Main Event Thoughts - Can we talk about my Auction Team?

Week Nine Results - I did a little better, but only marginally. I was able to get the requisite AB (316) and was able to get close to my targets one would expect but getting close ain't enough. I sit in with the middle of the pack and I need to exceed expectations in order to get back in the game. I made a huge mistake in sticking with Andruw Jones. He had six AB through Friday with one (good) hit.

As far as pitching goes, I had more "corrections". Garza, Danks, and Shields were very hittable. I still got good results out of Weaver, Cecil and Lowe. Again, I ended up with an "acceptable" week (four wins, 47 K's), but not the move I wanted to make.

Week 10 Free Agents - I finally gave up on Villaneuva, so I went looking for some starting pitching. I ALMOST (yes, Chesty, I was outbid again) got Bumgarner (lost $33 to $31) and Niese (lost $23 to $21). But thank goodness I got Westbrook. ;) Still, Westbrook can be of use in certain situations.

I also bid on Peralta, but would never have considered the $167 bid that won. In my opinion, he might be of some limited help (certainly not to my BA), but I had a supplemental bid on Infante. The Braves, as long as Cripple Jones is hurting, have been batting him second between Prado and Heyward. Jones got a cortizone shot in the offending knuckle (OUCH), so I am not sure when he will be back. I do not view Infante as a long term asset, and he is really no asset at all when he hits down in the line up, but he could score me some runs in the short term. I dropped Blake DeWitt.

I was surprised that there was not much interest in David Murphy. He, a left handed bat in Arlington, especially while Cruz is on the DL, has got to have some value while he is hitting fifth or sixth. I bid $33 and there was no runner up bid. I guess I overbid, but I think this guy can help. I dropped Jones.

Week Ten Plans - I put Murphy in for Guillen. Guillen may make it back into my line up next week because he has more value as a second baseman than an OFer, but of course only if he hits. The rest of my OF stays the same (Either, Kemp, Victorino, Willingham, and DeJesus). I put Infante in, at least until Friday, to try and catch some Arizona magic. The rest of my MI becomes Guzman and Furcal. On the corners I have Votto, Ramirez, and Tejada. Soto and Hundley round out the catchers. I see too many empty sticks (Guzman, DeJesus, and Tejada).

Would the Royals please trade Soria? Would the ChiSox please trade Putz (who has been awesome each of the four weeks I have had him)? I am way behind in saves, but no help is on the horizon without a change in venue. Garza, Shields, Weaver and Danks are still solid to excellent at the top. Cecil may, just may have cultivated his talent at the MLB level. Lowe's last four starts are much closer to what I expected. I hope that my last starter will actually get start. Bailey will have at least one rehab start. He may have a weekend start against KC.

Seriously, can we talk about my Auction team?

Wayne, nice auction team :D I see you saw the value of K.Johnson unlike your boys in ATL. By the way what's your take on Yunel (0 hrs ?!). Where's that 20hr px we're supposed to have seen by now ?

I like Yunel, but more as a baseball player than a fantasy player. Having watched him more than a few times, I have Yunel pegged as a singles/doubles type. Where he hits in the line-up has more to do with his value than his power. I am not saying that 20 HR couldn't happen, but I do not think it will be the norm for him. Good range, good arm, good defense. Definitely a MLB starter. Slightly above good utility player bat with less SB potential than you would imagine. However, 10-12 HR not out of the question and could be a really good 2H player.
While vulturing has been my bailiwick in this league , if I add yet another 2B I might not be able to field a valid lineup. Speaking of which, when is Gordon "30 consecutive games without an extra base hit" Beckham gonna start hitting something more than infield singles?
Boy, isn't that a good question! I have, unfortunately, not seen him play since March, so I have nothing to add depth to what the numbers are obviously saying. We had a good post last year quoting some scouts who noted some holes in his swing and maybe that has caught up to him, though we never saw it last year when he was moving the second and third times through the league. Going into the season I had high hopes he would avoid the so-called "sophomore slump". While I thought he was going a little higher than he should have through the drafts, I thought he would show much more in 2010 than he has.

Gut feel only...if he continues to get the opportunities, he will hit his way out of it. The base talent is just too good.
I have a rule in fantasy that i usally go by but will break it once in a while and the rule is SHOW ME TWICE,and thats if a young player has a big year before i risk a high pick on him maybe wait a year and see if he can do it again.Beckham fits this bill as i should have played it safe with a safer player.I dont even know why im still hanging on to him.Another player that had a big year last season and going in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this season that fits this rule is Pablo Sandoval, what happened to this guy Felipe Lopez has more power. On another note a lot of you guys were saying Austin Kearns has NO VALUE take a look at his last week as he is heating up and even thru in a 2 stolen base game.HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW.
Eddie, with that in mind, why is Beckham and Sandoval failing while McCutchen and Andrus flourishing? I myself wish I could figure this out - it'd make playing this game alot easier.

I'm not in the no-value camp, but the incredibly streaky camp. I picked him for a couple weeks in one lge then dropped when I thought the streak was over - but he's ramping again. I still think there are a few 3-for-35 weeks around the corner for Kearns ... although that has been half the season so far for Beckham and he's still on my roster.

If you go back to last year- Longoria, Lincecum, JJ, Braun, Kemp, Votto, RZimm, Choo, Cruz, Lester all avoided the sophomore jinx.

Stats can lull you into confidence - but we're analyzing humans and the subtlest change in their thought process or physical ability can lead to unexpected outcomes. Take a guy like Greinke, who we know has a cobweb of unknowns going on inside his head, and you get crazy volatility in consecutive seasons from not looking like a professional player one season, to dominating the entire league the next and then following it up with being subpar this season.

I think too many - especially experts who come to conclusions using player populations - rely on the slightest probability edge while overlooking how a slight change can blow that probability out of the water.
