I was at the game last night. It was a fun night.
First, it’s a Cubs-Sox matchup. Then they had the Chicago Blackhawks out there walking around with the Stanley Cup and throwing out the first pitch. Then the double no-hitter was going.
I have my own scorebook and I usually keep score or my daughter does it. Last night I was there with my cousins and brother in-law, I didn’t bring my book because I knew the night was going to be more about having a few drinks and laughs with my relatives than it was going to be about just watching the game.
In the bottom of the fourth I turn to my cousin and say “I know it’s early, but Lilly hasn’t given up a hit yet”. My cousin is not really a big baseball fan, but whatever fan level he is at is for the White Sox. He thinks I’m giving him a hard time about the hits and turns back to me and tells me “well, neither do the Cubs”. Which I hadn’t realized.
So now it’s the top of the sixth, I’m still talkin’ with the relatives but I’m also keeping a close eye on the game. Sox don’t get a hit in the sixth and my cousins tell me they have to leave. No problem, we say our good-by’s and I’m still there with my brother in-law who is a baseball (Cub) fan.
Now we are actually watching the game. But in my mind I not really worried about the double no-no, yet.
Seventh inning, Cubs get a hit and run.

Good now I can just concentrate on Lilly getting 6 more outs. Its right about then that I start getting bummed at myself for not keeping score. 35+ years since a Cub has thrown a no-hitter in Wrigley, I’m there, and I’m not keeping score.
Eighth inning, no hits…..
Ninth inning, it is raining fairly hard, I don’t care. I really think it’s going to happen. I just knew that I was 3 outs from seeing a no-hitter. Hell, the Stanley Cup was sitting on the mound before the game, this is a lock.
Smack…… Juan Pierre  up the middle for a hit…………….. “F***!!!”

Hey, it was still a great time and your team won, right Russel?
I told my wife when Pierre was sent up what a great move by Ozzie. Most managers would go lefty-righty, but Ozzie sent up the guy with the best chance of getting a hit.
A very enjoyable game.

I was at the game too. A sox fan from Nashville. I went with my wife and my nephew and his wife. Great time indeed and the 9th inning was intense especially as the rain started to fall harder. I thought I was going to see my second no hitter as lilly took the mound in the 9th. After Marmol got out of the bases loaded jam in the 9th inning, I told my wife I would've rather have seen the no hitter. Great game nonetheless.
I read that the last game that both pitchers took a no-hitter into the 7th inning was 30 years ago in 1980. So those of you at the game saw something that hadn't been seen in a game in a long time.

Sox don’t get a hit in the sixth and my cousins tell me they have to leave. Man, how can you leave a game while a possible no-hitter is being pitched; let alone TWO!

July 13, 1980. Yankees vs White Sox at old Comiskey Park.
Rudy May pitching for the Yanks. Steve “rainbow’ Trout for the Sox.
The Sox get their first hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Chet Lemon doubles to CF, then he scores when the next hitter, Ron Pruitt, singles to RF. The back to back hits were the only ones that May gave up on the night.
Steve Trout then came out for the top of the eighth with a no-hitter and 1 run lead. Trout walks the first batter of the inning, Eric Soderholm. The second hitter of the inning then singled to center to end the no-hitter. The Yankee that broke up the no-no, (drum roll)……. Lou Piniella.
The Yankees got two more hits that inning including a Rick Cerone homer and went on to beat the Sox 3-1.

One of the two of them works construction and had to start work at 4am.
I had to start at 5am, but I wasn't leaving.
