Do You Want To See Runnerup Bids In 2005?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Jan 11, 2005 9:37 am

I know we've had this conversation before, but I'll bring it up for discussion again today. Last year we just showed the winning bids for each player in each league during the in-season FAAB period (free agent bidding) and sent out a weekly newsletter with those winning bids, while posting them on the Message Boards as well. Some owners like seeing just the winning bids, some owners want to see the runnerup bids and some owners want to see all of the bids.

As of now, we have it in the rules that only the winning bids will be shown to everyone. But I want to get opinions on this from the group again, so here goes:

For 2005 FAAB bidding, do you want to see the final results for:

A) Just the winning bids.

B) The winning bids and the runnerup bids.

C) All of the bids made on every player in every league.

I await the results and will act accordingly. I have an idea which way I'm leaning for 2005, but I'll do this unscientific poll first. Thanks for participating.

If the site is capable of posting all of the bids then I'd have no problem with full disclosure. I would like to see the patterns of those bidding in my league and help me plan accordingly with my future bids.

I agree with Sack. Seeing all the bids gives you some insight as to what others are thinking. I'd vote for seeing all the bids.

I vote A

Knowing losing bids takes away from the whole Blind bid thing, seeing bids doesn't make them blind anymore. I don't want my opponents to know that I bid on three SS's. If I didn't win one they can be sure I'll be looking again next week and make it more difficult on me.

Plus it would be bad for my Ulcer if I find out I won a player for $100 that I could have had for $10. Let me go on thinking the other guys bid $99 ;)

I would like to see them all. I think it would add another dimension to the overall strategy of the FAAB bidding process.

I would like to at least see the runner-up bid but have no issues with seeing all of them either

No Gordon, it's an open Message Board and anyone can vote on this. Besides, you paid your dues in 2004 with a Top 100 finish! Besides, I know you have 100,000 reasons to join again and I also know you have $100,000 to dip into if you need to pay the entry fee.

When you return, I'll gladly process that credit card that now has $100,000 more in it than it did last year at this time. :D

See, I knew there would be a lot of differing opinions. Three different votes during the first hour. This is a sensitive issue because some guys don't want to give away their bidding strategies and showing all of the bids does that. Some guys want to see how much they might have overbid or underbid for the top player out there and some guys would rather not know anything more than who won the bid and for how much.

Let's keep this going and we'll figure out a sensible solution before Draft Day.

I THINK IT SUCKS THAT WE CANT SEE THE OTHER BIDS. IN ANY OTHER LEAGUE IVE BEEN IN WE DO GET TO SEE THEM. YOU NEVER NO IF YOU MADE THE RIGHT BID OR NOT , I WOULD STILL LIKE TO KNOW TO THIS DAY IF I SPENT TO MUCH ON TONY WOMACK. I THINK ITS A BIG PART OF THE GAME THAT WE DONT HAVE . IVE EVEN CALLED GREG ABOUT IT , ITS THE ONLY BEEF I HAVE WITH THE NFBC. I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS , ALL BIDS OR AT LEAST THE SECOND HIGHEST BID. IF WE GOT THIS RULE IN BEERS ON EDDIE G.

I would like to see all the bids but, in order to protect each owner's FAAB strategy, just show the amounts and not who made the bid.

If my option isn't possible, then I vote just to see the winning bid.

I don't think there's a "right" or wrong answer. It is a matter of how the game is played. I think it adds an extra element showing all the bids. Maybe you bid on that SS you don't really need because now you know the guy 3 points behind you is looking for a SS. Or maybe you don't because you want to save that FAB for someone you might need later. An added element of strategy,IMO

I won't vote on the next 10 issues that come up so my opinion can be multiplied here. This is perfect. If you must show the runner up bid, preserve the 'blind' part and just show a number without a name attached.

Showing all bids would be the worst thing you could do and I would be very much opposed to it.

Then what's the point in showing anything but the winning bid? The only thing that accomplishes that I can see is to aggrivate you when you succesfully bid on a player, only to find out you bid $150 more than you needed to. Show everything or just the winning bid. Anything in between doesn't work.

I think B would suffice to allow teams a way to hone their FA strategy going forward. However I also believe the runnerup bid's team should be hidden.

I think that all you need to see is how much you overpaid for a certain player. I bid $35 for Vance Wilson... the next bid was for $5. Damn. Who cares if there were 5 other teams bidding $1 each. To see everyone's bid for a player will just be a mishmosh of information that would be of no real use especially if it includes every time a player is listed on their contingency lists.

The upside to showing all bids or the runner up is getting a weekly opportunity for an owner to view how acutely aware his competiton seems to be of the everchanging landscape of perceived/real player talent. The downside is you might feel silly if you weren't sure of your bid or yourself. Seems like a benefit to strong players and a detriment to those not in the aforementioned category. I vote not only show em, but post how many times an owner changed his bid in the last 13.5 minutes. Roto has no place for the willynilly.

I vote A. I think it works well. I don't see how seeing the runnerup bid horns your FA strategy.

Bids each week are a new event. Even if it could help wouldn't it be like using a cheat sheet for free agent bids? The way it is now you have to decide how much that player is worth to you in FAAB dollars. Not what someone else might pay for him.

You have to incorporate what you believe the overall market value is for the player you want or else you will be out of FA $ by August. The 2nd bid has a better chance to give a sane view of that player's value - and the value of similar players going forward.
