Lindy Hinkelman Sets NFBC Record With $241,300 Payday
This subject deserves its own thread for what it means to every serious fantasy baseball player in the country. If you put your mind to it, ANYTHING is possible.
Lindy Hinkelman has competed in the NFBC since 2005 and through four seasons hadn't won a league title, although he was consistently close. He finished 139th overall in 2005, 86th overall with a third place league finish ($750) in 2006, 52nd overall and a second place league finish ($2,500) in 2007 and 83rd overall in 2008. He also finished second in the NL Auction League a few years back ($1,900) and had teamed up with Ken Magner for a second place finish in the Ultimate Auction League.
But nothing prepared him for what was ahead in 2009. Lindy again signed up for the NFBC Tripleheader in Las Vegas: The main event, the $1300 NL Auction League and the Ultimate Auction League. He also grabbed two NFBC Online Championship teams. A total of $8,300 was spent on entry fees.
The end result? An NFBC record $241,300 in prizes!!!
Here's how the math works:
NFBC Overall Championship = $100,000
NFBC Las Vegas League 8 title = $5,000
NFBC Online Overall Championship = $40,000
NFBC Online League title = $1,300
Combined Standings Prize = $5,000
Bonus Prize for winning both overalls = $75,000
2nd Place NFBC Ultimate Auctioin League = $15,000
4th Place $1300 NL Auction League = $0
It was an incredible run for Lindy, one that we may never see again in the NFBC. Here are his league totals from his winning teams:
LV 8 = 139.5 points (93% of available points)
Online = 113.5 points (94.6%)
Ultimate Auction = 113.5 points (75.7%)
NL Auction = 91 points (60.7%)
He was right there on all of them. Amazing.
Congrats Lindy and we'll find a way to get the Brinks truck to Greencreek, Idaho. And just as importantly, we'll find a way to get you a big check with this total on it and get your pretty mug on the next issue of Fantasy Sports Magazine. You're going to like the cover we have designed for you and all of our NFBC followers. It's going to be special, just like this past year was for you.
Congrats Lindy. Like I said at the top, a season like this with a grand prize total like this just had to be on a thread of its own. It proves that any of us is capable of a season like this and something we can all strive for. Congrats.

Great Job Lindy! Its awesome to think about winning all of that money! It will be fun watching you hold your head high at all of next years drafts. I'll have to refer to you as "CHAMP" just like I do to Mr. Terry Haney.

Congratulations, Lindy. I mean ... HOLY MOTHER OF ... you DOMINATED this year. Unbelieveable accomplishment, one to be very proud of. Like Greg said, it may never happen again. Enjoy the winnings and good luck next in 2010.

I watched the Overall contest up close all season long as LV 5 league mates Win Murray and Ray Murphy sat on the throne for some 20 odd weeks. (Like I said on our boards gentleman it was one hell of a performance and I salute both of you.) As Lindy starting creeping up on them I thought to myself that 'this is the last guy I'd want chasing me at the end of the season'! You see, I fell victim to 'Mr. Enzyte' with two days to play in my first year in the NFBC and in the intervening years I've watched him often create something out of what appeared to be nothing in September. Mind you, he hasn't been successful every time, after all in the end we're all hostages to our rosters performance, but the end game skills were readily apparent to those who watched him and as a friend I did. It will sound a little redundant to Lindy because I told him long ago that he was one of the best end game players that I've played against and observed. Be that as it may, now everyone else knows too. Skill? Luck? I'll just say that when lady luck smiles on the skilled player it's really amazing how many zeroes one can put on a deposit slip! You did a hell of a job my friend, congratulations on your dream season!
This post however would not be complete without a tip of my cap to the Online runner-up Kenny Magner who's monster all around year has gotten a little lost in all of Lindy's (well deserved) hoopla. I know it's not 40 grand, but your performance this year deserves at least 40 prostrate Garth and Wayne "we're not worthies." (I know, I know, you'd rather have the 40 large.) Great job my friend, you're a warrior. Boys, next year at breakfast you two can do all the talking and I'll do the listening, not to mention the paying. As a warning to all, be extremely careful who you make side bets with! "What a world, what a world......................"

