Howdy folks. Right now I’m a bit under the weather, and there’s only so much TV I can watch, so I figured I’d write an NFBC wrap up.
I was in 8 leagues this year (6 faab and 2 slow drafts). Beginning in June, my wife and I started experiencing some difficulties when it came to our pregnancy (original due date of August 15th). This included twice a week visits to the drs and two separate hospital stays (where they said the baby might have to be delivered if the “tests” said so). Created an atmosphere of total chaos in our lives. I told Greg this, but the time I put into baseball went from about 30 hours a week down to less than 5. I felt extremely frustrated as I know I could have done better this year, but I didn’t have the time to make it happen. Kind of a powerless situation to say the least.
Anyways, we delivered on July 21st. Since then we’ve been waking up every 2-3 hours for night time feedings!#@$#@!$! My wife tries to handle during the week and I handle on the weekend. With all of that said, I am the happiest Dad in the world.
Enough about me. Here’s how my teams did:
February Slow drafts: I wanted to get an actual draft or two under my belt before the NFBC main event. I decided to sign up for two $125 slow drafts in February. I like the slow drafts as they scratched the off-season itch I had. However, there is a lot of guess work to be done in February. And when a couple people take the majority of the 12 hour clock, it really frustrates owners. I finished 2nd and 4th. I’ll probably sign up for one next February (under a fake name of course).
On-line Championship teams: I haven’t played in 12 team leagues since, heck, I don’t know when. Maybe 8 years ago. I decided to get the three pack and try and pull a “Lindy”. Each of my teams looked like a SuperPower team after the draft. Unfortunately, A LOT of teams look like a SuperPower in a 12 team format. Obviously, the free agent pools between a 12 team and a 15 team league are vastly different. Damn good free agents were available EVERY week on the 12 team waiver wire. I constantly found myself needing to spend a lot more time researching FAAB due to the differences. For the most part during the final two months of the season, I stopped researching FAAB in these leagues and just looked at the top guys who showed up on the STAT pages. Anyways, I finished 1st, 4th, and 5th. I’ll probably pass on these leagues next year (unless the combined prize is too great for me to bypass).
Main Event: My starting pitchers pitched 1,398 innings. 406 of those innings (29%) were from free agent pickups. Out of those 406 innings, the results were: 19 wins, 33 losses, 5.59 ERA, and a 1.61WHIP!!!! Totally unacceptable. It’s no wonder I came in third in my league…29% of my starting pitcher stats were a 5.59 ERA, and a 1.61WHIP!!!! Who could win a league with that kind of production?
Other things that didn’t help…
Injuries to T.Hunter, A.Jones, J.Zimmerman
Early season demotions to L.Milledge, E.Dukes, and C.Gomez (PT demotion)
Summer trade of J.Thome
Total ineffectiveness of Chris Iannetta and John Smoltz
Sunday Super: Well, I did better than last year. Finished 5th this year. Tough competition. Wish I had more time to invest. 30-60 minutes a week just wasn’t enough to get it done against these sharks.
NY Mixed Auction: From April – July, only spent about 30-60 minutes a week. When I saw I had a better chance at winning significant money in this league than my main event, I bumped this one up to 120-180 minutes a week and moved my main event down to 30-60 min. Finished 1st here. It’s always a good feeling getting the players you want. The auction format makes that a reality (more so than a draft).
Total: 8 leagues – finishes of 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th, 5th
All in all, it was a fun year, but my personal enjoyment factor went out the window beginning in June. Also, it really sucked giving up the weekly BlogTalkRadio show. Maybe if my time frees up, we could look at getting that going again next year. It’s always my hope this time of year to limit the # of leagues I’m in next year. Right now, I’ll say I’m in no more than 4 weekly manage leagues. That # could change depending on how the main event is set up or if there is finally an overall auction championship. Have a good off-season everyone.
