2011 NFBC Update: Moving Forward

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:25 am

First of all, I'd like to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all of you who have been patiently waiting through this roller coaster ride. I know it's been a crazy time from the end of the season through our early signup period and then through the announcement on Jan. 4th that Fanball was going to be shut down.

But you continued to stick by us and I think your patience will be rewarded with an eighth NFBC season. Legally we're still waiting to finalize this, but everything is in place for new ownership of the high-stakes events/contests to be complete soon. I don't want to say much more than that, but that is the plan with Tom and myself working with a key industry partner to move this forward.

It's important to note that all of the events currently on the NFBC Registration page are moving forward in all of the various cities. Yes, we are doing drafts on both weekends. Yes, we are doing them in three different cities and online on March 18-20. Yes, we are hosting live drafts in Las Vegas, New York and Chicago on March 25-27. The 12-team Online Championship will continue and will have expanded draft dates. The prizes will all be guaranteed by our new company and backed not just by two guys but by a large industry company that will secure the prize funds.

The technology is key and this has been finalized as well. This came together as I had hoped and we'll announce this after we have a done deal for the NFBC. But it's important for everyone to know that this is a time-and-trusted software that is built for our game by a veteran industry company. There will be reasons for this software to be the best in the industry and exactly what you folks want. And technological advances to smartphones, iPads, even on Draft Day will eventually be part of the plan. We want to stay on the cutting edge with all of this if demand and expenses can be balanced. And I think we can figure out the Internet Explorer problem, too. ;)

We already have 150 teams signed up for the Main Event, including 55 on the first weekend. I know many others are holding out until they know exactly what the plans are and I totally understand that. But get your travel plans in place because you will like what you'll see. We already have solid counts for the Ultimate, Super and Diamond Leagues, and we have 16 full Slow Drafts already when I created a national championship budget of 20. All of the events are on pace to reach our goals, so join us if you can.

I'm going to start new city by city threads today and start giving updates on each particular city shortly. I want to give everyone the latest updates on each event in each city and make sure we are all on the same page with starting times, host hotel rates, demand for each event, etc. Every city is a go and demand looks solid for each city right now with more signups to come.

I'm sorry that we can't explain everything fully right now, but as you can see we are all moving forward with our plans and it's time to get serious about Draft Day. Everything is currently in place for a seamless transition to new ownership, full payments of past NFBC (for any money left in accounts) and NFFC events shortly, and a solid, solid back-end provider/partner. Plan accordingly if you trust this plan and get ready for a historic and fun 2011 NFBC season.

I think I could cry with joy right now!!! We are almost there, folks, almost there. Today was a GREAT day. The NFBC not only will live to see another season, everything is now in place to make the NFBC the ideal setup going forward. You'll learn why I say that soon enough, but it's been one of the most unbelievable weeks of my life.

Packers in the Super Bowl. check

Partner secured. check

Hall of Fame plaque and a kick ass speech. Check ;)

Now this. CHECKMATE!!!

Get your popcorn ready, as T.O. said. ;) Game day is comin' and it's going to be good.

Glenn There's one more thing I'd like to add to this.

It's said that you see the true nature of a man in the face of adversity. In what I'm sure was a very trying time for both you and Tom, you handled yourselves with nothing but optimism, grace, and mostly class.

You should be proud. I'm proud to be part of your contests.

I agree with all of the above comments, except that the suspense about "who and how" is killing me. Well done gentlemen (and I really mean that in the best sense of the word). Someday, someone should write a business school case about this--much to be learned about the value of "intangibles", relationships, and earned reputations. Congrats again.

If anyone writes a business school case, they need to start by explaining what morons the guys at LM are for announcing a shut down of this, and then selling it a few weeks later.

If something has value and can be sold, you try to find a buyer, you don't announce a shut down.

This could have all happened quietly, with the NFBC not skipping a beat.

There's now info that the rest of Fanball games may also be sold. It would have been worth more if they'd never announced the shut down. But now people are fleeing, new games are starting up, it's a mess.

Having said all that, congrats Greg and Tom...I'm making my NY reservations...and GO PACK!

Congrats Greg on the great and memorable week. I'm very happy the NFBC will be ready to roll soon and hopefully for years to come. Go Pack go!

I know you guys can't comment yet, but I'm really hoping that the NFBC will be hooking up with a former partner.

Point well taken in regard to LM. However, it was pretty clear they wanted to distance themselves from something in a rather quick manner.

Had LM decided to play hardball with NFBC/NFFC

we wouldn't be talking about a 2011 season, period. We should be thankful that LM didn't go with the corporate bottom line and were smart enough to leave (or sell) the rights to the people we trust the most. Sounds to me like we are going to be OK. For that, let us be thankful.

Greg,

Do you anticipate an on-line option being available for the main event? Flight prices are a disincentive to travel at the moment. Thanks!

Sack -- sounds like NFBC/NFFC will be fine, and maybe better than ever...but the rest of the CDM/Fanball games are in great question, which is a shame.

Much as I love the NFBC, as well as other leagues I'm in, the CDM/Fanball Diamond Challenge is the BEST game ever. It's the truest test of ability, because it minimizes luck more than auction and draft formats.

Larry: Don't lose hope yet in some of those other games. They worked well in the past and I'm guessing that some smart minds may be hard at work to save some of those solid games as well. Call me selfish, but despite starting this hobby with the CDM/DC, the NFBC format has become far and away my favorite.

Many of my friends are hardcore CDM/DC fans and I'll be rooting hard that when there is a will, there will be a way. Don't give up yet and I'd hold off on jumping into anything resembling our old game until you see how everything plays out.

SACK -- Yes, I am well aware of what's happening with Charlie W, and other possible "clone" games. I am hoping the CDM/Fanball DC will continue. Unfortunately, even if it does continue, it appears that some, or many, of it's customer base will be siphoned off to new ventures that are trying to start up for 2011.

The number of DC entrants has declined over the years, due to all the growing competition, and this could be a real blow, even if it continues. Had LM just quietly decided to sell it, this wouldn't have happened.

2 baseball overall titles, plus a baseball "playoff" title way back when the Marlins won the World Series.

I forgot, the Marlins won 2X. I was referring to way back in 1997, their first win.
