Picks 20 -30

Post by JamesH » Thu Jun 03, 2010 1:49 am

I was comparing picks 20-30 in my two big money leagues. In our $1K satellite, I think we did great. Valbuena and Sherrill are the only non-contirbutors and Pettite, Callaspo, Rauch, Braden, Zito, Sanchez, Gio and Gomes are big parts or our team. In the Main Event, we weren't so good. The only players still on our team are Casey Blake and Braden. Unfortunately we dropped Pagan early in the season in both leagues.

Looking back out are Main draft it is no wonder we've struggles so much.

$1,000 Satellite

20-Pettite, 21-Callaspo, 22-Rauch, 23-Valbuena, 24-Zito, 25-Gaby Sanchez, 26-Braden, 27-Gio, 28-Pagan, 29-Gomes, 30-Sherrill.

Main Event

20-Blake, 21-Diaz, 22-Luis Castillo, 23-Rowland-Smith, 24-Ziegler, 25-Pagan, 26-Nady, 27-Braden, 28-Storen, 29-Ryan, 30-Flores

Anybody else want to share the last third of thier draft?

I have several teams so I'll share my best and worst work rather than bore everyone. These are both 12 teamers.

Best:

20 Magglio Ordonez, 21 Erik Bedard, 22 Kelly Shoppach 23 Mat Latos, 24 Yadier Molina, 25 Milton Bradley, 26 Shaun Marcum, 27 Luis Valbuena, 28 Gio Gonzalez, 29 Kerry Wood, 30 Garrett Atkins

Some definite stinkers in there, but the Maggs/Latos/Marcum/Gio combination has been great, and Molina has been fine as well. Wood is starting to pay off now, and I think Bedard will pay off eventually as well.

Worst:

20 Ian Desmond, 21 Kelly Shoppach, 22 Erik Bedard, 23 Joe Blanton, 24 Shaun Marcum, 25 Orlando Hudson, 26 Casey Blake, 27 Edwin Encarnacion, 28 Milton Bradley, 29 Brandon Lyon, 30 Luis Valbuena

Desmond has been OK, and Marcum great, but otherwise eight complete bombs. It's no wonder this team is in the bottom 50 or so in the DP overall.

It'd be hard to top what Pelfrey has done. I was fortunate to get him in the different leagues I play in.

In our St. Louis main, we had NO 3B after 24 rounds, so we took Bautista in round 25. We dropped him a couple weeks later. So we went from a DUMB result of having no drafted 3B, to having maybe the best one on our team, to dropping him and settling at the time for I think Feliz. We later picked up Wigginton.

Did anyone draft or pick up Bautista in the first week and not drop him after his pathetic April? I had him on nearly every one of my teams and dropped him from all of them by the time he exploded in May. Same thing with Latos.

nice thread...I think most nfbc vets would tell you that these rd's are where you win yer league.

I believe 12 tm is nowhere near as difficult as 15, so I am only talking about my experience w/ 15 tm's.

Most of my picks in said rd's have been horrible (I mean scratch yer head what the hell was I possibly thinking bad)...so I will give a few of the best over the yrs.

Last yr got Russell Branyan (and his 31 hr's) in the last rd!

In '08 got Ervin Santana in 2 lge's (rd's 21 & 25) he had 16 wins, 214 k's, 3.49 era, and 1.1 whip.

Also in '08 Carlos Quentin (probably best value pick I ever had) 36 hr's, 96 runs, 100 rbi's in rd 28!

I also seemed to have drafted Barry Zito somewhere in the 20's the last 3 yrs and he was terrible. Of course this yr he is not on any of my teams  damn you ZITO!

I have to say that I saw an awful lot of Cactus lge ST games back in '08...seeing them in person seemed to help, except for my infatuation w/ Tulo....that guy sucked in '08 and helped bring down my teams, despite some of the great later pks.

This yr I think Callaspo (rd 20) has been best so far, although I have high hopes for Buster (26).
Always be closing.

It's nice to get a late boost from a player or two, but I think leagues are won in the middle rounds where strategic choices weigh heavily and your non-superstar core is drafted.

[/QUOTE]after posting my response I knew I was wrong (and you hit the nail on the head KJ) while it's certainly advantageous to land a Bautista in the 29th rd, etc...where you win is in the middle rd's w/ accurate player assessments.

My brother has a top 5 offense, if he took Ubaldo instead of Beckett there's a good chance he's in 1st overall. One player. One player can make a dramatic difference.

btw - 2 more hr's for JB today, where was this power surge 2 yrs ago when I drafted him in 30th rd?
