Introducing 2010 NFBC Double Play

Last year our debut NFBC Online Championship was a GRAND SLAM for all of us. We were happily shocked and amazed that we blew out our numbers as we planned for 300 Online Championship teams with a $20,000 grand prize and finished with 600 teams and a $40,000 grand prize. Not only that, but Lindy Hinkelman won our $75,000 cash bonus for winning the NFBC main event and the NFBC Online Championship as he went on to win an industry record $241,300. Wow, what a season for Lindy and what a debut season for the NFBC Online Championship.

So how do you top that?? Well, you find a way to give away even more prize money. And we're going to do it with the debut NFBC Double Play.

Here are the two components to the NFBC Double Play:

1. We will again have the NFBC Online Championship and this year the grand prize has been increased to a GUARANTEED $60,000. We are budgeting just a slight increase for the Online Championship from 600 teams to 720 teams, but the next component allows us to increase the overall prize pool even more. Cost of entry for this contest remains at $350 per team with league prizes the same as last year at $1300 for first place and $650 for second.

2. The second component of the Double Play is a Live version that will take place both weekends of the NFBC live events and in each of the locations. Cost of entry will be $500 per team and league prizes will be $2,000 for first and $750 for second. There will be a GUARANTEED $25,000 grand prize only for the Live events players and those players will still be eligible for the $60,000 Overall grand prize. The additional $150 per team is supplying the revenue for the Live Overall prize. The goal of the Live version of the Double Play is 300 teams, for a total of 1,020 teams for the Double Play.

For anyone who plays the Live portion of the Double Play, there is a chance to win an $85,000 grand prize based on one $500 entry fee. For folks playing the Online portion only of the Double Play, you can win $60,000 with a $350 entry. We will have multiple draft days for the Live and the Online versions, so participants may own multiple teams if they'd like.

All of these, of course, are 12-team formats. There will again be an insurance policy to guarantee a prize for anyone who can win both the NFBC main event and the NFBC Online Championship, but we don't have the cash amount yet for that until we talk to our insurance company, which probably isn't too happy with us after Lindy beat all odds. :D But we'll announce that soon. And we again have a $5,000 Combined Standings prize between the NFBC main event and the Overall NFBC Online Championship (Live and Online).

Let's first look at the prize pool for the NFBC Double Play:

NFBC Double Play:

Online Overall Prizes:

1st Place = $60,000

2nd Place = $12,500

3rd Place = $5,000

4th Place = $3,500

5th Place = $2,000

6th Place = $1,000

7th Place = $750

8th Place = $500

9th Place = $500

10th Place = $350

League Prizes:

1st Place = $1,300

2nd Place = $650

NFBC Double Play

Live Overall Prizes:

1st Place = $25,000

2nd Place = $5,000

3rd Place = $2,500

4th Place = $1,000

5th Place = $500

NFBC Double Play

Live League Prizes:

1st Place = $2,000

2nd Place = $750

Combined Standings (NFBC Online & NFBC Main Event):

$5,000

$2,000

$1,250

$750

$500

So the goal of the Double Play plan was to grow the NFBC Online Championship prize pool but without just adding more online draft dates and times. We had 50 drafts in 8 days last year and I think we all know we could have had even more than that. We could have scheduled 60+ draft times in 8 days or added earlier dates to reach our goals, but we also wanted a mid-price range for folks who want to DRAFT LIVE. So we combined the two and now we have two special events in one.

I do not have a set schedule of draft dates for the Online version, but you can count on the eight days before Opening Day (March 28th-April 4th) to hold the bulk of the scheduled drafts. But we will also schedule some earlier draft dates in March to allow folks to compete in the Online Championship beyond that 8-day period. Stay tuned for details.

So here is a look at the tentative NFBC Schedule in Las Vegas:

Thursday, March 18th:

Private NCAA Viewing Party for NFBC members (tentative)

Sunday, March 21st:

10 am: Ultimate or Diamond League Draft

10 am: Super League Draft

10 am: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

10 am: NFBC Auction Championship ($800)

2 pm: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

Friday, March 26th:

9 am: NFBC Auction Championship ($800)

9 am: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

9 am: $1300 NL Auction League (or on the 19th)

1 pm: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

10 am: Ultimate or Diamond League Draft or both

10 am: Ultimate Auction League

10 am: Super League Draft

10 am: NFBC Auction Championship ($800)

10 am: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

2 pm: NFBC Double Play Drafts ($500)

We have to work on the times for New York and Chicago, but you get the idea. We are offering a lot of options to play the NFBC Live Double Play, even hosting it at the same time as the main event on Saturday, March 20th because we know we have the entire Sunset Ballroom and some folks may just want the $500 option rather than the main event. We have space and can accommodate all wants and needs that weekend.

