Another Hump Day Chat Has Begun

Post by Tom Kessenich » Wed Mar 02, 2005 6:59 am

It's Wednesday; the work week is nearing the home stretch and the NFBC continues to move along at a sizzling pace. We're getting closer and closer to our 300-team limit and if I had to guess I'd predict we'll reach it some point next week. So that means all you lurkers out there sitting on the fence need to snap to it if you want to join us in Vegas, Chicago or New York. The clock is ticking.

So now with that having been said, let's kick off another daily chat. Bring whatever to the table that has your interest today and we'll have some fun.

ATL LF is butt ugly. Who do you see comging away with the most ab's? Anybody in the pipeline like a C.Thomas that will show up this year ?

It looks like the Braves are going to give Jordan a real shot to man that position. But everyone ought to know he won't stay healthy. Ryan Langerhans could get a shot to steal some ABs, but the guy to watch there is probably Jeff Francouer. It's only a matter of time before he gets a chance to start and he has all the skills to be a big-time player.

geez Tom, forget deodorant this morning ? Heck I dont smell anything. Does J.Lane really have the talent people have been writing about all these years or are there holes in his game that will be exposed this season ?

I'm not a big Lane fan. The Astros have no choice but to run him out there and hope he can show more than he did last season. But I'm not optimistic. At best he's a late-round flyer but my expectations for him are very low.

Too many ifs in the Mets' lineup. I don't see them as a real threat to win the division. I haven't heard any trade rumblings involving the Mets and a closer. I think they're happy with Looper for now.

Hi Tom, how goes it?

Last year there was big hype surrounding Edwin Jackson. Of course, he got hurt and the season was a wash.

Although he is still a kid, do you see him doing anything in the bigs this year?

Tell Greg for a fourth city next year Disney World would help us poor souls with wives, kids, and grandkids to try and sell the cost of the NFBC. I know he's talking Tampa but the Disney transportation system and family offerings would appeal to a lot of us family guys trying to kill two birds with one stone.

I know a lot of people don't want family along and there's still Vegas for them but those of us with limited vacation time would love Disney.

It goes good Aaron.

Or is that well?

As far as Jackson goes, I think he still has tremendous potential and the Dodgers haven't given up on him. I think he'd be best served by starting the year at Triple-A, rebuilding his confidence and then seeing if he can be a strong second-half pitcher.

Interesting thoughts Ken. I know one of the reasons we're looking into Tampa is the ability to connect our event and spring training. If we were able to provide our participants with a chance to not only come and draft in our event but also check out a game or two I think that would be a great bonus to our event.

We'll see.

I'm a happy guy Gordon. If you came to Chicago you'd find that out.

Is that 7 and 5?

Or 6 now?

Has anyone suggested New Orleans as a 4th city? What you need is a place for people to go that has something to do besides draft. LV is the prime place. NYC can be worth the trip if only to go to the ESPNZone at Times Square. Chicago features cold and wind - enough said. New Orleans is in the south and has lots to do. Orlando is a family place but will anyone really take their family?

We don't want to move out of Chicago. It's a great Midwestern location and it's a great baseball town. We believe we can continue to grow the event in Chicago (and the fact remains we have more participants this year in Chicago than a year ago so that is a good sign).

As far as New Orleans, we've had discussions about growing our football event and I was the first one to suggest New Orleans. For a number of reasons. :D

I know a lot of people don't want family along and there's still Vegas for them but those of us with limited vacation time would love Disney. I had a great talk with the Swan Hotel you suggested earlier, but I don't think we were big enough for the events they like to host there. I didn't get much farther in Orlando with other sales reps there, but Tampa people are all over this. They love the idea and I have some very strong proposals from hotels to host this at. I'm not saying we are definitely going to expand there, but the fact that the Yankees, Phillies, Blue Jays, Tigers and others train in that area is kind of appealing. It's also possible that we could work with MLB in 2006 to secure some spring training tickets and make it more than just a draft weekend in Florida. I have some ideas and I'm running them around in my head first.

As for New Orleans, you're talking to two guys that just absolutely love that city. Tom and I agree that we could make a go of it in New Orleans, but possibly moreso in football than baseball. We'll consider everything, but in 2006 we will expand by one city at the most and that will likely be in Florida.

Nobody should diss Chicago just yet. If we get 60 signups for baseball there this year after having 60 there in September for football, we're onto a good third location. We almost doubled our number of baseball participants there in one year (from 33 to hopefully 60) and I feel good about the Windy City. We definitely aren't moving out of Chicago anytime soon.
