Can an official scorer credit a non starting pitcher with the win if he comes into the game before the first pitch of the game is thrown, his team is leading but he does not complete 5?



Could have happened to Valdez tonight, but he got the third out in the 5th.

If the pitcher played for the home team, then the player would be removed before the first pitch of the game and the substitute would probably be the starter. Not sure how it would work here, where the first pitch of the game had already been thrown. Interesting question.

I would say yes. Even though a pitcher has not thrown a pitch, he is listed on the starting lineup card that is submitted before the game. So the 2nd pitcher is a reliever even though no other P on his team has actually thrown a pitch.

It depends on whether the starting pitcher was simply a late scratch or if he was in the official starting lineup handed to umpires.

If it is the former, the 'reliever' is indeed the starter and must go five innings for a win.

If it is the ladder, the 'reliever' is indeed a reliever and can qualify for a win without throwing five innings.

It is rare, but it has occurred.
