Phat Albert and the Scully

I invested in the MLB package this yr, got tired of having nothing but Dbacks & the Yankee/Red Sox channel aka ESPN to watch. So I'm getting my first exposure to the living legend that is Vin Scully.

Harry Kalas will always be my main man, but I can see why so many revere Scully. He has a calm voice, very likable...almost could make me a Dodger fan. Contrast his style w/ that of say the White Sox announcers, who make me wish they'd lose every game they play (and that's w/ having a few of their pitchers!)

But I digress. The reason I created this thread was b/c of some STUFF Mr. Scully was talkin' about EL HOMBRE.

At this point in his career Pujols has more HR's than Aaron, more RBI than Musial, more Runs score than Ricky Henderson, and a higher AVE than Tony Gwynn

No wonder 99% of nfbc'ers set their KDS at 1-15 !

Scully is amazing. I'm sure if you listen to him every day for years, you hear the same anecdotes over and over again, but still. I am astounded by the level of preparation he must put in to each broadcast - especially at his age, The fact that he does the entire thing himself with no color guy is even more incredible.

I'm sorry. He's terrible. He is the only play by play man that I have to turn down. He NEVER SHUTS UP!! I can't enjoy the game. I can't concentrate on the game. I can't even hear myself think. I really don't know how they can stand him in LA.

i agree with team z...i would rather listen to paint dry...he is terrible in my opinion.....snore....boring!!!

I agree with team z. I am sure there's an element of the "good old days" in listening to him, and I am sure he prepares like nobody else(that's clear in his in-depth observations), but I agree he never stops talking! I was watching the Dodgers the other night, there was never more than 5-7 seconds of silence. I kept exepecting a "did you know that on days that end in a y between 3:35 pm and 4:07 pm Matt Kemp hits .227 on curveballs on the outer 14% of the plate between his thighs and belt?"

From Wiki: Scully was then recruited by Red Barber, sports director of the CBS Radio Network, for its college football coverage. Scully impressed his boss with his coverage of a football game from frigid Fenway Park in Boston, despite having to do so from the stadium roof. Expecting an enclosed press box, Scully had left his coat and gloves at his hotel, but never mentioned his discomfort on the air. Barber mentored Scully and told him that if he wanted to be a successful sports announcer he should never be a "homer" (openly showing a rooting interest for the team that employs you), never listen to other announcers, and keep his opinions to himself.

I've noticed that right off the bat w/ Vin. He is no "homer" and I appreciate that. He may say Matt Kemp can run like the wind, but he'd say the same thing about Carlos Gonzalez. I'm also glad there's no color guy. Sometimes you just need to let the game be played and I believe Mr. Scully has perfected the art of when/when not to talk.

With a gulp in my throat I write I agree with Rocket sauce and Hells Satans.

I love Scully. I love how it seems like a conversation just between you and him. I also find it fascinating how everyone describes him as kind and very nice but no one even after all of these years knows him at all around Dodger stadium.

One thing I do believe is he is slipping. Notice that he told the same personal stories about players over and over. Old age will do that to you.

It's funny that Chest brings up Vin repeating himself. He actually gave the very same #'s (which I originally mentioned) about Albert in the 1st game of series b/w Dodgers-Cardinals. My 40 y.o. self couldn't remember the name of the guy he said Albert had more runs scored than at comparable times in their careers. So I bagged the idea of starting this thread and then.....he told us all about it again last night. I don't care it's still good STUFF

Shoot I know I repeat myself now, so I fear for my family/friends if I'm lucky enough to make it to Mr. Scully's age. Cut the guy some slack, he ain't no Rizzuto!

Two things really surprised me with this thread:

1. I didn't realize that there were that many Scully haters out there, albeit a small sample size. I really enjoy his games (not as much as Harry K though). What's wrong with you Rt?

2. Chest and the Rockit agree on something, maybe peace in the mideast is possible!

With the many announcers and color guys that I hate so much that I mute the broadcast, including Chris Wheeler and the famous Tim McCarver whom Chris personally mentored originally, Vin Scully is so vastly above their level that i'd never even compare them and won't now. Regarding Vin himself, he ADDS value to the broadcast, through making you care about the players, feel relaxed and comfortable, fills the gap in action with truly interesting stories, and he made some of my favorite moments in baseball history, including the Gibson call, 100 times more poinant and memorable.

There are others out there that do this too, in their own style, but these other brutal know-it-alls that need to tell the listener what the player should have done, or what they were thinking, or what the manager should have done, or on the other hand always defend the home team, all these dum-dums pale in comparison.
