Mastersball NFBC-style Slow-Mock

Post by Ryan C » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:09 am

I'm participating in a NFBC-style Slow Mock over on the Mastersball website. JP Kastner is the moderator and tracking the draft as it progresses and gave me the thumbs up to dicuss this draft here.

We have some NFBC message board regulars like myself and Mike Ladd (viper) as well industry vets Todd Zola, Lawr Michaels and Perry (Captain) Van Hook in the draft. It's a commentary draft - so the participants are required to give a little insight as to why they picked the guy they did as well as comment on other owners picks. We are averaging about 1 1/2 rds a day and are in the 10th rd and moving.

We have already had some bizarre picks (in rd 2 you can see me comment on the craziest pick you'll likely see in any mock this preseason). Lawr's picks have been interesting as well. I think it makes a nice compliment to the ADP data that we presently have to work with and it would be interesting for those participating to get the opinions of some true NFBC veterans. Mark you can even create another alter-ego on their message boards to comment.

We definitely have some drafters who aren't as experienced in the 15 team format but that has helped us to break away from the MDC influenced ADP that everyone is presently using. Granted, it's just a mock-draft, but I haven't met an NFBC-er yet that wasn't interesting in another source of data. And hey, at least you'll get to see all of Lawr Michael's sleepers. :D

Here's our First Round results:

1. Albert Pujols

2. Hanley Ramirez

3. Ryan Braun

4. Joe Mauer

5. Matt Kemp

6. Alex Rodriguez

7. Chase Utley

8. Tim Lincecum

9. Miguel Cabrera

10. Troy Tulowitski

11. Mark Teixeira

12. Prince Fielder

13. Evan Longoria

14. David Wright

15. Carl Crawford

P.S. - Sandoval went in the second round two picks before Zimmerman.

I checked out this draft over the weekend.

Stephen Drew stands out as the big shocker, though I recall being a bit surprised by more than that pick.

Yeah - that pick was really off the board. Did you see my commentary on it!

But yeah - there are some out of the box picks - but that to me has made it interesting. Again, freed from the cookie-cutter ADP that everyone uses at MDC - drafters are taking lots of different approaches. I think sometimes NFBC players get locked into a pre-set list based on SAT draft info. The smart players than try to exploit that list come March.

Just look at where closer's are going in this draft. The second group is just starting to come off the board - a full two rds later than they did in my SAT drafts. This is a direct result (i think) of drafters not using the MDC rankings - which force all those RP into view about rd 6/7. Just one example of how MDC effects ADP.
