than skill but at some point that will catch up with me.

I moved from the Los Angeles area to Phoenix two weeks ago so more exposure to baseball come this Fall will hopefully speed up the learning curve even more. And as for football, I'm staying away from diving into that as long as I can because this baseball thing requires 100% focus.

Working the free-agent wire is critical for fantasy owners hoping to cash in big in the NFBC each year. One move last week helped propel Kevin Schiller in a big way.

Thanks to a pair of quality starts from Kevin Correia, Schiller’s Chicks Dig The Long Ball team in Las Vegas League 2 led the way in the NFBC last week with 3,174 points.

A monster week from Prince Fielder (.391-2-11) led the way offensively. Derek Lee (.364-4-9), David DeJesus (.292-2-7) and Adam Lind (.333-2-3) also had good weeks at the plate. Correia and Kevin Millwood combined for two wins and 28 strikeouts while Francisco Cordero had two saves to lead the pitching staff.

In Schiller’s opinion, picking up Correia was the key move of the week.

“Getting Kevin Correia for $6 and getting two quality starts from him this past week helped bolster my weekly stats,” he said. “I had one my biggest home run weeks of the year led by Derrek Lee and also a solid stolen base week thanks to Brian Roberts and Shin Soo-Choo.”

Schiller said he targeted offense early in his draft in Vegas, hoping to find pitching values later as the draft went on.

“My draft went well with the exception of drafting Hanley Ramirez ahead of Albert Pujols, something I debated for weeks leading into the draft, and also selecting Jason Motte with the expectation he would be collecting saves for me,” he said. “Had I made a different choice with either of those selections I'd be in first place overall instead of second.”

The 39-yeaer-old Schiller is the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. He is single and enjoys tennis and exercise “whenever possible.”
