What is about the CHISOX and awesome defensive plays? Last yr on Opening Day, Buerhle made that amazing play that I believe turned out to be the Web Gem of the Year.
Tonight Paulie fielded a 1 hopper off the bat of Tori Hunter. He didn't have time to get back to the bag so he behind the back ala Bob Cousy tossed the ball to Thornton (who was racing toward 1B), who barehanded it and landed on the bag a step ahead of Hunter.
This play will undoubtedly make it to the highlight reels, but b/c it was a late West Coast game I wanted to give my East Coast homies a heads-up.
Speaking of West Coast defensive gems...Jack Wilson made a play a few wks ago that I still can't believe. Rather than try to make another crappy attempt to describe that play, google it. I agree w/ Mitch? (one of those MLB network guys) that it was the greatest defensive play I'd ever seen. OF's make highlight catches all the time, but this play by Wilson required a great glove, feet like a ballerina, and a strong arm.
By the way, Thornton was in there b/c Santos had pitched the 2 previous inn's. At least he didn't blow it and got a W for all Santos owners.
