Sometimes the system baseball has really works...
Derek Jeter originally, set out to make the same kind of money that George Steinbrenner had paid him while in the prime of his career. It took a counter offer from the younger Steinbrenner and some self realization about being in the twilight of his career, before accepting numbers that were very close to the Yankees counter proposal.
On the other hand, the Cardinals know what it'll take to sign Albert Pujols and this time it is the player who holds all the Cards, sorta speak.
Pujols will get money north of ARod's whether it is from the Cards in the next month or so, or from the rich teams at the deadline or next off season, Pujols will be paid like the top player in baseball should be paid.
One player that may be falling in drafts during the off season is Grady Sizemore. It seems like all the blurbs from the Indians are attempts of putting a positive spin on a slow process. It looks like Sizemore, for sure, won't be ready for the start of the season and bets are that it'll be weeks after that. With the initial 'feeling out' process, it could be till the All Star break that folks see the real Grady Sizemore. And, we'll even be crossing our fingers for that.
If the Rangers are serious about trading Michael Young, it'll most likely drop him in ADP. Young has always hit well in Arlington. Last year hitting .307 at home and only .260 on the road. Young's power from a third base position is mostly home park generated. Even with Arlington's help, Young has only managed 78 home runs over the last five years. A trade leaves him susceptible to less playing time and maybe a platoon. Not good for Young owners.
ESPN tried to make a case for Andy Pettitte to get Hall of Fame recognition. Pettitte has been a durable, consistent pitcher over the years. Most of Pettitte's accomplishments came with team driven opportunities.
His numbers fall short, even against those that haven't made the Hall. And, there is still that nasty, little HGH thing hanging over his head.
I'm old school, I'm the first to admit it...but was I the only non-partisan fan screaming at the tv at the end of the game?
I know it's a scintilla of a chance, but the Steelers still had a time out to call to make the Packers snap the ball one more time. Odds are they just prolong the game for another half minute while the Pack snaps the ball without incident, BUT c'mon, it's the Super Bowl!
And now, with the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror and the first Main only six weeks away, full asttention on baseball. Woo Hoo!
I'm jealous of you folks drafting in St. Louis. For those drafting there for the first time, make time for the dinner afterwards while talking with other drafters, it is a kick in the pants.
I'll be at the fancy Bellagio. Some have said drafting there is a once in a lifetime experience...but so is death, so I'll tread carefully.
