I have one rule in fantasy baseball: when considering a Met, go with Plan B. In my 38 years as a baseball fan, I have never heard of a player missing time with a thyroid problem...but if it could happen, it would happen to the Mets.

Last year, I felt and wrote that David Wright was as close to a roto sure thing as there was. Young, injury free, consistent, controversy free, no hint of steroids aiding him, good surrounding lineup. Combination of being a lock, but also having upside. I rued not being fortunate enough to draft him. But I forgot my one rule and sure enough...

What's that noise? Oh, it's Wright and Bay dropping on draft boards. No Reyes, No Beltran, No problem?

Here are a few more with thyroid cancer (year of diagnosis):

Eli Marrero (1998)

Danny Jackson (1995)

Jerry DiPoto (1994)

Hell, I just played hoops with a thyroid condition. I sure hope it's not worse than taking synthroid every day. This does NOT sound good.

Good point, though I feel like Davis' issue fell under the heading of "cancer" as opposed to thyroid problem. I just looked hyperthyroidism up and one potential cause is listed as "certain medications and supplements"

Surgery could be part of the cure. It depends on the doctors and his condition. Maybe out 2 months??
You are looking at this pessimistically. Now Shawn will have the chance to show you his brilliance on the waiver wire and managing a lineup. It's all part of the BIG picture.

If I heard correctly, on today’s spring training broadcast of the Mets they said Reyes would be out anywhere from 2-8 weeks. Those drafting week 1 will probably have no idea if it’s 2 or 8 or somewhere in-between. Week 2 people may have a better idea of what it will be. All of this effects when Reyes will be drafted.

Is it an advantage or disadvantage? Only time will tell.

BTW, as I am writing this the Mets just went back-to-back jacks to dead center field (410).

greg- with wieters on the cover of sports illustrated and reyes out for who knows how long you need to start a "games missed" pool or something and take a 15% rake on it to try and get some $ back.
There will be issues like this.

And there will be issues where I get someone later Week 1 than he would go in Week 2.

Ex: Another closer goes down after my draft and before Week 2. I draft the backup in Rd 26. Week 2 he goes in Rd 12.

Ex: Sean Rodriguez goes nuts (again) after the Week 1 draft and is named TB 2B. I get him in rd 23. You get him in Rd 10. This type of thing could apply to many young players competing for jobs.

I give the edge to drafting Week 2, but it could possibly turn out that Week 1 is better if there are many news announcements.
