The other day a person told me that he doesn't play in the NFBC, but checks out the Boards to see what I write. A great ego-booster for sure.

But, it got me to thinking that with spam being so prevalent, that maybe these Boards are growing a bit. Afterall, why would spammers waste their time with a smaller audience?

I think of the NFBC as the premier place to play high stakes fantasy baseball. Most of the players here, are dyed in the wool fantasy players. Other venues are sneaking a peak to see what we're talking about. Maybe even the writers from other sites.

Scribes, writers, and 'experts' have high profile leagues to play in, but one doesn't represent a 'National Championship'.

LABR and other high profile leagues are championed before and during the draft, but are all but forgotten except by the participants soon after the season begins..

On their web page and publications, these writers will boast about winning this league or that.

Totally meaningless to us, we don't know what kind of league they were in AND if you're in 50 leagues, they're bound to win a few, right?

So, here's what I'm thinking.

A National Championship for scribes. NFBC rules. Leagues of 15 with an overall winner. Online Drafts, so that participants can't use 'busy' or 'can't make it there' as an excuse.

Each scribe is NOT entered by their employer, it is their own money.

It would be ok if Matthew Berry was in a league with Eric Karabell or Ron Shandler is in a league with Ray Murphy, they'll be representing themselves until a victor is declared and that victor can plaster that achievment over his/her site and publication.

I am guessing that this would offer more cred for these writers than saying 'Written by REAL experts in fantasy play' or 'I won our in-house league'.

I probably should have given you a call first, Greg, so that you can tell me the would-be complications of this, but to tell the truth, I've deleted three would-be posts today as being too boring and I wasn't going to do it again.

Maybe Todd and Ray could weigh in on this. I know it would pique interest for folks here and it would probably be a nice bit of advertising for the NFBC to have writers claiming a National Championship at the NFBC.

The NWFBC- The National Writers of Fantasy Baseball Championship.

I don't know, it sounds like a fun idea to me.

Thoughts?

absolutely is a fun idea Dan...dunno the business reasons why it wouldn't be allowed (for ex. ESPN won't let Berry & Karabell, etc) but if you could assemble such a league as you described I'd be the just the type of nerd who'd check in to see who was winning that lge almost as much as my own ;)

to borrow from Daryl down in the warehouse, "Make it happen' Cap'n!" :D

Wait a minute rockitsauce.....How did I get dragged into this?

Well I got here through a strange route - I was reading Todd's current NFBC column at Mastersball.com where he interviewed himself and one of the questions was about an "NFBC Writer's League" - basically an experts league at the NFBC. Rather than give you a ton of reasons why this wouldn't fly, I wanted to say that if Greg is interested in promoting the NFBC by making the league happen I think it would have value - the writers and analysts (I abhor the term experts) competing against themselves but at the same time against all the NFBC diehards - so it could be just one league within the Main Event.

Many of the writers do play in the events - Todd Zola, Ray Murphy, Gene McCaffrey, Brian Walton, Fred Zinkie and no doubt I am leaving some out doing this without my second cup of coffee. And several more - Ron Shandler, Lawr Michaels etc have done the NFBC once. But I think this league would have more potential - it would ensure more ink about the great NFBC format thus recruiting more players for future years. Let's face it - there are thousands, more like hundreds of thousands of fantasy baseball players who have never heard of the NFBC. And don't kid yourself GG many of them are already better players than you were when you started playing in these events (although yes you and the other excellent players here have valuable experience in this format over them. Still wouldn't we all want the contest to grow - more players equals higher payouts and more recognition.

From all those writer dudes

Perry, You think we'll ever go toe to toe in a league again? Hope so. What a blast!
