The great Bob Feller dies.......

Post by Crazy Like a Fox » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:33 am

I remember meeting him at a baseball card show 28 years ago. I was 7 years old. I had no idea who he was. Signatures were $5.00 for signed photos and only $3 for a signature on a ball (if you brought your own). I also remember distinctly there was a very nice conditioned Mickey Mantle rookie selling for $5,000, and at 7 years old, I thought to myself, what a great deal (no joke).....lol. Mr. Feller was very nice and full of stories, I got a signed picture and ball and the prices seemed very reasonable.

My parents basically left my brother and I there at the show to come pick us up later that night. We were the last 2 people left at the show, just waiting for our parents to arrive sitting on the bench out front. Bob came up to us and asked, "do you kids need a ride home?". We of course declined and said, "no thanks, our parents are coming soon." Then we watch Mr. Feller drive off in a Delorean. Seems like a nothing story but, I still remember meeting him 28 years later and thinking what a great guy he was. He will be missed.

Things were different 30 years ago. I can’t imagine leaving my kids alone at a show to pick them up later, and if someone offered to drive them somewhere their motives would be questioned.

I would love to hear the other side of this story. Maybe if Bob is reading this he can tell us about it.

It was announced today that Feller is battling leukemia, he hasn’t died.

Yeah, it was kind of late at night too. Maybe 9:00 p.m. (just a guess). I didn't really question his intentions but looking back, it might sound bad but I believe he only had the best intentions.