Again, a lot of this is being finalized as we finish contracts with each hotel, but this at least gives you a clearer insight to our vision. We are stuffing A LOT into both weekends, but that's why we needed six draft days instead of three!! :D You asked for more and we're giving it to you.

NFBC Double Play. It could be worth $88,300 (counting league titles) plus a shot at the Combined Standings $5,000 prize and the $75,000 cash bonus. Wow. Good luck all and feel free to post your thoughts on this thread. Thanks.

greg - this is starting to feel like the WSOP with all these events.

however, all of these offerings require weekly management/FAAB which will likely limit most people. any thoughts on a LIVE Draft Champions Overall format?

I love this idea.

Very innovative and anything that adds to the live event is a major plus in my mind.

Looks like a great lineup, and I like the tiered combo/price strategy - reminds me of the FFOC. :D

What I don't like is that all of the excitement is around 12-teamer lges which I discovered last season I really don't like. Anything new for the 14-team players?

Are the auctions 14 team lges?

I totally understand and appreciate the role of the Draft Champions format without any in-season management. I'd like to create something like this, but would really need to do some work on a spreadsheet. Right now we are guaranteeing so many prizes that we are really out there. To create an NFBC Draft Champions Championship, we'd need to determine the overall prize pool and guarantee it.

Maybe we keep it low and expand the prize pool to make it happen. Time is also tough because we are now in two locations for 11 or so days and thus running these too close to the events makes it tough. If we could figure this all out and price point, anything is possible. But we're out there already with a lot!!! :D

But again, I understand the concept and a 15-team format, 45-round DC contest would get good response. If folks agree to earlier drafts, maybe we could consider.

Sound reasonable?

Are the auctions 14 team lges? I understand the sentiment towards the 12-team format and I knew that some of our die-hards wouldn't enjoy this as much, but it was very popular with folks last year and we already have a full slate of 15-team contests. There are plenty of $250, $500 and $1,000 NFBC 15-team satellite leagues available with 80% payouts.

The NFBC Auction Championship is a 15-team format. You're in football mode now, and rightfully so with such a good start!! Good job in foots.

Ah yeah, I meant 15 teams not 14 team!

Well at least I'll have the auctions - maybe I'll buy two of those if it's ok with Lance.

Bad News

The Double play does not interest me a bit. I simply cannot go back to 12 teamers.

Good news

There is plenty there already I like that will bring me out.

Greg/Tom if your goal is to have something for everyone which I know it is then what I just wrote should be great news to you.

The contract is in our hands and they came through for us today. Ryan is going over everything now. Maybe you folks will like Ryan a little more when you see that announcement. He worked his magic on this one for us. ;)

Why not schedule a couple of these drafts during the week between the two big weekends to keep those staying the full week busy?

......not that there isn't already in Vegas to keep someone plenty busy.

Greg/Tom if your goal is to have something for everyone which I know it is then what I just wrote should be great news to you. Yes, as I stated on Saturday when everyone was howling, that is our goal. Not EVERY event we offer will appeal to EVERYONE, but there are enough offerings on enough different days and in enough different ways (online or live or both) to satisfy any fantasy baseball junkie. We've said it before, we don't want to give you any reason to go anywhere else, and that includes with the salary cap formats (CDM is the place to be).

If anyone just wants to come to March Madness to play our $500 live Double Play for a chance to win $85,000, that's there for them. That's why we never concentrated on the multiple entries for the main event because we were so concentrated on the additions of the Double Play and the NFBC Auction Championship. We feel some folks will come to Las Vegas or our East Coast venue for March Madness, the new events and maybe just the main event if they can't attend on the 27th. The focus on the multiple teams kind of caught us off guard.

But now you have most of the plan. Next is how we're going to pull this off and where we're going to do it. Early-bird specials and more are coming soon, hopefully.

Ryan and Charlie are flying here tomorrow for meetings with Tom and me. It's snowing here now, which should be a real treat for these guys!! :D Tomorrow night we break bread together in Iola and DRINK HEAVILY!!! :D

Glenn It's certainly possible. Right now, anything is possible. We have space at the new hotel and the Flamingo to host live drafts at anytime. Heck, we may have a deal for Tout Wars to come and join us too for either weekend!! :D Tell the boys, Todd, but wait until we announce our host hotel and our other major industry announcement. ;) We are working our tails off on several fronts.

When do we hear about this East Coast venue? It's not casa de Zola, is it?
