Over the past six seasons, the NFBC has unveiled a national championship for our main event draft league, awarding $100,000 to six different champions. Last year we also unveiled the NFBC Online Championship and awarded a $40,000 grand prize to a national champion. We are becoming the place to be for national champions in the draft format.



So what's the next obvious step? Duh.



Yes, to award the industry's first national auction championship. In 2010, we will unveil the debut NFBC Auction Championship, a mixed league format with a $15,000 grand prize. Cost of entry per team will be $800 and we'll award three league prizes and 10 overall prizes. The prize structure is based on 10 leagues among our three host cities over two weekends and if we go above 10 leagues (150 teams) we'll adjust the overall prize pool accordingly.



The rules will be the same as our current NFBC Mixed Auction Leagues: $260 to acquire your 23 starters, a 7-man serpentine reserve draft, 5x5, with overall standings to be held for all 10 leagues with each category weighted equally.



The league prizes are as follows:

First Place = $3,500

Second Place = $2,000

Third Place = $800



Overall Prizes Are GUARANTEED and Include:

1st = $15,000

2nd = $3,750

3rd = $2,000

4th = $1,500

5th = $1,000

6th = $800

7th = $800

8th = $800

9th = $800

10th = $800



We are going to provide several time slots over the two weekends to allow folks to compete in this event and the other draft events we have planned. Here's a look at some of the early options, although times haven't been finalized yet:



Friday, March 19th, Flamingo Las Vegas:

9 a.m. $800 NFBC Auction Championship

4 p.m. $800 Mixed Auction Championship

(we may host one mid-afternoon on the East Coast)



Sunday, March 21st, Flamingo Las Vegas:

10 a.m. $800 NFBC Auction Championship



Friday, March 26th, Las Vegas:

9 a.m. $800 NFBC Auction Championship

4 p.m. $800 Mixed Auction Championship

(Chicago would host one early afternoon and likely the same in NYC unless demand warrants a morning auction as well)



Sunday, March 28th, Las Vegas:

10 a.m. $800 NFBC Auction Championship

(auctions in NYC if demand warrants it)



Last season we had six mixed auction leagues on one weekend among the three cities. We believe the addition of the overall grand prize will help us reach our goals and allow us to build on the national championship concept. We want to reward NATIONAL CHAMPIONS in the NFBC. This is the first step in that process in baseball and football and the other sports. Are you with us on this?

I know some auctions have done this in the past, is it better to bid on players for all 30 rounds?



I haven't done a lot of mixed auctions in the past, but I've done a few. I never liked that the first couple of draft slots were able to grab the quality players that slip through because some owners don't have the money to buy them. Therefore better players tend to be available in beginning of the reserve rounds of the mixed auctions.



If everyone had $7 more dollars, the whole team would need to be bought. I still think every team needs to have a full roster after 23 rounds.

The key is making sure your 23 starters are bought with the first $260. With online auctions we just did $267 for all 30 players, but then you're not buying your 23 starters with the first $260.



We can use KDS for auction leagues if that helps or figure out something for the 7 reserve spots. I'm open to suggestions.

I'm sure the next question on this thread is whether we will run AL-only and NL-only auction leagues in 2010. It's a good question and one with different answers.



Trust me, if we could get enough leagues to run a national AL-only and national NL-only auction championships we'd do it. Unfortunately, I've seen less and less interest in those formats in recent years, especially in Chicago and New York. We haven't had an AL-only auction league in New York the past two years and in fact we didn't even come close these past two years. And the idea of just running $650 private leagues in those formats is less appealing as we try to build this national championship format.



That being said, the $1300 AL-only and $1300 NL-only auction leagues in Las Vegas are special and those two leagues are usually the first to fill up as we get many of the same cast of characters back each year. I did not put those two auctions on the schedule yet because I want to hear from those participants to see what weekend works best for them. If most of the gang is going to come out the first weekend for this, then we'll host the $1300 NL Auction League at 9 am like we've always done and the $1300 NL Auction League at 4 pm like we've always done. If you want to do it the second weekend, I'm fine with that. But let's figure that out.



We don't want to take away from our NFBC Auction Championship, however, so that's why this is tentative for now. We obviously want to give those owners a shot at the Auction Championship prize pool too, which is why we are offering different times for those Auction Championships. It's one way to get more folks involved in this and we want to sell this debut auction event out if we're going to continue to build on this format.



So Shawn or Todd or someone else can get a temperature on those $1300 auction league owners and we'll plan accordingly. Sound good?

Sorry if I missed this reference earlier, but with due respect to Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School, someone who wins the Main, the On-Line and the auction will have successfully completed the "Triple Lindy."

Is there not an advantage to do the main event the later week as you have more injury news and other news? I thought the main event is done at the same time in all locations for that reason. Comments?

The player pool is the same.



If less is known, less it known by all. There is no advantage to one or the other at different dates. If there is more risk to drafting earlier and with less information, the flipside is that there also is more opportunity to drafting earlier and with less information.

We discussed the concept of cutting back but we all felt that paying out more spots was important.



We want people to receive something for a great year.



If you finish in the Top 10 in this (overall) - you deserve something and that's what we put together.



I understand the desire to pay more to Top 5 -- and we can do that by surpassing the entry threshold.



I'm really excited about this one and hope we can expand it one day to AL / NL & MIXED Auction Championships.

ryan - i think this logic is backwards. the top 5 overall should receive more, and if you get over 150 people, THEN the overall payouts should be extended to 6-10.



again, the 390 team nfbc main event pays out 11 spots.



the 600 team nfbc online championship pays out the top 10 spots.



the 294 team nffc classic main event pays out 8 spots.



the 276 team nffc primetime main event pays out 6 spots.



this 150 team auction championship seems out of whack. let's reward the real teams (1-5 overall) and get rid of the welfare line. please reconsider. thanks.
