A friend of mine told me about this (thank god!) while in LV before the main drafts. I guess I had missed the warning signs this spring.



From rotoworld: Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild is concerned with Phil Hughes' drop in velocity.



Drop in velocity. uh o. sounds like vazquez from last year!!!!

Uh O is right! I decided against keeping him in one of my keeper leagues for only 4 bucks and some friends thought I was nuts. I did take him in a slow draft this year to dip my toe in the water, but I think the gut feeling I had on him going into 2011 is right.... Risky to me, but time will tell...

Well - it's all over the papers today in NY, which never met a sports story they didn't want to inflate - but I don't think you can deny that the 80+ innings increase last season could be the culprit here. Seems like he's just a week or two behind in building up his arm strength. As far as I can see - there are no whispers of injury, etc. , just a lack or arm strength. I guess if you are worried you could sit him at home this week against a Minn. team stacked with good LH hitters, but I doubt any experienced players are going to overreact (yet )



Now - those of us (yes - me too) who invested in the real Javy Vazquez, hoping for a 2009-redux, you may have more justification to panic at this point.

He's a fairly extreme FB pitcher with a league-average swinging strike rate in what is possibly the worst Home park for a RH FB pitcher. He's a solid pitcher, but he's not a stud by any means. I think he'll be fine, but he's a matchup guy rather than a plug and play guy,

I think he'll be fine, but he's a matchup guy rather than a plug and play guy, Agree. The declining peripherals from last season are a concern, but even if they bounce back, he will cough up long balls. I had him down for a 7.5 K/9 and my system still charged him with a 4.38 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, albeit with 14 wins over a full season.



Suffice it to say, I'm not an owner.

Not good. He looks fat and out of shape and is pitching like it.



He's lucky the Red Sox keeping running into outs

I could swear I've seen Colon at a few buffets though.

Make fun of them all you want, but whenever players need to know where the best restaurants are, they either go to the fat guys or umpires

Phil Hughes. Damn. The only positive for me is that I sat him this week for one of the two teams I've drafted this bum. Luckily it was the Ultimate.

2.) The DL is semantics. It's a save face measure not to demote him to AAA.

doesnt matter the semantics.. he has a plan.. and he is going to execute it every day of the season...



cant wait to see who is next on the pump and dump list. im sure he isnt a hughes owner.. so time to set up the doom and gloom.. not that it takes much effort with hughes' performance so far this season.

[/QUOTE]A couple years back the Yankees made a similar move with a struggling Chien-Ming Wang. At the time it appeared that Wang was placed on the DL due to an inflamed ERA and swollen WHIP, but he's never been healthy or effective since then. I don't necessarily sense the same thing here with Hughes, but just the same I'm relieved not to have invested a draft pick on him. My team has enough headaches without trying to figure out what's up with Hughes.