Lindy Hinkelman, Has done what no other expert has done. Win Over $200.000 in public leagues.
I would call him a Pro fantasy baseball player.
The old guard of tout wars and labr are quickly fading away. A new group of young players will want to know who did Lindy pick or who did Shawn pick. How about Rick Thomas who'd he pick.
Lets call the tout wars and labr drafts the senior
tour and the players of the NFBC the Pro tour.
I still get to play because it's a Pro/Am.

I'm experiencing so many emotions here that I don't know where to start. I guess I'll begin with the head honcho, Greg Ambrosius. Without his vision of high stakes fantasy baseball, none of this would have happened. And in the year in which I had the so called "roto karma", he debuted his on line version. Talk about timing.
The phone calls and e-mails were overwhelming, the posts of congratulations from all of the contestants here are so heart warming. Thanks to the old CDM crew for the cheer leading they did. That group is a really close knit group and I'm proud to be a part of it.
When one is battling teams for the overall title, you get to know their teams about as well as your own. Win and Ray just had a fantastic team. When I made a charge in July they were sitting at 3500 plus points. I didn't think there was a chance for me. They just had problems with wins. Two instances late in the year when Verlander and Niemann hooked up against each other in back to back starts went my way.
I haven't met Kevin Schiller, but from what I have heard, he's a football guy and is in his second year in baseball. He had just an amazing team, maximizing points in eight categories. To finish with around 3400 points while getting less than 100 in saves will tell you how loaded he was. One more closer for him and he is writing this. Great job, Kevin.
Then there is Shawn Childs. What a guy. He came to my aid in Vegas during the Ultimate Auction, doing the reserve rounds for me because I had to catch a plane. Gabe, my son who helped me out, wants to be like you when he grows up. Your pitching staff was off the charts. You are the king of these games. There was a post made when you made your run at me in August, saying he'd hate to be in my shoes with Childs chasing me. I liked you chasing me because I knew it would be a fantastic year if I'm ahead of you. Thanks for the phone call when I first led the main and the one last Sunday night.
The guy that I have the most respect for in these games is Ken Magner. He is the sole reason for the position where I'm at now. We talk so much about strategy and really mainly just about baseball. We helped each other during our on line drafts. I guess that worked out pretty well. He led that event for most of the year. He was the first person to call me with congratulations. Thanks, Ken.
There is a couple of other guys that I want to single out. The first one is Bob Mazur, the Spartacus cat. We first did battle a couple of years ago and I managed to edge him out for 3rd in league. Since then, we have become good friends. We have a bet that whoever has the most top 40 overall weekly finishes wins a free breakfast the morning of the Main Event. You're buying come March. Bob had a sub par showing this year, but good players that suffer through a bad year come roaring back. I wouldn't want to be in his league next year. Thanks for your phone calls and e-mails, Bob. The second person is Lance Turbes. I had never met Lance before. I drafted next to him this year. I have never had so much fun drafting. What a great guy. Thanks for all the posts on our league board, even if Walla Walla complained a bit. Oh, and thanks for passing on Albert.
I'm not going into the constructions of my teams here. I will finish by liking my season to the AM-PM commercial where there are two guys house sitting for a weekend. The guy they're sitting for said his cousin Alex would be there. Well, Alex turns out to be one hell of a babe, only surpassed by the pool gal and the nicely decorated gardener. In my mind the commercial keeps going and I know I'm giving away my age here, but the cook is Jamie Lee Curtis and the cleaning lady is Marilu Henner. That's how my season went.

Lindy,
An amazing season. Congrats again.
Everyone that has not decided who to root for in the playoffs jump on the Dodgers....yes, that is Lindy's favorite team and it would cap off his season.

Congrats to all of this season's winners and to Lindy in particular. Not only is he a top-notch player, but he's a Rocky Mountain resident to boot.
Now that 6 NFBC seasons of data points have been amassed, it's pretty hard to refute the notion that there are a few elite players who are simply a cut above the rest of us. Certainly, Shawn comes to mind, but anyone who has snagged multiple NFBC league titles or consistently lands in the top 40 overall should be applauded.
One suggestion I have for a future NFBC season would be to hold a "League of Champions" contest. Take the top 15 finishers from the previous season and put them into one league. This league could be the marquis attraction held on Saturday night and perhaps even filmed for television or internet broadcast.
