Okay, a lot of talk about Carlos Gonzalez today.

He is my #1 breakout player entering 2010. I run player comps based on 2009 skill sets vs all skill sets from 2002-2009. this gives me a pool of players a certain player is similar too. i narrow down the search by age and BANG i know what players have displayed the same SKILLS at the same age.

For Carlos Gonzalez, only one name came up...Ryan Braun. ya i know, it seems like a leap of faith, but remember, this is an objective determination. this isn't me wishing cargo comps to braun, it's based on actual facts.

however, with that said, we are dealing with a small sample size of at bats and he did kind of come out of nowhere this past year. but sometimes, something just clicks with a younger player and then he gets it. playing in colorodo has to help!!!

i was worried that others would catch on when i saw shandler's new "mayberry method" listing CarGo in the same grouping as the elite first rounders. i guess most people didn't give that much weight. thankfully.

anyways, here are Cargo's numbers from the 2nd half of last year, the 2009 MLB playoffs and the 209/10 winter league...

336 at bats

68 runs

20 hr

46 rbi

15 sb

.315 avg

expanding that to 550 at bats...

111 runs

33 hr

75 rbi

25 sb

.315 avg

ALL ABOARD!!!!!! :D  :D

ALL ABOARD!!!!!! :D  :D It's funny Mark, I was high on Cargo....but he was one of those young power/speed outfielders (like Nelson Cruz & Andrew McCutcheon) that were drafted well ahead of their ADP or slow/early draft position. I misjudged & missed out on him in everyone of my last two weekend drafts except one.

Of course the one I got him in is also the team that I was able to grab Pujols & Lincecum, so if he does turn out to be Braun....

Mark,

I 100% agree with you on this one. You and I were going after Carlos G. in the $1300 far after everyone else had dropped. I didn't have the $ to push past $20, I wish I had!!!

FYI, I think I have you (atleast for a better draft in the main event !)

Good luck

Chris

Yep I wanted Gonzalez also but he went the pick right before mine in the sixth round in my main event league. :(

At least I got the real Ryan Braun along with Tommy Hanson.

BEFORE last year's draft, i wished i had used my "Comp Machine". Would have told me Alexie Ramirez was a POS.
Another reason you should come to Chicago next year Mark - CarGo $15, Masterson $1 (me), Matusz $3.

And the SP's were UNDERpriced, at least in my book - Sabathia $24, Grienke $25, Felix $25 (me), Haren $25.
i hear you jack. this was a $1,300 auction with people who have done it for years. very experienced auction owners. PS - our auction facilitator was THE SAME ONE WHO FACILITATED THE INFAMOUS DRAFT IN AC!!!!!!!!!

Before the auction started (about 4.15pm), tom k said that he doesn't mean to rush us but we have to be out of citifiled by 10pm or else they will charge a $2,000 additional fee. again, no rush.

well, we were done with our auction at 8.30. started at 4.15 that was the fastest auction i've been a part of. owners were throwing out players at or above their value prices.

as for coming to chicago next year, it's either there or online. hell, if there are two weekends again, i'll just do BOTH :D :D :D

seriously, i'd like to do chicago. definately a possibility.

truth be told, i just think east coasters (on average) are more analytical than people anywhere else in the country.

see, put me in THAT auction and i'm crowned league champion today. some people don't want to hear that drafting in a different venue is easier BUT SORRY, IT'S TRUE.

seeing those low dollar values makes me wonder why i keep tyring to win vs more sharks than less sharks. maybe i'll smart'n up next year.
Thing about an auction is that it only takes TWO people to drive up a price. Tough to say that all those players above wouldn't have gone for more (much more in some cases), as the person who won them may also have gone considerably more.

That being said, I know that auction in NY is a tough one. However, you can't proclaim yourself as a great player if you are beating up on the weak kids all the time, right? ;)

the real question Jack is...why isn't there a (me) behind CarGo and Matusz?
Not enough $ at the end for Matusz, as we were saving at least $3-4 for Sean Rodriguez, the soon to be 2B for TB.

CarGo went pretty late, too, if I recall correctly, so we may not have had the $ budgeted at that point. But we weren't as sold on him as you are.

In my 3 ESPN auctions with NFBC guys, CarGo went for exactly $17 in each.

What kind of stat line does everyone think that he will have with a 6th round pick?

What about his 2008 stats .242 13 hrs 26 rbi 31 runs and 4 sb's in 302 AB's

S.Rodriquez went for $7 in our auction. Again, shark infested waters leave less profit. For $7, he better damn well produce! I have my doubts. K rate in majors just too bad to ignore.

lance- what is he "on pace for". i will help out: sb's= 0. you do the rest. i would ask a tech guy from fanball but the answer would look like this a.?'4sd`=43@m

The opposite of "On Pace" would probably be "He's due".

Last night Juan Pierre came up in the 9th inning of a 3-3 game, the announcers were something like this-

Announcer 1- Pierre is leading off the 9th, how about a home run, Juan.

Announcer 2- Uh, well, Pierre didn't homer all of last year.

Announcer 1- He's due!

Looks like Carlos could be headed to the DL. :(

Carlos Gonzalez's tight hamstring will be evaluated today, and if it hasn't shown much improvement, he could be headed to the DL, according to the Denver Post's Troy Renck
