My Draft from Pick #10 (15 Team Roto)
Posted: Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:00 pm
After reading a few other owners post about their drafts and reasoning, I thought I'd copy them a little bit. Knowing how much that I enjoyed reading their post I hope that you enjoy this one as well.
The first thing that stuck out to me before the draft ever started was that of the selection of your preferred draft order. We do this for our local Fantasy Football league. We would draw bingo balls at random and the person with the lowest # gets to pick where they want to be slotted in the draft. I believe that this is exciting and allows you to try to control the first few players that you may end up with. There's nothing worse than being slotted say 7th and the best 2 players that are left for you are 2 players that you may not like or believe in but still have to draft them because you don't want to reach on a player so early in the draft. With that all being said let the draft begin!
I selected # 10 in my draft. This was my #1 selection for a few reasons. My target at #10 was Ryan Howard.
1.10 Ryan Howard - My reasoning is this Power Power and more Power. can you really argue with 45 Hr 140+ Rbi's 100+ Runs. Plus he plays for my hometown team . I would have drafted Longo here if he had fell to me at #10 but he did go 8th overall. I passed on Teixeria and Lincecum. I think Tex and Howard can be a debatable arguement. I don't believe in drafting a pitcher in the 1st rd. Hence why no Lincecum.
2.6 Justin Upton - Upton was one of my 3 targets to get predraft at this spot, along with Matt Holiday and Tulo. I know Tulo was a bit of a reach for him to drop to me but hey we can all dream a little bit. Upton was my 3rd pick of the group so I had to sweat it out for 2 more picks. Holiday went 2.3 and Tulo went 1.14.
3.10 Derek Jeter - Another predraft target for this round. I always have a group of at least 3 players in the early rounds on who I would like to get in the spots where I'm drafting. Here I was looking to get one of the top 4 SS. I think I did that. A 15 team league a big time SS won't last long. Plus his BA should help balance out Howard's in case he only hits 270 or lower. The other 2 targets where Zimmerman and Cano. Jeter was 2nd on my wish list from this group. Zimmerman went 3.1 and Cano went 4.3 overall
4.6 Jason Bay - Wow this maybe where I tripped up a bit. I was very excited to see Cano still there on the way back to me but as I stated before he got snatched up 3 picks ahead on me.
My 4th round targets went off the board as I was really hoping to land a big time SP or 2nd base man. Verlander went 3.15, Cliff Lee went 4.1 and Aaron Hill went 4.5. I switched gears and started to look at best available and seen Bay and jumped on him. after looking back, I really think that a pick of Zobrist, Wainwright, Lester and Carpenter may have been a better choice. Need less to say that non of these players made it back to me in the next round.
5.10 Josh Johnson - I'm back on track He was a target of mine since the season ended last year. I really wanted to pair him up with a top 5-10 SP. Oh well he'll have to be my ace. I guess it could be worse. There where no other players that I wanted in this round after the way the draft was unfolding. As soon as the last of the previously mentioned had been drafted I already had him queued up to be selected.
6.6 Yovani Gallardo - I had really hoped that Cole Hammels (6.3), Javier Vazquez (5.12) or Josh Beckett (6.5) made it back to me. Non of them did. Oh well I settled for the new Brewers Ace.
7.10 K-Rod - This was a no brainer. I needed a closer and the big name where already gone. I guess people at the draft may say that Soria is a better pick than K-Rod. I really think K-Rod and the Mets do better this season.
8.6 Ubaldo Jimenez - Again He was my clear cut choice with the players that are left on the board. I did like Carlos Gonzalez (8.7) and Heat Bell (8.4)
9.10 Micheal Cuddyer - Seeing that I now have 4 batters and 4 pitchers I figured that I needed to get back on the hitting horse. Now is about the time that I notice how fast players go with a 15 team league. WOW alot of nice palyers went before it got back to me. CarGo(8.7), Bruce (8.9), Morgan (8.12), Bourn (9.4) and Weeks (9.5). I went with Cuddyer because he's OF and 1B/CI eligible and I think that he's a bit underrated. Much like the Twins as a whole. Thats a very good baseball team.
10.6 Yunel Escobar - Being a Phillies fan I've seen a lot of this guy since he became a major leaguer. He was another of my predraft targets.I really think that this guy is capable of hitting 320+ and drive in 90+ runs. He's a very nice fit for my MI.
