Bobby Thomson lived the dream. Every one of us has been at bat in a World Series in the 9th inning, being the winning run. For us, it was a dream or part of a fantasy. Thomson lived the dream.

Thomson is one of few people alive that had an event happen in their lives, and be asked about that event for the rest of their lives by complete strangers. Neil Armstrong comes to mind, not many others.

Bill Mazeroski holding his hat, trying to make his way around the bases and Joe Carter skipping around the bases come to mind for dramatic home runs. Neither equal Thomson's. Thomson's was hit when rivals REALLY WERE rivals. Rivals that were so close in geography, that you can read a paper about them as well as yourselves.

It was a time when television was getting a start, so that more than just folks at the ballpark can see the game. A time when radio was at its peak. A time when the two superstars of baseball, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams were showing age. A time when Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were still trying to impress.

Bobby Thomson was a man in the right place at the right time. An everyday player who will be remembered with superstars.

A baseball player lottery winner.

The class he showed toward Ralph Branca and to Dodger fans after his 'shot heard round the world'will always be remembered. He enjoyed talking of the at bat, always constructively, never derisively.

Thanks for the memory, Bobby. You relived it for baseball fans for 60 years. We will make sure it is never forgotten.

Rest Well.
