Let's Look At Depth At: Second Base

Let's continue our look at each position for the upcoming 2010 season by profiling second base. In our just completed Fanball Just Cheat Sheets Magazine, 10 different writers ranked their Top 60 players at each position. The editors then created a grid with all of these rankings by position and created an ADP. Here's a look at the Top 15:
Second Basemen
Name, Avg Pick by Fanball, High, Low
1. Chaase Utley 1.1, 1.0, 1, 2
2. Dustin Pedroia 3.3, 3, 2, 5
3. Ian Kinsler 3.4, 2.5, 1, 7
4. Brandon Phillips 5.6, 5.5, 3, 8
5. Brian Roberts 3.8, 3.5, 2, 8
6. Ben Zobrist 5.7, 5.5, 3, 9
7. Robinson Cano 6.2, 6, 2, 10
8. Aaron Hill 8.1, 8, 7, 10
9. Dan Uggla 9.2, 9, 7, 13
10. Asdrubal Cabrera 10.6, 10.5, 9, 12
11. Jose Lopez 11.5, 11.5, 10, 13
12. Ian Stewart 11.8, 12, 7, 15
13. Martin Prado 13.5, 13.5, 10, 19
14. Placido Polanco 15.9, 16, 13, 21
15. Howie Kendrick 16.2, 16, 6, 27
This looks like a very thin position to me. I had the same Top 4 as the overall rankings (though I had Roberts second, Pedroia third and Kinsler fourth) but there's a sharp drop-off after that group. The talent thins out even further after the first eight are off the board.
What does this mean? It looks like this is a position you may have to target early if you want to feel secure with your starter. In one of our magazine drafts, I waited too long and was left with Polanco, so I wasn't feeling too good about my second base situation.
There are some upside picks if you decide to hold off. Howie Kendrick is the eternal upside pick. Same with Rickie Weeks. The sleeper I really like is Weeks' Milwaukee teammate Casey McGehee. He's a good hitter, the Brewers like him and his multi-eligibility enhances his fantasy value.
But overall, I think this is a position you're going to want to address relatively early if possible. I've seen plenty of runs at this position and before you know it, the top talent is gone quickly and you're left holding the (second base) bag.