Lets review the 1st 10 picks
1B Howard
OF J Upton
SS Jeter
OF Bay
SP1 J Johnson
SP2 Gallardo
RP K-Rod
SP3 Jimenez
OF/1B/CI Cuddyer
SS/MI Escobar
I'm pretty happy thus far. I'm thinking that a catcher/2nd baseman/closer/3rd baseman are in order soon. Let's see how it goes.
11.10 Placido Polanco - Nice another Phillie and he'll fill my 2nd base slot. After a few games at third I'll be able to put him at 3rd base if I can get another 2nd baseman or can't get a good 3rd baseman. I did miss out on Heyward (10.15) and Posada (11.4) in this round. I would have taken either one of them ahead of Polanco.
12.6 Paul Konerko - I know this was my big mistake of the draft. I chose him over Jenks (12.7) Fransisco (12.9), Franklin (12.10), Fuentes (12.14) and Lidge (13.4). I should've seen this closer run coming a mile away and jump on the 30+ homeruns from Paul. A few other closer also went as well with the likes of Dotel, Capps, Wood. It looks like I'll be doing the FA route as 1/3 of the closers change or get hurt during the season.
13.10 Chris Coughlin - I was happy once again. I like this guy and think that he can hit 300+ and steal me 25+ bases and a full season with the fish. The 90-100 runs scoured won't hurt either
14.6 Neftali Feliz - I fell for the hype. point blank. There's not much sure fire talent at this point in the draft, so I took a shot. It may pay off later on in the season. Maybe he gets the closer role if Fransisco falters or get's hurt. I think I should have gone the JA Happ (15.12) here.
15.10 Ryan Doumit - I needed a catcher here and bad. I wanted Soto but he went 1 pick before me again.
16.6 Stephen Strasburg - I just wanted this guy on my roster. I know he'll start in the minors but he'll be up here very soon. The only other option here would've been Jorge Delarosa (16.7)
17.10 Alex (tissue paper) Gordan - I needed a 3rd baseman. I hope he comes back soon.
18.6 Andy Pettitte - Old reliable. I like having a few of these guys on the back end of my rotation. Good veteran on a very good team that can score for him and won't blow too many of his wins with the bullpen.
19.10 Marlon Byrd - Needed another OF and the Cubbies have a decent line up and ballpark for him to hit in.
20.6 Matt Joyce - Now I'm getting slaphappy. There's almost nothing left.
Here are the rest on the picks 21-30
21.10 Derek Lowe - See Pettitte
22.6 Fernando Rodney - Let's hope Fuentes falters
23.10 Ryan Madsen - Well we all know about Lidge
24.6 Daniel Bard - Down goes Papelbon!
25.10 Dioner Navvaro - I needed another catcher
26.6 Carlos Santana - Maybe he's the real deal and comes up in May or June for the Indians
27.10 Aaron Rowand - Yawn
28.6 Brett Wallace - Maybe good, Maybe not. Come on it's round 28!
29.10 Carlos Guillen - Old but can still hit
30.6 Oliver Perez - Ewwwwwww my 1st drop!
Thank god that was over. It was over 4 hours long. This was an online draft so I was getting pretty board during the last 10 rounds.
Here's the whole team
C1- Doumit
C2- Navarro
1B- Howard
2B- Polanco
SS- Jeter
3B- Gordan
CI- Konerko
MI- Y-Escobar
OF1- J Upton
OF2- Bay
OF3- Cuddyer
OF4- Coughlin
OF5- Byrd
Utli- Rowand
Bench - Wallace, Guillen, Iwamura ( I dropped Joyce), Santana

SP3- Jimenez
SP4- Pettitte
SP5- Lowe
SP6- Kendrick (I dropped O Perez)
RP1- K-Rod
RP2- Madsen
RP3- Rodney

I wouldn't do much different than I did in this draft other than really grab a 2nd closer and a 3b earlier. Every team is going to have it's weak spots so I guess that these are mine. I hope that you enjoyed reading this. Please comment on how you think that I may have done and on any of the picks that I may have made. Good luck to everyone this season and Lets go Phillies!
Chase Utley for MYP and Halladay for CY Young!
