Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
I don't want to give away too much information from our early Slow Drafts, but I do want to start generating some interest in baseball and thus early results are the best way to do that. Let's whet your appetites a little bit with a few Slow Draft early round results. Here's what we have:
Currently we have five NFBC pay Slow Drafts going on, ranging from $150 per team to $375 per team. These all started in mid-December after the Winter Meetings and all are past Round 11 after a week of drafting. Here are the first six rounds from one of the leagues randomly picked and I'll add the others shortly. I think even for those owners who are competing now it will be fun to see where players went in other leagues that were conducted at the same time. I won't go any deeper than six rounds because the people who paid for these leagues deserve to keep later round information confidential.
But here you go. Enjoy:
Round 1:
1. Albert Pujols

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
Greg,
Thanks for this appetite whetting. It looks to me that things start to get a bit wonky in the latter half of the 4th rd. I think I took Alexei in the 8th rd of the Main last year, and though maybe his final numbers justified (barely) such a pick, I see nothing in his numbers, either peripheral or otherwise, that would justify bumping him up four rounds.
The picks from ther eon out seem like the gambling starts early this year.
Happy holidays to everyone.

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
Risky picks by round:
1st rd
Adrian Gonzalez.
Was there a reason (his back) the Padres sold now rather than in July?
2nd rd
Ian Kinsler
A full season of playing time would be nice.
3rd rd
Buster Posey
Catcher with half a good season under his belt.
4th rd
Jose Bautista
Career year is over, back to normal.
5th rd
Delmon Young
Decent BA, mediocre power, minimal steals and inconsistent ... in the 5th round?
6th rd
Pedro Alvarez
Hard to produce in PIT, probably a year too soon at this price.

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
Greg:
Thanks for posting these three slow drafts.
Gonzo's draft positions were 14, 11 and 18, respectively. Assuming his stock has been going up, I further assumed the probable order of the drafts posted were second, third and first (I may be completely wrong, but humor me).
Considering the first draft and the third draft, I observed the following notable movement in the top 35 group:
Votto - 10 to 7
Crawford - 4 to 8 (a little odd?)
Gonzo - 18 to 11
Cano - 9 to 13
Cruz - 24 to 18
Zimmeman - 30 to 20 (Werth factor?)
Reyes - 16 to 21
Youk - 37 to 23 (Gonzo/Crawford factor?)
Mauer - 17 to 24
McCutch - 32 to 27
Kinsler - 38 to 30
Rollins - 39 to 31
Rios - 41 to 33
VMart - 22 to 34
Phillips - 49 to 35
It's way to early to draw any conclusions. Just having a little fun waiting for the baseball drafts to start.
Happy Holidays All!

I'm not going to give away any of the draft dates or any other info, but honestly these first five drafts all started close to each other, so no off-season news really happened between one draft or another. This just shows how different people's opinions are of these top guys and even the first round has swings one way or another. If anything, these results show how much fun this season is going to be and depending on who is in your league the players you want could drop to you or they could go a lot earlier than you expected. It's going to be a crazy good year.

You think I'm employing the 'ol gekko mis-direction?

Just me, but I don't think the Gonzalez injury had anything to do with the timing of the trade.
And, I'm sure when the physical was taken that the Sox checked out the back well.
The Red Sox and Padres have been working on this trade a long time. San Diego doesn't get more at the deadline when teams KNOW he has to be moved.

And it gets Casey Kelly and the others into their system for the spring, which is rather important and could hasten their development, or at least hasten the transition getting each side to know each other better, even considering Hoyer's familiarity with the Boston system.

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results

Hard to produce in PIT, probably a year too soon at this price. Kevin,
You should draft Alvarez AND Reynolds, of course after starting a pre-draft campaign to have strike-outs a batting as well as pitching category!
Alvarez struck out 68 times in 242 AAA at-bats and 119 times in 347 MLB at-bats. He is an intriguing pick, but I see a major BA drain (and if you did not need another reason to avoid who ever hits high in the Pirate line-up, those K's are gonna leave a lot of ducks on the pond) here and the sixth round is placing too much premium on promise.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
Yeah - I have a thought. I thought I would bump this back up to the Top of the boards so we can talk some baseball along with all the less exciting and worrisome news.
Time to start talking about this again.
I think you can add Z Greinke's name to the list of players who are moving up draft boards. He just went 4th rd, Pick 52 in a 15 team league using NFBC rules I am drafting in. He was the 10th SP off the board and I think it is safe to say that more than one owner will come to the draft table with Zach rounding out their Top 10.

Does anyone worry about Z Greinke mental stability? If he is going in the 4th round, I'll be cooking up something different. I would consider him in the first part of the 6th.

4th round is a bit early for Greinke for me, but I don't see him having comfort issues in MIL. If he's prone to bratwurst & beer related issues, then maybe.
If you're going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you're going to be locked up.--Hunter S. Thompson

Some NFBC Slow Draft Early Results
This whole thread has been very interesting. Never do I recall the first round being in such flux. Just about anybody (save six or seven guys) could be available all the way through the first two-thirds of the second round.
Picks in the first round that would make me sweat (not the good kind):
Carlos Gonzalez - break-out year and world class talent, but is only 25. Not a prototypical power type, though could grow into it. Not the best at taking a pitch or guessing right, but hits a lot of line drives. A year falling back to the pack would not hurt his long term prospects a bit and could easily do just that. A year early to me to be top five. See below.
Ryan Braun - two solid years of declining FB rates and increased GB rates. Only 27 so not the direction you expect a hitter to take as he matures. Still putting up numbers and that is what it is all about, but what is hurt?
Robinson Cano - What a year he had! But no speed and add that to solid contact rate with GB tendencies and you could just as easily see 2008 rather than 2010. Would that be good enough for his premium?
Troy Tulowitzki - What a year he had in one month! Not exactly a LD hitter (In September had a whopping 8% LD rate) nor a great FB hitter (four of the six months FB rate below 40%) nor that healthy for a 26 year old.
While these are not exactly gamble picks, I think there is too much splash and not enough fish. Give me Pujols (duh!), Cabrera, Votto (sure, he will not steal so much next year), Crawford, or Longoria (a 25 year old whose skills are trending the RIGHT way).
