An erratic Ben Sheets gave up three runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Rangers tonight.

Gosh, you guys must really know baseball since you know what good a predictor spring is for in-season performance. You can really see, for instance, that Sheets was going to be spectacular in 2004 by what a good spring he had last year. Just look at the numbers. Go ahead. Look at them.



Or if that bores you, you can look at how Abraham Nunez had the spring homerun title last year. So, now you know those 65 dingers he hit in-season didn't come out of nowhere.

Yes, Nunez did hit 10 home runs last spring and ended up in the Marlins' minor leagues to start the year. But here's the funny thing about Nunez--don't you think that power display had SOMETHING to do with Kansas City not only trading for him, but handing him a starting job? I would say so.



Sure, Abraham Nunez sucked, but sometimes spring numbers can play more of a factor than you think.

It's not bad to hit 11 in s.t. It's just bad to assume that kind of data is going to show you what he'll do all year. And it's certainly bad to look too much into one start be it s.t. or otherwise. I didn't notice Gekko posting anything about Sheets' excellent start last week.

Nunez) -- just didn't realize he was languishing on the Marlins' bench from April through July. The guy had 64 at-bats during a four month stretch on the big league roster, and 212 ABs in August and September after the trade to KC.

Well, sure, I buy that, but I'm thinking from the organization's standpoint rather than the player's. It was great for Nunez himself, but was it great for the Royals to invest in him? So far the results say no. And his career minor league numbers only support what he did do in the real season last year. If you're not thinking from the player's standpoint, I'm not sure what your point is. If you are saying that the Royals invested in him and they automatically know better than us because they are a major league team, I don't know how to respond to that. To put it another way, I doubt I could do much worse than their GM, and I'd give you the same benefit of the doubt. What I'm trying to do here is evaluate future performance and you can factor that one month into it, but along with everything else, it doesn't bode well for him.
