David Shovein Is Week 20 NFBC Winner
The baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. Stop me if you’ve heard that before. Well David Shovein is here to tell you those words are quite prophetic.
His team in the NFBC is proof of that.
After a slow start to the season, Shovein’s Big Bucks, No Whammies team in Chicago League 3 has heated up of late and last week no team in our event was better as it led the way in the NFBC last week with 3,517 points.
David Ortiz (.400-3-10), Luis Castillo (.538, 2 SBs), Victor Martinez (.409-2-5) and Lyle Overbay (.316) led the way offensively. Chris Carpenter and Ubaldo Jimenez combined for four wins and 28 strikeouts while J.P. Howell, Bobby Jenks and Rafael Soriano combined for nine saves to lead the pitching.
“It's a great honor for us to finish on top for the week, especially after coming so close and finishing fourth overall the previous week,” Shovein said. “This first year has been an adventure for my teammate Dan Wydick and myself. We've been sitting seventh or lower in our league until this run the past couple of weeks has propelled us up to third.
“
As for this week, obviously everything went well. We only had nine starts for the week, and aside from Brian Bannister losing twice, every starter that we threw won his game. Chris Carpenter and Ubaldo Jimenez each had two stellar outings combining for four wins and 28 K's. Each of our three closers got three saves for the week, and our ratios were outstanding. David Ortiz showing signs of life has been big for us, and he carried the offense hitting .400/4/10. Victor Martinez, Luis Castillo and Clint Barmes also went above and beyond to help us finish on top.
“The one move that we regret was playing Colby Rasmus over Hideki Matsui. On Monday, a news report came out that the Yanks were sitting Matsui down due to swelling in his knee. We thought this would keep him out at least a couple of games, instead of just Monday. He ended up hitting four home runs and driving in 10 for the week.”
Shovein said the plan on Draft Day was to focus on offense early and build a solid base of power and speed.
“Some of those picks, like Rollins and Ortiz, have struggled greatly, but Crawford, Bay and Victor Martinez have carried the offense. We drafted three closers, thinking that would put us in the upper half of the league in saves. However, Joey Devine got hurt before the season started, and Troy Percival went down early on, leaving us with only Bobby Jenks.
“Luckily for us, Rafael Soriano took over the role in Atlanta, and we were able to acquire JP Howell and Rafael Soriano through FAAB. Picking up Delmon Young and Lastings Milledge as free agents has also been a huge help.”
David and Dan are both 25 years old and live in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. David is engaged and works as Chiropractic Assistant. Dan is single and works as a professional poker player.
