Yesterday we held another mock draft with industry professionals for our second issue of Fantasy Sports Magazine, which every NFBC member will receive in the mail around March 1. This was another interesting draft that featured some interesting insights. Anyway, I'll post a few rounds here for everyone to enjoy and get the talk going.
Here's the owners and their first round picks:
1. Alex Rodriguez (Walter Lis, STATS)
2. Albert Pujols (Brandon Funston, Yahoo)
3. Carlos Beltran (Dave Gonos, CBS Sportsline.com)
4. Carl Crawford (Ron Shandler, BaseballHQ.com)
5. Vladimir Guerrero (Greg Ambrosius, NFBC)
6. Bobby Abreu (Nate Ravitz, RotoTimes.com)
7. Miguel Tejada (Eric Karabell, ESPN.com)
8. Alfonso Soriano (Tom Kessenich, NFBC)
9. Johan Santana (Jeff Erickson, RotoWire.com)
10. Todd Helton (Matthew Berry, RotoPass.com)
11. Manny Ramirez (Scott Engel, ESPN.com)
12. Randy Johnson (Jim Heery, Leaderboardsports.com)
In three mock drafts we hosted for our magazine, the first pick was Beltran, Pujols and now A-Rod. So three different guys went No. 1. Crawford went in the first round in all three mock drafts, but never as high as No. 4. Two starting pitchers in the top 12 was also interesting.
More results to come soon.

Keep it coming Greg. Crawford at #4 is wild, ecspecially since it seems that sb's are a bit more en vogue now, so I don't know if he is worth it at #4. Late 1st round for Helton, very interesting. Lets see a few more rounds, Where is Schilling? Damon? Ortiz? Bellhorn? Youkilis?

Why only 12 teams in the Mock draft? I realize that a mock draft is just an exercise but 30 catchers going to 15 teams is a whole lot different from 30 going to 12. These extra 3 teams do make a difference in how speed and closers are treated. Then again, finding 15 people who can do a mock draft at the same time is not an easy task.
As an example, consider that case of Gagne. In this draft, the team that took him already had a solid offensive base with Beltran & Thome but Gagne was taken 27th overall. Would you pick a closer with your 2nd pick with only one offensive player under your belt. The answer is less clear.
Still I am looking forward to see the rest of the draft. Mock drafts by good people are worthy of study and this is a solid group.

Very interesting. So Ron Shandler (love the book) picked Crawford, Renteria, Rollins and Lopez in the first four rounds. Should I predict a 2B, a 1B, a 3B, a CM, a OF, a SP, and a CL in the next six rounds? Maybe not in that order...

More rounds please
But I do agree with the point about 15 teams. I think it is great to study a 12, but a 15 team draft is much deeper IMHO. I don't know if anyone in the fantasy BB establishment does one. Anyone know?

if you want to look at some completed 15 teams drafts, go to Mock Draft Central and look at the completed drafts, they may not have the quality of drafties as the one Greg has posted and participated in, but it has the concept I think everyone is looking for

Our magazine produces 12-team mock drafts because the majority of leagues in the country are 12-team rather than 15-team leagues. Hell, the NFBC is one of the only national contests that has 15-team leagues. So that's why we do those for our expert leagues.
Maybe later this month I'll ask 15 industry guys to join me for an NFBC 30-round draft and we'll all throw our hard earned bucks in a pool and play for bragging rights and cash. The only bad thing is that all of us industry guys are a bunch of cheap skates.

But that would be a fun draft for all NFBC members to study, for better or worse.
