Introducing 2010 NFBC Double Play
Posted: Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:19 am
Last year our debut NFBC Online Championship was a GRAND SLAM for all of us. We were happily shocked and amazed that we blew out our numbers as we planned for 300 Online Championship teams with a $20,000 grand prize and finished with 600 teams and a $40,000 grand prize. Not only that, but Lindy Hinkelman won our $75,000 cash bonus for winning the NFBC main event and the NFBC Online Championship as he went on to win an industry record $241,300. Wow, what a season for Lindy and what a debut season for the NFBC Online Championship.
So how do you top that?? Well, you find a way to give away even more prize money. And we're going to do it with the debut NFBC Double Play.
Here are the two components to the NFBC Double Play:
1. We will again have the NFBC Online Championship and this year the grand prize has been increased to a GUARANTEED $60,000. We are budgeting just a slight increase for the Online Championship from 600 teams to 720 teams, but the next component allows us to increase the overall prize pool even more. Cost of entry for this contest remains at $350 per team with league prizes the same as last year at $1300 for first place and $650 for second.
2. The second component of the Double Play is a Live version that will take place both weekends of the NFBC live events and in each of the locations. Cost of entry will be $500 per team and league prizes will be $2,000 for first and $750 for second. There will be a GUARANTEED $25,000 grand prize only for the Live events players and those players will still be eligible for the $60,000 Overall grand prize. The additional $150 per team is supplying the revenue for the Live Overall prize. The goal of the Live version of the Double Play is 300 teams, for a total of 1,020 teams for the Double Play.
For anyone who plays the Live portion of the Double Play, there is a chance to win an $85,000 grand prize based on one $500 entry fee. For folks playing the Online portion only of the Double Play, you can win $60,000 with a $350 entry. We will have multiple draft days for the Live and the Online versions, so participants may own multiple teams if they'd like.
All of these, of course, are 12-team formats. There will again be an insurance policy to guarantee a prize for anyone who can win both the NFBC main event and the NFBC Online Championship, but we don't have the cash amount yet for that until we talk to our insurance company, which probably isn't too happy with us after Lindy beat all odds.
But we'll announce that soon. And we again have a $5,000 Combined Standings prize between the NFBC main event and the Overall NFBC Online Championship (Live and Online).
Let's first look at the prize pool for the NFBC Double Play:
NFBC Double Play:
Online Overall Prizes:
1st Place = $60,000
2nd Place = $12,500
3rd Place = $5,000
4th Place = $3,500
5th Place = $2,000
6th Place = $1,000
7th Place = $750
8th Place = $500
9th Place = $500
10th Place = $350
League Prizes:
1st Place = $1,300
2nd Place = $650
NFBC Double Play
Live Overall Prizes:
1st Place = $25,000
2nd Place = $5,000
3rd Place = $2,500
4th Place = $1,000
5th Place = $500
NFBC Double Play
Live League Prizes:
1st Place = $2,000
2nd Place = $750
Combined Standings (NFBC Online & NFBC Main Event):
$5,000
$2,000
$1,250
$750
$500
So the goal of the Double Play plan was to grow the NFBC Online Championship prize pool but without just adding more online draft dates and times. We had 50 drafts in 8 days last year and I think we all know we could have had even more than that. We could have scheduled 60+ draft times in 8 days or added earlier dates to reach our goals, but we also wanted a mid-price range for folks who want to DRAFT LIVE. So we combined the two and now we have two special events in one.
I do not have a set schedule of draft dates for the Online version, but you can count on the eight days before Opening Day (March 28th-April 4th) to hold the bulk of the scheduled drafts. But we will also schedule some earlier draft dates in March to allow folks to compete in the Online Championship beyond that 8-day period. Stay tuned for details.

We have to work on the times for New York and Chicago, but you get the idea. We are offering a lot of options to play the NFBC Live Double Play, even hosting it at the same time as the main event on Saturday, March 20th because we know we have the entire Sunset Ballroom and some folks may just want the $500 option rather than the main event. We have space and can accommodate all wants and needs that weekend.
Again, a lot of this is being finalized as we finish contracts with each hotel, but this at least gives you a clearer insight to our vision. We are stuffing A LOT into both weekends, but that's why we needed six draft days instead of three!!
You asked for more and we're giving it to you.
NFBC Double Play. It could be worth $88,300 (counting league titles) plus a shot at the Combined Standings $5,000 prize and the $75,000 cash bonus. Wow. Good luck all and feel free to post your thoughts on this thread. Thanks.
