What Is The NFBC Double Play?

Last year we debuted the NFBC Online Championship and it took off faster than we ever imagined. We finished with 600 teams after projecting just 300 and wound up giving out a $40,000 grand prize after originally planning for a $20,000 grand prize. We actually had to stop taking signups at 600 because that's as many teams as we were allowed legally thanks to language in our rules.

This year we talked about growing this portion of the contest but we didn't want to just double the number of teams that we could take online. We are a live events business and thus our goal is to grow everything we do towards the live drafts, while recognizing that we've got a good hit with the Online Championship.

So this year we are eliminating the name of the NFBC Online Championship and rolling it into a new format. The old NFBC Online Championship will now be known as the NFBC Double Play. Here's how it works:

The NFBC Double Play has two parts to it:

1. A separate online contest that is projecting 720 teams and has a $60,000 grand prize. Cost is the same as last year at $350 per team and league prizes are the same as last year at $1300 for first place and $650 for second.

2. A Live Double Play component where a team can win the $25,000 grand prize in this contest and the $60,000 grand prize in the Online Championship. Every teams' results will be included in the Live Double Play and the Online Double Play, giving that owner two chances for a national title. There will be 300 teams (25 leagues) for the Live Double Play among the five cities. Cost is $500 per team and there is a $25 Events Fee at the Bellagio, Citi Field and Cubby Bear Wrigleyville. Top two teams in each league earn prizes: $2,000 for first and $750 for second.

If we sell out both portions of the event, the total number of teams battling for the $60,000 grand prize will be 1,020. Last year we had 600 teams. One team could actually win $85,000 in grand prizes and $2,000 in league prizes if it won through the Live Double Play.

We built this new model because a) we believe the $500 price point is a great entry level for folks who may want to join the NFBC's live events for the first time; and b) we wanted to grow the online portion without just doubling the number of online participants.

The NFBC Double Play remains a 12-team format with the same 5x5 scoring rules as the NFBC, 30-man rosters, $1,000 FAAB budget and all the rest. Online Double Play drafts will start in March and continue through Saturday, April 3. We will haveve 20+ dates to choose from and a number of different times with multiple leagues happening at once. Live Double Play drafts will be held at every location on March 19-21 and March 26-28. Go to the Double Play link for more details and an Events Schedule.

I hope this helps. Say goodbye to the NFBC Online Championship and hello to the NFBC Double Play. Play one way and win $60,000 or play the Live Double Play and have a shot at $85,000. Good luck all.

To clarify, the overall winner of the Doubl Play -live portion will win $25,000. If that person also has the most overall points when compared to the online participants he will win $60,000 more for a total of $85,000. Do I have this correct?

Greg, FYI, the reason my math was wrong is because the site does not at all relate what you just said. For one thing, the price listed for the on-line is listed as $500. Also, there is no hint that the winners of the live event have any chance at the on-line prize.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying here.

A couple other questions. Will there be a bonus for finishing first in both the double play and main? Lindy's accomplishment made the two events seem very attractive to me for this year if a prize will again be offered.

Also, I was wondering about the "buffet and bar" listed under the Belaggio schedule. Will that be an open bar that our fees pay for? It would really help to explain where the fees are going. Thanks.

Brian, I will add an Events Fee thread very soon. I'm trying to catch up with everything as I just got back from St. Louis where everything was finalized. Now that we have most of our contracts done I can show the menu and drinks and give folks a sense of what they're getting for their Events Fees. Hang tight a bit on that, but it's coming.

We'll try to explain the Double Play better. Yes, one person can win both if they are in the Live Double Play. The Online portion still has the same league prizes and now a bigger overall prize pool. So I think everyone wins in this format. If you do the math now Bryan you will see that total payout is 80% when you figure in the Combined Standings prize we have to announce soon.

There will be a Combined Standings prize for owners who do both the Classic main event and the Online Championship and a $75,000 bonus for anyone who wins the Main Event and Double Play. Lindy proved it can be done. So good luck to all again there.

Greg/Tom:

Do you have any set dates/times for the Online Version of the Double Play? ($350)

Will the majority, if not all of these leagues be offered starting on Sunday, March 28th and run during the week prior to the start of the MLB season on Sunday, April 4th?

We're still finalizing that Ken. But yes, the majority would be during those times. We'll offer some before either of the two weekends if the interest is there.

These should be on the Double Play signup list soon. I know it's confusing now with just the Live offerings, but we'll have the signup ready very soon for the online portion of the Double Play.

We know that with the two weekends of live events that some folks want us to offer earlier online Live Draft dates his year. We've added a few to the lineup right now and may even offer a few earlier than I have below. Give us your feedback and if we should add some the first week of March we will. I just want to make sure we fill whatever dates we offer. Here's the tentative lineup and like I said I will offer more if folks want them. Thanks all.
