Willie Davis, R.I.P.

I don't like saying anything 'sucks'. There just has to be a better way of phrasing something of which we don't like. But when heroes and even anti-heroes start disappearing from around us, it sucks.
Willie Davis played for the Dodgers mostly in the 60's. He was never their best base stealer or best home run hitter. Heck, he wasn't even the best player from his own family playing for the Dodgers.
Their wasn't a man alive, in my eyes, who made a triple look cooler than Willie Davis. His legs were a blur, his hands in a jackknife position as if cutting air, everything on that thin body working in perfect unison.
Being a Giant fan as a kid, I knew every member of the Dodgers well. Wills, Gilliam, Davis, Davis, it seemed like that part of the lineup was etched in stone for a long time and with their pitching, ekeing out a couple of runs was all the Dodgers needed. Davis' triples were a key source of those runs.
He leaves us with three gold glove awards and is the all time leader in hits for the Dodgers. In a few years, I won't remember those facts though. What I will remember is Willie Davis, simply, hitting a triple.
Rest in peace, Willie Davis.
